64 bit all the way

by Frodo420024 - 3/19/07 4:19 AM In reply to: 32 bit vs 64 bit by rayanz2

I have no need to stick with 32 bit. This weekend I build a 'Home theater PC' with supersilent components and all - a cool little machine doing CD & DVD archiving, streaming of TV recordings, timeshifting and the usual stuff. It's running 64 bit software all the way, for a 30-40 % performance gain over conventional software.

Of course, I couldn't have done that with Windows. Even if I invested in Vista Ultimate, it has too much DRM built in to do what I want, and lots of nice 3rd party apps exist only in 32 bit versions. It has no need for antivirus software or other protective measures and maintainance. The SW didn't cost me a dime, and is of course legal all the way through (90 % GPL).

It's running Linux, of course. MythTV is a bloody miracle :)

the answer to Vista bugs

by JMStern - 3/17/07 9:55 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

is called Linux! I have never been a big fan of Windows - having opted for OS/2 when it seemed prudent. But our fiends at MS did a better job of marketing, and like the rest of the world, got stuck with Windows regardless.

The last copy of Windows i bought was Win2K, as i build my own machines. My two desktop machines run Suse Linux just fine. The only drawback, which you are facing with Vista, is drivers for 3rd party hardware. I live with one partition of win2k, so i can load my digital camera etc, and everything else belongs Tux! all your base are belong to us!

If you agree to Vista's license terms and conditions ....

by intrepi - 3/17/07 11:32 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I've read Microsoft's terms and conditions with respect to Vista's OS and I can't put the blame on Microsoft as they have warned me there are no warranties, guarantees in regards to installing, running or functioning with any software that has not been certified to operate with Vista. Vista has been rushed to market, too many burrs on it's edges and now the neverending updates begins. I for one, could not get past the licensing terms as I found them to be just too much to swallow.
I agree with MS that they should be able to protect their software but I'm a little tired of them doing it on my time and expense. I cannot understand some of their support personnel based in India and I'm a little tired of the 42 digit authorization code, online time, telephone calls to reactivate, etcetera, etcetera. Enough already.

Why don't you go back to what works (XP)?

by santuccie - 3/17/07 12:21 PM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I grew up in a PC family, and have been using Microsoft operating systems ever since DOS 5. While I agree with you that Vista may actually turn out worse than Me itself, I must say one thing that has never changed is the fact that there is never enough hardware or software to support a new operating system until at least a year after its release.

Such was the issue with Windows XP, which I believe today is Microsoft's greatest invention. I was in Job Corps when XP came out, and a few office machines were upgraded. Although it was more attractive at first glance than previous OSs, I was still satisfied with Windows 98 and 2000. Before and after Vista's release, I was one of the many people who said "XP is good enough." And I still feel that way.

Back when my family joined the PC crowd, the reason was that Apple computers had their parts soldered into place, meaning you would have to buy a whole new machine if you wanted to upgrade. I am one of those people who always used to joke that anyone who switches to Apple (Mac) is computer illiterate. Since my younger sister is studying to become an architect, and is consequently stuck with a Mac, I have changed that to "computer illiterate or in immediate need for high-end graphics."

With my XP Pro machine in front of me, with more than satisfactory graphics of its own, and running like a champ as always thanks to decent security software, I still hold that the most powerful and versatile operating system in existance bears Microsoft's name. There is a reason why Microsoft commands the market, and that's the plain and simple fact that their operating systems have always offered more functionality than anyone elses. Vista may turn out to be an exception, but even if it does, show me an OS that does more than XP!

The only other major argument from Mac users (and Linux/Unix/BSD users) is that Windows operating systems are more vulnerable to attack. The reason for this is not incompetence on the part of the manufacturer; the fact is that hackers and other malicious people will fish in the pond that has the most fish. And while one may argue that Linux is more complex than Windows, likely because they were using Windows before they switched, I see inexperience in their argument as well, as Windows can still be defended from attackers.

You're on the winning side, methinks. Before you spend your money in a way you will be likely to regret, I suggest you revert to XP and wait a couple more years.

Vista

by fcarld - 3/17/07 2:46 PM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I am afraid to download Vista even if it is free! I feel that IE is running with XP, pretty well; but I have no confidence that it won't crash tomorrow; getting something new is just asking for trouble!

by rharley5652 - 3/17/07 5:53 PM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I believe that the vendors (Dell and all other vendors ) should be to blame for not getting on the Vista bandwagon sooner to make their products Vista compatible? Case in point ,...just got my Dell XPS 410 Vista Home Premium,.. 2gig this,.. 2gig that,..Itel Dual-Core whatever!!! Guess what??? Can't use my DELL all-in-one printer A940 becaase DELL has no drive to work with Vista,..now is that Microsofts problem. Had another driver compatible issue with sonic solutions DLA,..called DELL,..they had no driver for this,..well!!! DELLS sulution to this ,...take contol of your computer and delete the programs,..problem solved,..yea right,..and again microsofts to blame??? It's a big scam !!! Look at any weekly news flyer,..Best Buy ,..Circuit City ,..Dell,..Gateway,.. they all try to sell you the latest,..greatest with Windows Vista !!! What they don't tell you is there machines are not compatible with Vista !! Remember the old saying,..buyer beware!!! C.C.RIDER

VISTA DRIVERS

by keckbigpapa - 3/17/07 6:33 PM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

ALWAYS IN THE PAST, THE NEW WINDOWS VERSIONS WERE BACKWARD COMPATABLE, I FEEL THIS IS JUST ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO FORCE OWNERS OF NEW COMPUTERS TO BEND TO MR. GATES WILL. I PERSONALLY HAVE THREE COMPUTERS, ALL RUNNING XP AND WHEN THEY QUIT, I WILL GO TO MACS. I WILL NEVER GET ANOTHER COMPUTER SYSTEM WITH A GATES PRODUCT ON IT.

Why is the tail wagging the dog?

by TreknologyNet - 3/17/07 6:45 PM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

When I purchased a processor chip to discover a "Works with Windows" logo on it, I finally realized that MS had become one huge plot. Is it wrong of me to think that the chip comes first and the OS comes second?

Certainly in the early days of the PC, there were many strange variants of hardware that failed to run the 'standard' implementation of DOS, but these days when everything is manufactured from virtually the same blueprint, the OS should work on any 'compliant' hardware.

Microsoft Vista

by Grungysquash - 3/17/07 8:14 PM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I have not run Vista final, but have run all the pre release software, including beta 2 RC1, Pre RC2 & RC2. I have found vista to be fine but also a bit of a hardware hog.

While I have no grudge I believe Vista will be MS's undoing, there are to many software compatibility issues regardless of if MS is at fault or not. They have a closed software loop, which means they and only they know the structure of XP & Vista. They would have know all these issues prior to release, clearly they have decided to get the OS onto the market. Already Dell has gone back to a two option OS choice. I can see no reason for myself to upgrade, based on the pre-release versions there was already significant software conflicts.

Personally I know of no known major user of XP, converting over to Vista, and outside of the bitlock HDD security (which is only available on the most expensive versions) I don't see the need. Yes it looks pretty but looks can be deceiving

Vista versus MAC = Laural Versus Hardy

by WarHippy1% - 3/18/07 7:22 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

Remember the terms, "Backward Compatible" and "IBM Compatible"? That's all changed now, todays list of compatible software vendors that are able to interface their software with Vista would have to be found on the "Who's in Bed With Microsoft This Month" list in the bathroom of Microsoft. Did ya ever notice that every third party that pairs up with the Ignorance Giant has hardware that not only works with Windows operating systems, but has ****** little processes working in the background, either force-feeding updates "silently" in the background, or uploading things that they don't have permission to take. Pretty sick price to pay to be compatible, you need to lower your values down to their level to be accepted in the Laboratory of Pomposity that Microsoft has become. I remember when XP was released, I beta tested it and couldn't use my HP printer til AFTER the release because HP couldn't update their drivers til Microsoft marketed the OS. Now, with HP Servers coming loaded with Microsofts server programs pre-installed and the two of them obviously twisting each others knobs, I'd bet HP hardware works great with Vista, whereas the booted trollup called, "Panda Antivirus" probably won't even load (just my opinion). But, switch to a MAC???? I did that, after getting so disgusted with XP and Server 2003 and their lack of support. I did one of their firmware updates in November, it killed my $3000 Macbook Pro, their trouble forum has many many posts of similar results from November onward til the present. The firmware update is STILL advertised and available to download. To me, thats like saying, "Oh, you haven't gotten screwed yet, here's a necessary firmware patch, try your luck". Their only fix is to drop your computer off and let them replace the Logic Board. And afterwards, people are posting about the noticeable slowdown of their computer after the update. What ISN'T Apple telling its customers about their computers. See, shoddy craftmanship is just as bad as shoddy operating system design. I wish Commodore was still around.....

Drivers

by drbecuz - 3/18/07 7:34 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

Whose fault? I am not a Microsoft fan but unfortunately I am required to use their products. It is easy to blame Microsoft for everything. However, Microsoft has given everyone plenty of time to modify their software and dirvers. The main problem is that most companies have taken short cuts in getting their products to market. They don't always follow the Windows standards. Instead they do what is necessary to get the drivers to work with their product and they hope that there are a minimal number of issues so that they don't have to update their drivers and software.

Continue to blame Microsoft all you want but the bottom line is Microsoft is not going to modify the 3rd party drivers for you. Contact HP if you are not happy that there are no drivers for a Laserjet 1020 printer. Contact your retailer and find out why they are selling equipment that is not compatibile with Vista but quit complaining about Microsoft because they are an easy target.

Blame Is in the eye of the beholder

by crazytrkr - 3/18/07 9:04 AM In reply to: Drivers by drbecuz

I got my new Laptop with Vista About a month ago. I didnt have any prob. with geting drivers from HP. My cell phone is another thing. When I called them they told me they didnt get anything from MS to work with until Vista was released to Everyone. Also in Vista I cann't use files and programs form XP. Money and works data base in mind. Money out right tells you it cann't open files from a older ver. and has totaly locke me out until I can remove all of it and reinstall. Data Base looks ok at first but when I go back to it half the info is missing. When I try to print anything out it tells me there is a prob. and has to shut down not printing anything. When I tried to build a new program in data base and enter a formula its the same thing, Shut down. So now I have to reinstall it and if I want any of the older data Iam going to have to retype everything into it. So Ya I lay Most of the blame with Microsoft. The least they could have done was make it compatable with their own programs.

It was a chore but from what sense I *could* make from your post, I came up with the following:

I would practically *guarantee* that there is a new version of Works and/or Money which would be Vista compatible. If you're coming here posting about incompatibility between Vista and your copy of Works 2001 or some other such nonsense, you're wasting everyone's time. MS aren't going to release the OS without having a version of currently available software - their *own* software - ready to run on it. I say currently available because before now, I wasn't even aware that Works and Money were still available; the last mention of either of those was when I was doing Pavilion support back in 2002.

Although I agree with the meaning of your response you do need to tone it down a little. It's a violation of forum policies to "name call" and to "put down" ANY poster. Continue and we will have no recourse but to start deleting your posts.

Thank You,

and life goes on...
