I am two weeks away from purchasing my first hdtv and after more than a year of comparing lcd flat panel vs dlp I have decided to go with the Samsung HL-S4266w 42" dlp projection. As with alot consumers I have read countless amounts of reviews and none of them are from people who have had this tv brand for at least six months. So for anyone who has had this dlp model for six months or longer I would so appreciate it if you could leave some feedback. + or - feedback, i would love to hear all.
I have two Samsung DLP tv's. One 56" (HL-S5687W) and one 61" (HL-S6187W). They are both truly a pleasure. One minor but somewhat annoying problem for my critical eye is that during some fast action scenes something called "pixelization" happens on both sets. You just momentarily see these square pixels on whatever is moving quickly. I've researched this and most concur that this is because of the speed of the color wheel and the bulb light engine. Samsung and other DLP's have come out with a faster color wheel and an "LED light engine" which is supposed to fix this problem. Check to see if your HL-S4266W has thse upgrades. Also the problem does not occur at all when I use a blue ray or HD dvd (I have both players). It only happens when I watch HD from DirecTV. Could the DirecTV signal be the problem? I'm sorry I don't know. I can say this: LCD and Plasma TV's have thier own problems. With the EXCELLENT picture available on DLP I don't know why anybody would shell out so much more money for LCD or Plasma---unless they MUST hang it on a wall.
Yes, I like my Sammy - NOW. I was never offered an extended warranty. One from the maker rather than seller would be preferable. Maybe I got a lemon. In any event, it took two expensive repairs barely beyond the one year warranty, to make right for the shoddy or sloppy assembly in the first place.
Authorized repair had a 90 day warranty. Hurried repair #1 found an immediate problem & did a quick fix but didn't determine additional expensive needs. Second time around did make it what it should have been in the first place. Nothing but beautiful performance since.
I had to appeal to Samsung customer relations for mercy. It took persistence as they "lost" sent backup info of repair documentation, then follow up phone calls to get action paid attention to eventually. Oh, this went up their ladder to "executive" customer relations.
First replacing color wheel was $452, subsequent replacing digital power control board was $677. Eventual reimbursement, 3/13/2006 from claim date 10/22/2005, was $515. No idea how they determined the amount. The long time frame included the two incidences of their losing track of the faxed info.
Nice to get some consideration but I am left with no confidence in the Sammy build quality, their reliability, or consistency of customer service.
As I said, the set has purred like a cat ever since. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. Considering I feel fine about rear projectors, I'd advise you to take a look at an alternative of the somewhat more expensive Sony SXRDs. Even better performance & more expressed admiration for Sony customer service by posters here.
I looked at the Samsung and Toshiba d.l.p. sets they both had stunning picture quality I went with the Toshiba only because I wanted a 70" + screen size I was also aware about possible lamp and color wheel failure and rainbow effect. I have had no problems after 14 months looks as good as the day I bought it, Also I have had many many friend come over for football and baseball, and no one has ever seen a rainbow effect I would say d.l.p. is the way to go If you want a huge screen size. but for smaller screen sizes l.c.d. may be a better choice. I know its hard to decide because they all look so good good luck and please post back, dont forget your 5.1. sound and snack bar stew
I have the Samsung 5687 DLP set and I am very happy with my purchase. For anything over 50", the DLP option to me was a no brainer. Unless you've got to hang it on the wall DLP sets are about half what Plasma sets are and they display 1080p...most plasma sets are 720p. One word about picture breakup with action movement-that is a bandwith issue with the source be it Direc-tv or cable. I have the same problem with cable but my HD-DVD player has none of these artifacts.
One more thing, the only drawback to DLP I've found is the brightness falloff at viewing angles off center. It's not bad but Plasma has no falloff. hope this helps.
