IE 7 icons on all files & folders in CDs I created
by Barbara92021 - 3/15/07 1:56 PMWhen I try to read any CD that I have created, for images or data backup, they all have Internet Explorer 7's blue icon, with gold band, on them. The folder first and then inside each folder, every file has that same icon, on the bottom lefthand corner!! And, they are not very small icons!
What is the reason for this? This is happening with CDs I created years ago and long before I had IE7 installed on either my desktop or my laptop! I've read some ideas on other forums about uninstalling and reinstalling the drive (YIKES!) and about messing with the registry ( a bit smaller yikes!)
I trust CNET's forums much more than others, so I look forward to any help I can get with this here.

I'd start with http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q132668/ (rebuilding the icon cache, it might just help).
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=24285 notes a succesful fix for something remarkably like your problem, also modifying the icon cache: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=926715 (but, alas, for one day only)
http://forums.vnunet.com/thread.jspa?messageID=782712 says it seems to be an IE7 problem (but it seems to be rather rare) and notes the same temporary fixes.
If there was a way to rebuild the icon cache from a program or a batchfile you could put that (or better a shortcut to it) in your startup group. In fact, http://www.arcknowledge.com/gmane.comp.version-control.subversion.rapidsvn.devel/2005-09/msg00055.html says he's written a 'small piece of software' to do just that. Worth a try to download it, I think.
As long as it isn't known why it happens with some users (and not with most ones) - it might have to do something with themes used? -I'd go back to IE6 and download Firefox (www.mozilla.org) for the tabbed browsing experience, if the above program doesn't work.
There are a lot of people, in fact, who'd advice to download Firefox even if IE works.
I use both, but have to adjust to clicking a tab to open it in IE, while Firefox with some add-on can be customized to (a) open a link in a new tab and give it focus (IE makes a new tab and expects me to click on it to open it) and (b) to open an existing tab by just hovering the mouse over it without any clicking, which I find VERY pleasant.

Thankyou, Kees! I'm going to uninstall IE7 and use IE6 until all the bugs are cleaned up!! This is such a weird problem as every media (audio, digital pics)CD I try to read, has that IE7 icon on each of the files, yet when I copy them to a folder in My Documents, that icon isn't there. So, it is just showing on each of those files, but isn't affecting the files in any way! Go figure! Would be interesting to find out the WHY of this tho!
I am not going to say this thread is over with b/c I may need all the info you gave me, at a later time. BTW: I love Firefox and have used it as my default browser for many years. Thanks.

I'm back to post the solution to this problem. My CDs no longer have that crazy icon stuck to each file!!! I posted this problem under "HELP PLEASE" b/c I hadn't received an answer to this one. After I posted the new one, you replied to this one. Oh well!
Here is the solution to this problem and it worked super well, super easily, and was very quickly done and I didn't have to uninstall IE7:

What I would try is to download & Install Tweak UI at the link below. After it's installed go to Start>Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI and open it. Under Repair choose "Rebuild Icons" click the Repair Now Button. click Apply/OK. Let us know if it corrects the problem.

I hope you're right and that the solutions sticks. However, the link to the vnunet-forum in my post above (the second post in this discussion) tells that it's only a temporary fix and that the problem comes back after a reboot.
Let me cite it here:
"I tried Microsoft Power toys tweak UI icon repair, it removed the incorrect icons, but on boot up they reappear again. Also tried deleting Iconcache file but it removes the incorrect icons only to reappear on boot up. Also tried resetting colour quality as a suggestion to cure this problem, it again only gives a temporary solution. Anyone know of a permanent solution to this problem please."

Hello again, Kees! You were right! As soon as I performed a reboot, the icons showed up again on those CDs of mine. I had to uninstall IE7 and I won't install it again until I know that all of the bugs are cleaned up! Thankyou for your super help!
Thank god for google, I have this same exact problem...Is there a perm. fix yet?

I've heard that the majority of people don't have this problem with IE7 installed but quite a few of us do. I posted a similar thread in other forums and I am getting the same answers. I am the one my family members and friends call when they have computer questions or problems, and now, I am having them ask what this is!!
The only solution that worked for me was to uninstall IE7 and wait for the patch that apparently Microsoft is coming out with, that will address this issue. So, for now, if you want to stay with IE7, then you will have to put up with this little bug!!

They all have the same 'temporary' fixes, hopefully there will be some sort of update through M$. I can only hope.
Here's the real fix

The problem appears to be using large icons sets the
dpi to a value of 48. Resetting this to 47 seems to
correct this. Why this happens I don't know but here's the
fix.
Warning! Messing with the registry can be fatal to your
computer. This process is not hard just use a little
caution.
Go to Start>Run and type regedit
-There will be 5 HKEY headings on the left side.
-Click on the plus sign next to the one that says:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
-This will open a tree. Scroll down to "Control Panel".
Click on the plus sign next to that.
-Next is "Desktop". Click on the plus sign next to that.
-Last is "Windowmetrics". Click on Windowmetrics
On the right side pane you'll see a lot of values
pop up.
-The two you're looking for are
Shell Icon BPP
Shell Icon Size
-Right click on the first one (Shell Icon BPP) and left click modify.
A window will open. Change Value Data to 47 and click ok.
-Do the same for the second one (Shell Icon Size).
-Close the window and reboot.
Hope this works for you like it did me.

Haven't connected to internet yet:
1 - Started with WinXP SP1 added SP2 and Critical and Security Updates.
2 - Everything fine with "CD view" up until last three installs:
(maybe someone has same or simular)
- IE 7
- Eudora 7.1
- CheckMail 32 v2.22
It doesn't matter which one I install last, of the three. The last program installed causes the "CD view" in explorer to show all IE7 icons. (I reload from fresh previous image each time.)
I used all full install exe's (no installers) so I can setup offline.
Maybe the IE7 download was bad? (Not from MS site?) Maybe a conflict with these programs?

Anyways, I've very picky what I do to my computer since I have it themed n'all, but this has no noticable effects that I can tell.
