Wii overheating problems!

by Loktoar - 4/6/07 3:17 PM

Confirmed. The wii has overheating problems. There have been reported and unreported cases of this. Im not trying to bash the wii/nintendo or anything, but I am very angry at Nintendo for not recognizing and addressing this problem and finding ways to solve it (like Microsoft and the new 65nm processor that has a significantly less heat output than the current 90nm Xbox processor.) and instead sweeps this information under the rug and decides to ignore it and continues to tell people that their console is perfect and the best thing since sliced bread.

That is why I'm advising all wii owners to take matters into their own hands and buy 3rd party cooling devices. There are two that come to mind. The first is a rear exhaust port fan that attaches to the rear USB ports (link: http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802575) and the second is a stand with a built in intake fan (link: http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802630). These overheating problems are usually caused by the Wii connect24 service (this overheating occurs in sleep mode), and by playing the virtual console. Take my advise. Buy these fans. I have and xbox 360, so I know from first hand experience that 3rd party coolers are indispensable accessories in todays gaming world no matter which console you get.

I don't know it this hasn't ever come to your mind or if your just trying to get people to buy stuff. But the easiest solution the this problem is not spending money. Its unplugging the Wii when your not playing it! Not that complicated.

You sound like just the sort of sucker Nyko is looking for

I'm not a computer expert but I do know that attaching fans to the back of any computer only makes ventilation worse. Let's not forget the horror stories of the Nyko Intercooler that almost cause fires and burnt many power sockets on 360's. It's funny how people don't learn from history. No I take that back, it's scary how people don't learn from history.

You're right, you're not an expert. I had a home server that I left running while on vacation. The PSU line that ran my fans died & so my server overheated & killed my MOBO & CPU. Fans help ventilation, they don't hinder it.

Not quite

Not quite. There's an art and a science to proper fan placement. The idea is to keep a steady stream of air flowing all the way through the enclosure, so that the heated air is constantly being replaced with cooler air. Thus you can leech off the heat from the components.

If you put a fan smack in the middle of all this, it's going to start sucking out the air before it ever gets to the "rear" side of the case. Or the amount of air getting to the other side of the case will be significantly reduced. This is NOT an ideal situation.

You also need to balance the fans. You can't have two high volume (as in air moved) exhaust fans and one cheap intake fan. The intake fan will burn out under the stress the other two put on it. And if you reverse the setup, then you have a bunch of air building up in the case with nowhere to go, destroying circulation.

Before you go calling someone else an idiot, you might want to learn a little about the conservation of momentum, and then spend some time in quiet (and might I suggest humble) contemplation of how that applies to air flow. You could also take some classes on fluid dynamics if you have some masochist tendencies.
