Problem reinstalling ZoneAlarm

by islandporgy - 3/28/07 3:22 PM

I uninstalled ZoneAlarm to reinstall the latest ZoneAlarm, I was giving a message saying that truevector is still running.

This is the message they gave me below:

Setup is unable to log into the truevector service. Install cannot continue without logging into the truevector service.

Please use the (service manager) to shut down the truevector service and then restart the installer program.

Where do I find the Service Manager: or how do I shut down what I can not find. I went to system configuration utility and truevector is not there. When I uninstalled ZoneAlarm I expected to have a clean install after that.

I need help please:

On the same computer I have another HD with XP and when I took your suggestion I saw it their but when I went to the other HD XP I could not find it.

I searched as many places that I could think off and just can not find truevector.
ZoneAlarm will not install.

try this

by mark04276 - 3/28/07 6:54 PM In reply to: Truevector by islandporgy

Boot into safe mode (reboot and hit the F8 key before it says boot in XP or whatever or just keep hitting F8 key to you get a menu of what to boot to, choose safe mode only no networking). When you get into safe mode there should be a folder inside C:/windows/system32 called zonelabs or zone alarm, delete that. then reboot. I dont use zone alarm so if that doesnt work I personally dont have another answer for you.

I will try that even though I deleted all zonealarm files that I found, but they maybe more.

Thanks, it worked!

Things got pretty nasty after I did the latest ZoneAlarm upgrade. There was no indication of trouble until I got to the restart step. The computer kept flipping back to the black screen inviting me to try safe mode, etc. I took your advice and deleted c:\windows\system32\zonealarm and my laptop works again! Now I guess I'll have to try the upgrade again- as a clean install.

Clean uninstall of ZoneAlarm

by scott_789 - 4/6/07 12:32 PM In reply to: Thanks, it worked! by steve0701

Just for future reference....

(I think when I had done this I shut down ZoneAlarm but didn't disable it's "Load ZoneAlarm at startup" process.)

STEP 1: CLEAN UNINSTALL

Please make sure that you have the latest version downloaded already,
and that you have a copy of your current license key. Now follow the steps below:

IMPORTANT - If you have a Cisco VPN client installed, you must first
uninstall the VPN client, then follow the instructions below, and
reinstall the Cisco VPN client again afterwards. This procedure will
remove all traces of the TrueVector service, which was incorporated by
Cisco into the VPN software.

- If you need to, install a 5.5, or earlier 6.x version of the software,
then we use that uninstaller to clean it all up
- Click on Start -> Programs -> Zone Labs
- RIGHT-click on Uninstall Zone Labs Security, then select Properties
- Under Target you will see the following line (the actual drive may be
different on your system):

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe"

Change it to:

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean /rmlicense

(add a space and then the /clean, then a space and then the /rmlicense)

- Click OK to save the new command line.
- Click on Start -> Programs -> Zone Labs -> Uninstall Zone Labs
Security
- Click OK to run the uninstaller, and OK any security alerts that pop
up.

- say "Yes when being prompted for the removal of all files.
- manually delete the Internet Logs folder (under your main Windows
folder)
- manually remove the Zone Labs folder (under your Program Files folder)
- manually delete the Zone Labs folder (under your Windows\System32
folder)
- Empty your temp folder (something like C:\Documents and
Settings\LOGIN-NAME\Local Settings\Temp)
- Empty the Windows Pre-Fetch folder (under your main Windows folder)
- Empty your recycle bin

- Now reboot
- install the latest version

Be sure to take all the default settings during the installation (you
can adjust them later).

Clean install

by islandporgy - 4/6/07 3:49 PM In reply to: Clean uninstall of ZoneAlarm by scott_789

I made a clean install ?, I went to programs then to ZoneAlarm and Uninstall. That is how I always install a new version off ZoneAlarm. Your method is a little different, but I can follow it. I will try that next time.

Never had a problem installing a new version off ZoneAlarm before.

I backed up all my documents and reinstalled windows XP on that computer, (it was time) had not done that in over two years. Computer was running real slow know matter what I did to improve the speed.

Thank You:

Uninstalling before installing new version.

by scott_789 - 4/6/07 4:14 PM In reply to: Clean install by islandporgy

I just wanted to mention --- I used to always uninstall the older version before installing the newer version too. (I figure that it's a good habit to have with all software, unless the install instructions specifically says it's not necessary.)

As far as ZoneAlarm goes though, I started installing the new one over the old one. The brand new one for instance (70.337.000), I haven't had any problems whatsoever doing that.

I like their new icon. Much better than that old red and yellow one!
