Hey, Use Picasa 2. It is a free graphics program available through Google and is great....for lots of things. It will make gift CDs, prints, email, etc. of all the photos you can possibly take. Next time, I want to go to Australia, too..

Slide Shows

I've used a package called Albumatic, a freeware download. It is quite good. JASC has a package AfterShot which also works well. Kodak Picture Easy is good also.

photo project

by skimble - 3/18/07 4:15 AM In reply to: Need advice to make a quality slide show of my trip by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I use Ulead VideoStudio 10. It's a simple to use Video creator and allows you to create a professional quality DVD of your photos with all the features you require. You can also mix stills with video and use your own commentary. It has zoom and pan features which give 'life' to your pictures. Sounds like I work for Ulead but I don't. I've created a number of DVDs for travel/holiday home companies using stills of their locations and properties and they keep coming back for more. It's around 70 USD but my first project using the software netted me a weeks holiday in Spain for two, all expenses paid.My second paid for the software twice over. You could use Microsoft Movie Maker but it just doesn't match up. VS 10 lets you create your finished project in all sorts of formats, even an iPod Video file. Hope this helps, Jim

You may have misunderstood

by Lights1912 - 3/18/07 6:57 PM In reply to: Photos on computer by morristown

Dear Morristown:

I think you may have misunderstood Chuck's question. He is looking for a way to make a slide show presentation of his trip. However, to answer your question, if you are not computer saavy and there is a local computer store in your area, I would recommend taking your PC in to them and ask them to burn your data files to CD or DVD (if you have a dvd reader on your new machine.) You could also bring in both towers and ask them to transfer the data. Generalkly this type of service runs about $60 - $80 per hour USD.

Your other option is to burn your data files to cd yourself, if you have a cd burner in your old machine, or transfer them to a flash drive and use that to take the files to the new system. If old the system is slow, this could take some time and, in the case of a thumb drive, you may not have a USB2.0 port. There may also be other issues causing the system to run slowly such as spyware, adware, trojans, viruses, failing hardware, etc. If this is the case, some of your files may be infected. I would call the local computer shop first, and by this I do not mean a national chain store, I mean a Mom and Pop shop - they still exist.

Slide Show Software

by waytron - 3/18/07 6:24 AM In reply to: Need advice to make a quality slide show of my trip by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

There are so many slide show making software titles out there it would make your head spin. Some of my very first digital slide shows were produced using PowerPoint and Corel Presentation and it is doable, however, it may not be the ideal solution for you. One main factor is deciding what you want to do with the finished slide show:

Road Show- If you are planning to give a talk about your trip at the local senior center, then PowerPoint may be the way to go, mainly because of the control that you have over the show during playback. You also have more control over inserting text, bullets and printing out handouts.
Narration – If you need to add your own narration to the slide show, PowerPoint has some neat features to automate this task.
Text – If you need to add a lot of text, Graphs and bullet lists, then PowerPoint is probably your best choice. You can add text with most all of the packages but usually not with the same control that PowerPoint offers.
Music – You can insert music with many of the software packages, however some software titles make it very easy to edit, cut and fade music to match the slide show. PowerPoint is not very good with music.
DVD output - If you are just planning on sending your show out to family and friends or just want it for your own personal enjoyment, PowerPoint can be more difficult to output to DVD and generally takes longer to produce your show. I would check out some of the other packages specifically designed for Slide Shows.

My Personal Choice - I have tried several slide show producing packages, and to date have not found the ideal one (and probably never will). Each one has some great capabilities, one of my favorite features is being able to add some motion by zooming and panning a photo. This can really spice up a long, boring string of still photographs. One of my personal favorites for about $30 is currently Magix Photostory on CD or DVD 5. I have been using it for several years now and have found that it has most all of the features I want, is easy to use and seems to work without a lot of problems. But this is totally a matter of personal preference and I am sure there will be dozens of other great suggestions here in this forum. A lot of it is based on what you are most familiar with and if you are currently a very proficient PowerPoint user, you may find that is the easiest way to go. I am not sure about your exact version of Nero and what it may come with for creating slide shows.

Demo/Trial – You can download free trial versions from most every software company. I would suggest that you try a few to get an idea of how they work and to help you determine which features are most important to you. You can also go to Download.com and simply search for Slide show software and try one or two.

Word of Caution – Regardless of which software product you decide to use, I can not stress enough the importance of running a short test before sitting down and spending countless hours, days or weeks creating a slide show only to find out that it will not play in your specific DVD player. Not all DVD players, Blank DVD’s or Programs are created equal and it is not uncommon to run into problems getting your slide show to play in some DVD players. Create a short 5 or 10 photo show, add some music, use some of the features you like, burn it to a DVD and then try it in every player you plan to use.

PowerPoint and DVD Burning

by Lights1912 - 3/18/07 7:00 AM In reply to: Need advice to make a quality slide show of my trip by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Dear Chuck:

PowerPoint is an excellent program to use for the purposes you mentioned. Many large corporations utilize the capabilities of PowerPoint to produce corporate presentations for clients, shareholders, to present new products to the public or their target audience, etc. When you walk into your local home improvement centre and see a TV monitor playing a presentation on the benefits of the latest rubbish compactor, chances are good it was done in PowerPoint. PowerPoint gives you the ability to integrate photos, sound bytes, text and movies into your presentation. Another great feature about Microsoft’s Office Suite product line is that they come embedded with a very detailed and in-depth help menu which is easy to understand, even by the novice. Microsoft also has on-line forums and Q&A’s which, although some can be very technical, often offer more in depth help. While I am not the biggest fan of Microsoft products, I would highly recommend using PowerPoint for your presentation, however, depending on the quality of the presentations you want to produce you may want to consider some additional software. By profession, I am a graphic designer and artist and use a myriad of graphics editing programs. I would recommend editing your photographs prior to making your presentation.

Personally, I have been using Adobe’s PhotoShop since its inception, however, for the novice I would not suggest going out and purchasing a software suite that is going to be pricey, and complicated to use. Although I have over 20 years experience using PhotoShop there are still features of which I am not familiar. Adobe does make a watered down version of PhotoShop called PhotoShop Elements. It is much easier to use, as it does not have all the features of the standard edition of PhotoShop but will do the basics of digital photo editing such as red-eye removal, light adjustments, shadow and highlight adjustments, etc. It is about ¼ the cost of the regular PhotoShop CS2 currently available.

There are other options such as open source software. Depending upon your operating system (I use both MAC’s and PC’s as well as Linux operating systems for my work) you can download some very high quality photo editing software for free. Gimp is one, and is available for all three platforms. Although it is a bit complicated, it is open source and therefore free. The downloads can be found here: http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ Another option is PaintShop Pro X. Recently purchased by Corel, who was the leader in digital editing until surpassed by Adobe, PaintShop Pro is very easy to use and much less expensive than the Adobe products, running about $60 USD. The reason I am suggesting photo editing software is simple, while you may create the greatest PowerPoint presentation ever produced by mankind, if the elements of that presentation are too dark, too light or grainy, all your work is for naught. In other words, before you paint the front parlour walls, prime them first.

Next, to address the second part of your question. Assuming you have a DVD burner in your machine, using Nero to burn DVD’s depends on what version of Nero you have, in what part of the world you are located and if you want to play your DVD’s on a TV DVD player or only on a computer. Although I live in the States, many of my family members live in the UK and there are two different formats between the two countries. Therefore, if I wish to make a compilation I am forced to make it twice in many cases, one compatible with US DVD players and one compatible with British DVD players. If you have the settings for your Nero set to the region in which you are located, such as US, Canada or UK, then use the Nero Express feature of your Nero software to burn your DVD’s. It is a relatively fool proof method and will produce quality DVD’s which can be viewed on both TV’s and PC’s. Here is the link to a blog which give excellent instructions on the use of Nero. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=78987

Good luck with your project.

You should be able to make the slide show of your pictures using Nero.I don't know if you will be able to add audio files or text to it using this program.

I have a photo editing program called ACDSee Pro, and it allows you to add audio files and or text to a slide show, and it is rather easy to use. The program is a little on the pricey side, but in my opinion, it's worth every penny.

I really like the way that photos can be made into a slide show with music and effects using the free download "PhotoStory3 for Windows"
