Hello all, and thanks in advance for any advice you may provide.
I'm looking to buy a laptop in the $1500-$2000 range that's extremely good at multi-tasking: iTunes, Opera, AIM, USB devices all running at the same time without lag. I don't do much photo/video processing, but I would like to be able to run some games and Corel Photo Paint without too much trouble.
What've I read so far points me towards the Core 2 Duo with at least 2.0 Ghz and 1 GB Ram. I want to stay with XP or Vista. I would also like Bluetooth and wireless, but I assume those are fairly standard these days.
What specifics should I be looking for so my computer will not be bogged down when lots of things are running?
I've yet to see such a machine. Even more so with Vista on 1GB RAM.
Bob
Well you know what you want ![]()
Look at Dell, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Toshiba ... If you stay with these brands, you'll get a good machine.
The multitasking isn't only in the CPU, it is also in the RAM. If you don't have enought RAM to charge all the applications at the same time, the system will transfer the datas in its virtual memory ( on the hard-drive ). And because the HDD is the slowest component of your computer, the system performances will be affected ... Today, having 2 GB of RAM isn't a luxe. Get 1 GB ( 1x1024 MB ) and buy another 1 GB stick from Crucial ( sometimes, it is less expensive ).
Get an ATi Mobility Radeon X1400 and higher to be able to play games ( nVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 and higher ).
No needs to get a 2.00 GHz. When a 1.66 GHz Core Duo beats an Intel Pentium 4 3.4 GHz, a Core 2 Duo 1.66 or 1.83 is more than enought. Save your money on this component.
Thanks Ghost.
I was actually looking at the Lenovo Thinkpad T60 because it did very well in the multitasking test here. It seems to have the criteria you were talking about:

Hey Guys-
Does anyone know when Dell will be coming out with new Inspirion laptops? I think their E1505/1705/1405 are in need of a redesign. I've had Dells before, and have had good luck, so I would like to get another one. I've checked out other brands to be sure, and I am considering a purchase of a HP Pavillion 6000 but if Dell is going to come out with something new soon, I would like to wait and see what it's going to look/perform like before I make my decision. So....has anyone heard ANYTHING??
Look for new Centrino Pro notebooks and maybe other mobile tech from all manufacturers starting in May.

i've also heard that the thinkpad below is good for multitasking.

You absolutely don't need to buy a machine of 2200 $ US !!!
The video card is oriented through OpenGL tasks, For gaming, you'll have better performances with a Mobility Radeon X1xxx card.
