You can use any Cat cable you can find except one that is called a cross over cable. But those a fairly rare now. Cat5e and Cat6 is probably what you will find the most of.
You still need to install the printer on the Desktop because before it was installed for USB and now it needs to be for a network.
All-In-One printers can be a problem during install, so it is best to disable antivirus and firewall software. Also check the Installation CD for any finger prints or dirt that may cause problems during install.
You mentioned in your post that I still need to install the printer software on the Dell desktop. The HP printer software has already been installed on the Dell desktop which I've used just a few times. The desktop will be one year old at the end of this month so will the Dell notebook; both computers my brother purchased last year and had his IT guy set everything up for me here in the house.
My ISP is Bell South and I now have DSL "Lite" service. I'm able to surf wirelessly on the Dell notebook courtesy of a Linksys router. Again as I asked before since the printer software has already been installed on the Dell desktop do I need to do an uninstall of the HP printer software on the Dell desktop then do a reinstall of it? Thank you for your post.
You do not need a part number for an ethernet cable. All you need to know is the desired length. They are cheap at www.pccables.com.
BUT, do not buy one! You do not need it. If your printer works right now attached to your bedroom computer, the notebook in the living room can also take turns using it right now. Its called "Printer Sharing."
First, you ought to get a network connection working between the two (or more) computers. You will find that handy for lots of reasons. Its included in both computers' programs already; all you have to do is to turn it on! (You can hire a neighborhood "Geek" to come in and set it up for you in 15 minutes for less than the money you would spend on a long ethernet cable at your local store!)
Then, on your Notebook, go to "Add-a-Printer." One of the questions is, "is printer ATTACHED to your computer, or to some other computer you own?" This question leads you into the world of Networking/ Shared printers. All your computers use the same, single internet connection, right? All your computers CAN use the same, single printer the same way.
What is unusual with the finished result: Well, the bedroom computer has to be ON, for the printer to work for the notebook. Of course, if the bedroom is OFF when you try to print from the notebook, the print jobs will be SAVED FOR THE PRINTER, until it is later turned on!
There is another way--making your printer a NETWORKED PRINTER. In that setup, the printer stands alone, not directly connected to EITHER computer, so then it is addressed as a network station by either computer. The only advantage I know of is that the notebook can cause printing when bedroom is off. Feel free to email me if you want. Paul Archibald <archibaldpaul@hotmail.com>
There is more to Printer and File Sharing.Though some of the information is close enough to read up to this point there is more that has to be done to do this correctly. One thing the SSID has to be changed to a name that is an acceptable path. You have to establish a New Port. The Ping,if it works will become your defaulted printing ability providing for both the name and the address to which you will print to.This occurs from the remote address, that is your Laptop and it appears whenever when you click on print from the remote location.I recommend a support call to the manufacturer of the printer even though it appears that much of the information is being piece-mealed together.
A router and a modem are not necessarily the same piece,my particular set up is a Linksys Wireless-B Broadband Router coupled with a Westell Modell 6100(soon to be replace with a more up to date model)Though the Westell on its bottom says modem/router it is not that at all,it is merely a DSL/Modem.Does your particular circumstance provide for two components like this or is the modem/router a combination piece? If you read the comment above I'am in agreement that you do not need to purchase any new equipment outside of a router if in case you are not networked. This was in relation to the considerable discussion on a new cable, you dont need to change much of anything if you are already networked. If and when you are ready to at least test if in fact the printer responds to the print command from the remote location,I would recommend moving to a location whereby your remote access is in plain site of the printer. This would assist you at a later point if there is need to troubleshoot if indeed failure occurs.I know for a fact that plaster on top of metal can cause interference. This would be done mostly and simply to establish a trial and error process and would allow for part of what may not be necessary to be removed from the troubleshooting process and as well it would be designed to save time.
Sorry but actually the Westell 6100 is a modem and a router but it does not have a switch with extra ports like most routers.
"Westel ProLine™ Modems - manageable, full-feature DSL access
1 Ethernet and 1USB port with built-in router (Model 6100)"
I was and am aware that the Westell Model 6100 is a DSL Modem/Router though indeed the underside says only DSL Router it is in principal a DSL Modem/Router.It appears as well that the reference above of soon to be replaced,is that there appears to be a conflict which I'am going to troubleshoot a dated software error message that was generated by Dell Software Support. The error message said that the Westell 6100,had a software version that could and needed to be updated as the Dell Wireless card was recieving dated information which was causing a failure to occur in an attempt by my Inspiron 2200 to communicate with and here is the problem which Dell suggests is a conflict. In actuality it is the Linksys Wireless Broadband-B router that the error messages were coming from and Dell proposed one or the other has to go with perhaps an upgraded Component entirely a distinc possibility. It was Verizon that was able to assist me as there was an unexplained SSID Name that was visible which only just happened. We corrected the SSID problem however the updating the software maybe the next step.
i wish to connect my macbook wirelessly to my printer. the printer is connected to a desktop PC. and thus each time i want to print on my other 3 windows laptops ill have to on the desktop. but i cant seem to figure out how to configure the macbook so that i will be able to print the same way. can anyone guide me pls! thx!
I personally do not know the Mac however the google search ability is the equal to an informed guide.I would most definetly recommend searching using google.com. While searching google.com, a number of Websites were found to respond to the quiry MAC-Remote Access-Printer Sharing.I have not checked out the veracity as to these sites however it maybe well worth your time to take a good hard look. www.ehmac.com/showthread.php?t=29269-60k-Supplemental Result www.experts-exchange.com/apple/operating_systems/Q21607357.html-67k-Supplemental Result tes.uab.es/scicourse/members/higr/remote-desktop.html-32k access.jassey78.org/block-internet-access/-83k-SupplementalResult www.apple.com/business www.machelpmate.com A good search ability know-how can prove critical when your needs need to be met.
This thread has not been responded to in awhile, so here goes...
I have a HP6980 wireless printer. It is connected to a desktop via an ethernet cable to a Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router and works fine. I have two laptops I would like to use the printer with wirelessly. I loaded the software on one laptop and configured it to work wireless. It sees the printer while in setup, but won't connect. From reading all I could about this - it seems you can't do it both ways. You have to disconnect the ethernet cable in order for the wireless to work. Anybody here had any experience with that prinetr, or maybe someone can shed some light on this for me.
Your post is buried and may not receive the attention it needs. I'd make a new post next time.
To me this sounds like the old user or account issue. Many forget to create a matching account on the host machine.
