Ntoskrnl.exe file change..

by Carol~ Moderator - 3/19/07 12:31 PM In reply to: Still not working right... by LennyV39

Lenny..

If you think it has slowed down due to the Ntoskrnl.exe file change, you might see if you installed update KB929338 this month and when, if in fact you did. I read about it, when it first became available and noticed the replacement of the file. As far as the shell32.dll, I don't know how it would have been introducted. I also don't know the ramifications of trying to uninstall the update. Again, if you installed it. If you feel like experimenting with it, it would be your call to make. I don't know enough about it.

Good luck..
Carol

ntoskrnl.exe, etc.

by LennyV39 - 3/19/07 3:15 PM In reply to: Ntoskrnl.exe file change.. by Carol~ Moderator

Hi Carol,

The ntoskrnl.exe file change started on 3/14 but the SLOW down of AVG started on 3/12 so I'm not sure they are connected. Other posts imply that the ntoskrnl.exe change took place with the Windows Updates that came out on 3/13, which makes sense... but once again, the SLOW down started on 3/12 so it actually slowed down prior to the Windows Updates.

I did install KB929338 on 3/13 so that at least explains the ntoskrnl.exe change. Thanks!

Do you know anything about "fix" that Bob is suggesting? I know I may just be overly cautious but I don't like running vbs scripts without having a reasonable certainty that they are not malicious. I do not hang out on this forum so I'm not sure who the knowledgeable players are here.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The "etc" part..

by Carol~ Moderator - 3/19/07 4:14 PM In reply to: ntoskrnl.exe, etc. by LennyV39

Lenny..

In regard to not knowing who the 'knowledgeable players' are.. I can certainly understand your concerns. Bob (R. Proffitt) is about as knowledgeable as they come. He suggested CCleaner, which I happen to have. If you're asking me, who is no where as knowledgeable, you have all to gain and nothing to lose. You can download CCleaner from the below link. Even if it doesn't contribute to solving your issues, it's worth keeping. (IMO)

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Along with some clean up work, CCleaner is also suggested at the AVG Forum for slowdown issues, if it makes you feel any better. One additional thought, for whatever it's worth. You mentioned the only other major change you made was installing a new version of Spy Sweeper. I don't remember the timeframe, but I do remember a version, which was initially causing a great deal problems. I think it may have been earlier last year. I'm not saying this is the cause of AVG's problems. Only that if you wind up exhausting all other issues, you might want to see if other's are experiencing problems with this specific version. I really don't know how the two would relate.. I'm only "throwing it out there".

Try what Bob has suggested. There may be other things you can do, but it's a good place to start. I'm as "overly cautious" as they come. When you see a red "M" next to a name, they are moderators and you can take their advice "to the bank". ;)

Just my 2¢ and opinion..
Carol

I wrote, 'if you wind up exhausting all other issues', when I meant to write "if you wind up exhausting all other avenues". While you may have understood it, it makes me feel better clarifying it. And isn't that what we all want to do anyway? Feel better.. that is. :)

It seems it was Spy Sweeper

by LennyV39 - 3/19/07 5:45 PM In reply to: The "etc" part.. by Carol~ Moderator

While waiting for replies, I started shutting down various programs and running AVG scans and when I shut down Spy Sweeper, it was back to it's fast scanning. I've put in a tech support request with Webroot and I changed the scheduling on AVG scans so I can first shut down Spy Sweeper first.

Spy Sweeper..

by Carol~ Moderator - 3/19/07 6:16 PM In reply to: It seems it was Spy Sweeper by LennyV39

Lenny..

After I first mentioned SS to you, I went to see exactly when it was I first heard of problems. It turns out it was in July of last year! It was when version 4.5 was upgraded to 5. I hesitated mentioning it to you, but because it had caused so many different problems, I did. I just went to Castle Cop's Spy Sweeper forum, after reading what you just wrote. I wanted to see if there were any issues, with whatever version SS is at now. You don't seem to be the only one with problems. Have a look at some of the threads. You should find it interesting, if nothing else.

Good luck with it..

I do not hang out on this forum so I'm not sure who the know

" I do not hang out on this forum so I'm not sure who the knowledgeable players are here".

The ones with the red 'M' and a few like Carol and Tomron have been here a long time and are very knowledgeable.

I will suggest, d/l a fresh copy of AVG, assuming you are running a firewall or have SP firewall turned on , you can safely uninstall the old copy and re-install.

Take a look to see if scan time improves.

I am running a 300GB H/D split 3 ways, with fully patched XP and WMP etc.

The only anti spy ware I run are Ad-Aware, Spy Bot, an expired AVG Anti Spy ware that no longer scans in real time, but like the other two can be updated and run 'on demand'.

Have Windows Bit Defender running and have seen both the shell 32.dll and the ntmoskl.dll as changed. I ignore because that usually happens when AVG introduces a new build or major program change and can delete the *.DAT file if I want to.

My total scan time is between 4- 50 mins although I do not sit here and time it.

Having read all the comments, I fell it may be the build of AVG that has somehow slowed down although I have not seen the phenomenon in 7 years of using it, going back to AVG 6.0 without the e-mail scanner.

Hope these comments help.

Good luck.

David

Same problem

by tlmck - 4/1/07 5:57 PM In reply to: Ntoskrnl.exe file change.. by Carol~ Moderator

Downloaded latest XP SP2 patch a couple of days ago. Have scanned with AVG twice since then(auto at 9 a.m. daily.) This afternoon AVG informed me of an update. After downloading, ran another scan. AVG found the ntoskrnl.exe file change it did not find this morning. AVG was slow before this, and I have not noticed any other issues with the system. Also, I run Windows defender, so your spyware scanner should not be an issue.

Same trouble

by Watchline - 4/2/07 9:28 AM In reply to: Ntoskrnl.exe file change.. by Carol~ Moderator

I'm have the same problem with AVG and the ntoskrnl.exe. It seems to be getting worse. Other windows applications are taking a long time to open or they are not responding at all. I'm a novice at all of this, so is there an easy fix?

Hi Lenny

by thepuppypup - 4/10/07 6:01 PM In reply to: Still not working right... by LennyV39

I am using also AVG because it has a FREE E-mail scanner.

My computer's technology is perhaps 1 year behind yours, meaning quite similar.

Today my AVG also changed this ntoskrnl.exe and the other mentioned dll which is why I googled around and found this forum but I guess that the forum was not yet able to fix the issue.

Anyway, I can contribute the following:

In my case AVG has not increased its scanning time after the exe and the dll change which may hint that your problem is not necessary directly related to this but could very well be only a coincidental circumstance.

I just returned from Fedora Core 6 back to XP because I had some technical difficulties with the Linux and so I have currently not so many files on my computer but as a comparison my AVG takes at present approximately half an hour for slightly above 50,000 files so since you roughly have a fivefold of files on your computer it sounds reasonable to me that it takes also a fivefold in scanning time and maybe some of your files are even larger which may increase it even a bit further.

The remaining question would be why your AVG was scanning so fast before and here I have unfortunately no idea anymore.

CCleaner is a good program, its free, permanently updated and easy to use. Try also TUNEUP UTILITIES 2006 and JV16 Powertools to clean up your registry. Both have 30 days trial versions, so no harm in trying it.

You may also get rid of quite a few files by deleting all your restore points except the latest one of course.. you might have gigas there!

Try running also another anti virus program. I would recommend here the free version of the BitDefender because this program has often already found what AVG could not see, hence it is an ideal supplement. The free version is fully functional but the E-mail scanner comes only in their commercial versions, so if you like the BitDefender better you could use it to schedule automatically your computer scans and reduce the AVG tasks to scan only incoming Pop E-mails to your E-mail client.

Alternatively you may try to reinstall AVG to see what happens.

Hope that my inputs can lead somehow to a solution.

AVG served me well 4 years

by klippies_dbn - 4/22/07 4:18 PM In reply to: Still not working right... by LennyV39

Started using the AVG AntiSpy & all worked well at 1st. Now I have just about all the problems stated in previous posts. My AVG takes forever 2 scan. Installed a fresh copy after program refused 2 download updates from the net. But the control Center refuse to work & I have to update from net with my laptop & then copy updates 2 a folder 2 update from there.
My Bit Defender also refuse to update.
When I restart my desktop I get a warning that no DvD Rom is found, but it still works fine.
I will try some of the help given here & report back with results.

by klippies_dbn - 4/23/07 2:30 PM In reply to: AVG served me well 4 years by klippies_dbn

I tried all tips and tricks I could find. Nothing seem 2 work. My AVG takes 2 hours 35 Minutes to scan 2,1 Terabytes. I run 2Gig DDR2 Ram, 4x 400Gig HD, 2x250Gig HD. In the past it took +- 1 hour to scan everything. I do not want to redo all but now I get the message when I try and install certian softwares "The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory" got 2 do with Illegal System DLL Relocation. Everything now seems to fall apart ...ANY HELP ??

Had 4 changed items in system32 by AVG free AV

by darclew3 - 1/13/08 3:37 PM In reply to: Still not working right... by LennyV39

uninstalled it, removed system restore points in System Icon, reinstalled it and Ad-Aware 2007 has a restore point to put in after you run a scan. Also, ran chkdsk and there wer 17 more errors I was not aware of. Right click C:, Properties reboot. Worked out well.

Ya thanks for that. After having Dell go in to my computer and get rid of the virus i've since dumped AVG and use Spy Sweeper and Trend Micro P-cillin...No problems since.
