To those who think

by hriik - 3/20/07 9:40 PM In reply to: Maybe awkward, but not wrong by froasier

To those who think it's OK to snap a pic of me in a "public" place, feel free to do so if you want your cameraphone crushed under my heel!

costly

Then be prepared to count the cost. What they are doing [if not invasive] is not a criminal or civil wrong, what you say you will do is. The court costs alone would scare you, the criminal record would haunt you and the hospital bill would waste you

costly eh?

by hriik - 3/21/07 12:15 AM In reply to: costly by smjcee

I don't live in your country. I realize it's the most litigious society in the world but here I would be justified in destroying your property if you invaded my privacy! Sue me....you'll lose!! (plus we don't pay medical bills here....we're not run by conservative louts!)

assume

by smjcee - 3/21/07 12:33 AM In reply to: costly eh? by hriik

I dont live in the most either and if you think medical expenses are free anywhere you are a fool... someone has to pay or there would be no doctors to see you.. and if you live by the sword I pity you for those that strike the first blow do not always strike the last or the most damaging. For someone to object to having there image recorded you must spend a lot of time in hiding or perhaps in a village that has yet to have the intrusion of cctv cameras. would you attack those with such hatred and the people who operate them. ouch. now that would be expensive.

You don't live is the "most"???
btw....nowhere in my post did I say that medical expenses are free. I just said we don't pay the medical bills. I assumed you would realize that I meant that any bills would be covered by public health care and so your argument in that regard means nothing to me.
A photo taken of me without my permission here would be considered an assault and I would therefore be justified in doing what I said I'd do. Crush the phone under my heel!

Although you have drifted off topic rather badly, I will try to explain a bit. I live in a place where we believe that medical care is a right for everyone, not just the wealthy. All of society puts money into the medical system and all are afforded the same care. I don't think that could be called scrounging. I call it fairness. I know that you might not be accustomed to fairness, living in a society where anyone has a right to walk up to you and snap your picture and you have no (apparent) right to do anything about it but........

To you who think you're going to smash my property under your heel, feel free to try to do so if you want to see how your heel feels when it's inserted in your left nostril.

THE ANSWER IS BASED " INTENT" AND ETIQUETTE

by skyelarkyru - 3/20/07 9:08 PM In reply to: Is wrong to take candid cell phone pictures of stuff/people? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

IF WE COULD ASSUME :) THAT THE PERSON TAKING THE PICTURES HAD HONORABLE INTENTIONS NOT TO CAUSE HARM,EMBARASSMENT OR ANY PERCEIVED NEGATIVE AGENDA OF TAKING THE PICTURE OF THE PERSON/OBJECT. THEN WE COULD CONCLUDE NO HARM NO FOUL.
HOWEVER, THE WORLD IS MADE UP OF ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE. SOME TROUBLED SOME HARMLESS, FROM PORNOGRAPHY TO CHILD PORNOGRAPHY. FROM HEROS TO VILLIANS. UNTIL WE CAN PROTECT THE INNOCENT (CHILDREN) MY VOTE IS NO!!! WE HAVE FAILED CHILDREN MISERABLY IN MANY OTHER WAYS.

THERE MUST BE A COMMON BOUNDARY FOR THE USE OF CELLPHONE ETIQUETTE. NOT NECESSARILY LEGISLATIVE BUT SOCIETY DRIVEN. WE MUST AS AN INDIVIDUAL, AND A CITIZEN HOLD OUR FELLOW PERSONS TO CELLPHONE ETIQUETTE. JUST AS WE DO AT THE DINNER TABLE (FLATULANCE,GAS, IS UNACCEPTABLE;CHEWING WITH YOUR MOUTH OPEN). THESE THINGS ARE UNWRITTEN BUT UNDERSTOOD BY ALL. THAT THEY ARE BAD MANNERS
AN SO WE MUST DEVELOP, AS A SOCIETY, PROPER TECHNOLOGY ETIQUETTE!!!

that surely depends where you live, not everyone sits down to dinner with several knives and forks and follows the western traditions of what you call etiquette... or do you imply that different traditions should be frowned upon and we should all be the same? If so what would be the model?

If it's in the public domain how can it be wrong

by smjcee - 3/20/07 9:14 PM In reply to: Is wrong to take candid cell phone pictures of stuff/people? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If it's in the public domain how can it be wrong.
As for asking permission PLEASE if you see someone being attacked in the street DON'T stop to ask the attacker for permission, just take the damn photos. Trying to create gray ares for right and wrong is not advisable.
Ask yourself a question.. if you can't restrict various street cams taking live video, shop cams, bank cams etc etc taking live video and photographs is it right to stop anyone.
If its on view to the public eye why shouldn't it be on view to the third eye of the camera.
Invasive photographs however are a different question and should be dealt with in a different discussion.
another question.... if taking your photograph is invading your personal liberties.... isn't stopping someone invading there's

Photos

Candid photos have been taken of unknowing subjects since the invention of the camera... it's called photography. Everyday there is a photographer with a high quality SLR camera and a telephoto lens taking someones candid photo. Usually it is for photographic art, students in a photography class, or the CIA. Whatever... candid photos are nothing new.

What IS new is that every 13 year old moron (pick an age, 13 just came to mind) has a camera phone, and until the 'new' wears off, is snaping photos of everything. That is still ok with me. If at my age (54) I do anything that attracts a photographer's attention, then that is good because that means something about me is still interesting! <Smirking>

Like another post elluded to... If it gets published I get paid! Cool.

Camera phones

by TriniMaster1 - 3/20/07 10:00 PM In reply to: Photos by Lshirk

Back in August 2005, a guy exposed himself on a New York City subway car. The woman to whom the guy was pleasuring himself reached for her camera phone, snapped a picture of the guy "in the act," took it to cops and then posted it on the Internet.

So there are definitely advantages to having camera phones.

He sued her

by 94pwhref - 12/26/07 8:11 PM In reply to: Camera phones by TriniMaster1

And then he sued her for taking his picture without asking his permission, and for posting it on the internet.
