standard up-converting dvd player vs. hd or blu-ray

by Nedrow - 3/28/07 8:19 AM

This may have been covered to death somewhere else, because it seems an obvious question, but I haven't found an answer yet.

For standard dvd's to look the best, is it worth investing in an hd dvd or blu-ray player, or would an up-converting standard dvd player do the same job (assuming you use hdmi cables and have an hdtv).

Basically, I have over 400 standard dvd's, and I want them to look as good as possible.

Any advice?

I TOOK THE PLUNGE AND HAVE A BLUE RAY

by stewart norrie - 3/28/07 10:48 AM In reply to: standard up-converting dvd player vs. hd or blu-ray by Nedrow

At 69 years old I did not have time for the chips to fall between h-d and blue ray. And for the first month it was basically a door stopper . But know blockbustor is renting them in the store for the same fee as regular d.v.d.s+ soon iam sure they will come down to an affordable price I paid $920 for mine and when they drop around $500 I think they will really sell well. Anyway 1080P is beautiful as good as 70m.m. film especially if you have a large screen size mine is 72" and you can really tell the difference between 1080I and P and sound is super d.t.s. pulls you into the movie. I just bought the new James Bond movie CASINO ROYAL. Had 9 friends watch it and they could not believe how great the sound and picture quality ws and they all own hi-def t.v. in closing standard d.v.d. look great but once you see a blue ray movie there is no compairson but to tell you the truth I believe my old DENON 2910/955 standard d.v.d. player gave a tad better picture with standard d.v.d.s remember that the h.d. player is 1080I so there is a difference good luck stewee

Ok, I think* I understand the question...

"For standard dvd's to look the best...." yes "an up-converting standard dvd player" will do the same job. Actually, probably even better, but it depends on which model you buy. Denon, all in all, seem to make the best. Anywhere from about $150 to $1500. Actually you can go up to $3500 or more, but the $1500ish dvd-3910 has the same Realta HQV chipset. Down the line you get REON, then Faroudja, then Denon. Whats also nice about these players is that they are "universal", able to play many kinds of formats including sacd and dvd-a (many seem not to care, but I do).

However, I have seen 5th element standard dvd AND blu-ray on the same Blu-Ray player thru a mid-sized sxrd, and I could not tell the difference in pq when chaning discs. Note that this movie is considered to be very well mastered. Perhaps a different movie would give much more dramtatic differences between the two formats. Well, Stew made some good points, but, Basically, if you have over 400 sd movies, and want them to look as good as possible, get a high-end Denon. Bang for the buck, try Oppo 981 perhaps (faroudja).

I have the standard d.v.d. the fifth Elemite and got a free blue ray version with the Sony. and the picture quality is a million % better with blue ray Are you using a h.d.m.i. cable for true 1080P? also go to the Sony set up menue where you can output 480. 720. 1080I or P and auto must be set to auto My on screen display does switch from 1080I to P so This seems to be the correct set up PLEASE POST BACK It seems you are having problems Blue ray puts out the best picture I have ever seen and make sure you get a copy of the new James Bond Casino Royal in blue ray its beautiful waiting to hear from you steweeeeee

this was at a local big box a couple of months ago. Looked fantastic both ways, but yes, perhaps it was mistakenly set to something other than 1080p. Remember, your schwartz is bigger! 72 inches..... sxrd was a smaller one. Don't know exactly, but I remember it looked smaller than 42".... do they make a 37"?

Anyways, Im glad you are enjoying your system so much. Between 72" Tosh, Blu-Ray, and AT.... do you ever get out much? haha

lofty ambitious tastes. So you gravitate towards the top end of Denon's universal disk player line. I did get a 2910 from my brick & mortar guy at online prices (seems fine to me) & picked up a 1720 for $79 there when superceded ( for DVDs in the spare room.)

Are you a guy, who if he hit the lottery big time, would install a $50,000 bank of monoblocks to push those elusive dream speakers? Problem is there is never just one right answer. If you went that way, would you then fall prey to wondering if you should have gone the route of those 104dB super efficeint fully loaded corner horns being coaxed along by a couple pf five watt SETs (single ended triode) amps?

Food for thought.

Stick with DVD

by bevillan - 3/28/07 2:58 PM In reply to: standard up-converting dvd player vs. hd or blu-ray by Nedrow

Give BR and HD-DVD standalones some more time to drop in price. In the meantime go buy a $150 upconverting DVD player that will make your 400 DVD collection look great. Now older DVDs don't upconvert very well sometimes but modern ones look awesome on well made upconverting DVD players. I have a Sony one I got for $120 and love it.

Wait until BR players come down to $300 before you jump on board. In fact when the players are around $300 they will be better quality than the ones you can buy right now for $1000.

Upconverters are great, if you have the right one.

So being an employee of a Magnolia HT inside a Best Buy offers many nice things. First off I pretty much have a complete Audio/Video Laboratory at my fingertips and I've played around with pretty much every imaging device we have to find out just which player is the one to get.

Like many of us have said so far, there is no one right answer. But I will absolutely say that the picture quality from a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD is just fantastic. As far as video upconversion is concerned, you are better off getting a stand alone player to play your regular DVDs, than using the upconversion capabilities of the new nex-gen players (BD, HD-DVD).

Bang for the Buck, if your going to be purchasing in the store is probably the Sony player for around $100. I find that the video quality is considerably better than the LG, and Samsung models in the same price range. The new Panasonic player that is capable of 1080p is good too, especially if you have a 1080p TV, but I think it's just nice that it is geared to fit the Resolution of the screen, than the actual video quality. To get better 1080p reproduction go check out the Denon 1930ci ($350) , or 2930ci ($800ish). Both of these players are capable of upconversion up to 1080p, as well as CD, SACD, DVD-A (big plus if you're an Audiophile), and have a pure direct mode to turn off the video processors, when you're listening to music.

I like the 1930ci because it's a very good affordable player, but I personally do not think there is a better DVD picture out there, than out of the 2930ci, for under $1000. It handles everything very well. Go check out the review on CNET.
