I had not understood the difference between digital and optical zoom before coming across a recent article lby Chris Miller (http://www.techlore.com/article/16902/Optical-Zoom-vs.-Digital-Zoom/).
And after digging into this, it is pretty clear to me that the camera I want to buy has to have a highly developed OPTICAL zoom capability.
Who can share their experiences with optical zoom on different brands of camera?
What do you think would be the difference between "highly developed OPTICAL zoom" and optical zoom?
I will share that as you go past 6X or more you'll want to see image stabilization.

Except for very unusual situations....digital zoom should not be used, as it will degrade the image.
Here is a link to the most popular digital cameras with 12X optical zoom:

Any of them would be a good choice.

If you have a large budget (over $1,000) you should look at DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras and lenses.

The Olympus SP-550 has a very powerful and versatile lens along with excellent mechanical IS but what exactly are you looking for and for how much money? If you dont want to spend over $300 there was a post on some 12x zoom cameras. You should find a Lumix or something in there. But most importantly what are you going to use it for?
