Running Outlook from a portable external HD
by cbaldia - 4/8/07 2:43 PMHas anyone here ever tried to install Microsoft Outlook onto a portable external hard drive (like a Western Digital Passport drive or the Mini Edition of the Maxtor OneTouch III) and use it to check e-mail from different computers (including public-use computers)? I know it's possible to do, but I'm wondering if there are any problems or complications with doing this in actual practice.
Sorry, not something MS allows.

Your best bet is an Outlook to Gmail or something sync tool (I think they exist), next best is probably GotoMyPC, VNC or other remote-control tool.
Or if like me you're very serious about emails you can roll out an Exchange Server with an SSL VPN Gateway which gives you webmail, mobile mail and secure remote syncing. The Small Business Server edition of Windows Server 2003 is relatively inexpensive (~$500 for OEM) and packs much of the power of the full versions of the software.
