Samsung blackjack v. blackberry pearl

by ClassyBlackWoman - 4/1/07 12:51 PM

My Cingular contract is expiring and I'm undecided on the two phones. Does anyone own any one of these and, if so, can you give me the pros and cons of them?

I've read numerous reviews, but I still can't make up my mind.

I want to do the same thing

This won't help you because I'm in the same dilemma. I have two friends how each own one of those two. They both swear by the one they own. It has to come down to holding the phone at a cellular store to see which one has the better feel and the keyboard is the better, etc. Because as far as functionality goes, they are both smart phones with lots of features. I get dizzy reading the features. So what concerns you most - for me it is the size of the keyboard because I do not have small fingers - is what you need to look into. I asked my friend with the Blackjack if the keys were squeezed too close together (I have read that in several reviews). He said he was surprised at how uncramped the keyboard was! I am now leaning towards the BJ because, well, it is a cooler phone, right?

You need to try both

ekw's right. i think you need to try both out. theyre both cool looking but when i read the reviews the 8800 gets better ratings even though i'm not sure about that trackball. some reviewers say the 8800 is the best blackberry ever so that must mean something cuz blackberry has been doing these types of phones for awhile.

reviews I read-

Thanks, you guys. I did get a chance to play with the Blackberry Pearl and I did like the look and the feel of it. And as for the 8800, I read the review on it, but I'm disappointed that it doesn't have a camera with the phone. But I think that's something I could live without, considering I don't use my camera on my current phone now:-)

Samsung blackjack v. blackberry pearl

I'd personally go with the blackjack. The blackberry is too basic in my opinion. I found the blackjack much more appealing because of increased multimedia capabilities. Also, that whole half qwerty that blackberry pearl has going on there isn't so great in my eyes. I do not believe the pearl is 3g compatible either. On the other hand, the blackjack does have a bit of a battery "problem". Although this can be avoided in several ways such as using the bigger extended battery or just turning off 3g when you don't need it (that's what I do and its fine). If it were up to me, I'd definitely go with the blackjack over the blackberry pearl. They do not really compare.

Good point

One thing that does turn me off about the pearl is the keyboard. When I was playing with it, it took me a while to get used to it. That's the only thing keeping me from fully wanting it.

Blackjack vs Pearl

by myth90045 - 4/3/07 9:00 AM In reply to: Good point by ClassyBlackWoman

It depends on what features you are looking for. I know from the stand point of an ex-pearl user, you can play music and play videos on your phone. I believe that the blackjack can do the same. If it is just the keyboard that you are weary on, I say, try it out for a few days, if you dont like it, return the pearl and get the blackjack. It took me a few days to get used to the 7100 keyboard which is the exact same style as the pearl. but once you get used to it, its a breeze to text message and write "short emails"
I saw that you also looked at the 8800. that is a good phone too. very well built. it does everything the pearl does minus the camera. the keyboard is something to get used to also, but im just that is the case with all qwerty keyboards.
So in my long winded comment, I say try the pearl, if you dont like the keyboard, return it and use the credit towards the blackjack.

I bought a Blackjack

by ipagan - 4/3/07 4:56 PM In reply to: Samsung blackjack v. blackberry pearl by ClassyBlackWoman

I considered both but settled on a Blackjack primarily because it will take a Micro SD memory card. I have not had a camera phone yet, so I do not know how much I'll use it, but I did want more memory for my PDA function. I was able to add 2gb of storage to my Blackjack. I'll see how well it works!!

Both accept micro SD cards.

The BlackJack has easier access to the micro SD card slot. The slot on the Pearl is hidden behind the battery.

Bought Blackjack

I had previous experience with Windows Mobile 2002 Motorola MPX200 and this one is even better. All the recent programs, MSGs, IMs, Missed Calls, media are displayed on front screen. The only problem I noticed that it doesn't close programs after running them, so put Task Manager in Recent list and close any programs after you used them - it would do wonders to battery life too. Keyboard is just like regular QWERTY which makes life easier. Overall great phone and time saver.
