What is the best free web-based e-mail service for someone with a slow connection? I live in a rural area and there is nothing I can do to improve my connection speed(beleive me, I've tried.) I'm unhappy with Yahoo Mail, which is the current service I use. I keep getting logged out while I'm checking my e-mail and when I contacted their customer service, they told me every time this happens I should just sign back in again. With the number of times this is happening, however, it makes checking my e-mail take forever. I want to try a new service, but I wanted to get some advice first. I'm looking for an e-mail service that doesn't use too many graphics that take a long time to load and doesn't have unnecessary features. I tried Hotmail once and it was too slow for my connection speed(28.8). Can anyone help me? Thank you for your time.
that your isp has an email service. Most of the ads should not be there, since you have them as your isp service.
Connecting at 28.8 kps is the pits. You should, on dial up be able to connect at 56 kps, unless the modem you have in your computer is 28.8 kps. My guess is that your computer has a 28.8 kps modem. Try replacing the modem with a faster one.

Many around here in the sticks around Lake Wallenpaupack get 28.8 to 30 with 56K modems. Even after trying various modems and settings. Also, as you know, 56K violates the Federal law, about 53.x is the legal limit.
Nothing better to do today but give a fellow Pennsylvanian a hard time. LOL
Ray, it sounds like we don't live too far away from each other. I live in South East Ohio near the Ohio River. And FYI for the guy who said my modem was the problem: I do have a 56K modem and internet connection. I spoke to my phone company about why I can only log in at 28.8K and they told me that the phone lines are at least 30 years old and they can't handle that kind of speed. They told me that they had received complaints from many other people in my area, but they have no plans to update the phone lines b/c it would be too expensive(cough, cough, B.S., cough.) I've been pestering Verizon and Time Warner(which, by the way, are the only phone and cable companies we have to choose from out here) for several years about bringing broadband to my community. All I keep hearing is "a few more years."
Thanks for the tips about Gmail.
I'm spoiled. I have DSL up to 768kbs. I never want to go back to dial up again.
I like gmail also. It still will not download any faster than your modem allows.
The latest is that Landis wants a fair chance. Ijust wanted to get out of work today. Had a bad day. Is it Friday the 13th?
Sorry I can't help the other person any more than that
Rick
I like Gmail, in large part because it has a rather "Spartan" interface. No frills, just what you need and nothing more. Plus, all the ads are text ads, and very unobtrusive. You also get almost 3GB of storage space, so you don't need to worry about people sending you attachments or anything like that.
"I like Gmail, in large part because it has a rather "Spartan" interface." I'll agree to that! Another nifty thing I've noticed with GMail is that, if it takes longer then usual to log in, then it'll switch to a "basic html" interface. Makes it great for slower connections.
is free, easy to use, you get 1 gb of storage capacity, and I love it's spam filter, I currently have an email account with comcast, yahoo, and hotmail, and in the only one that I can actually filter the spam mail is with hotmail. Besides I think it should be ok with your low speed connection...(my other suggestion would be yahoo, but you already tried that)
hope it helps, Marcelo.
Actually, you start with 250mb for storage until hotmail decides that you are going to keep using hotmail and then offer you 1gb of storage.
But you must also be aware, that hotmail inboxes are easy targets for spam as well. I've been using two hotmail inboxes and two gmail inboxes for about two years now. My Gmail inbox picks out the little spam I have really well, and I usually never have to do with it, but in hotmail, even after I pick "Report this as spam", the same exact email will come to me in a day or two. So two thumbs down for hotmails spam gaurd.
Also, Hotmail will be eventually switching over to it's new "Live" interface, which will slow your slow internet connection down even further. It's quite heavy and awkward in my opinion.
The same for Yahoo!, they'll be switching over to their new "Web 2.0" design in mail just like they did their homepage.
I prefer GMail not only because of the interface, 2gig and counting email storage, but also because of free POP access! Which may be a good idea for people with slow connections.
Download and install Mozilla Thunderbird (a free email client) and follow the links to set up the pop address in Gmail and voila! No need to go to any websites, just open up Thunderbird and "get all mail" and there you go!
