Gentlemen, Ladies,
Have we not all learned our lessons yet? Never, ever, ever load a new Microsoft OS on a PC until after the first and sometimes the second service pack is released. Microsoft is very happy to have all the beta platforms still helping them find the backwards incompatability issues and just plain errors in code.
As George Santayana said along time ago, but still true today, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”
I will wait until at least the first service pack is released and then maybe just think about a new Microsoft OS (upgrade maybe a bridge to far).

One can always count on Mr Koo to come up as a true defender of Microsoft, no matter what, no matter who, he will always rise up to the situation.
Of course it is up to Microsoft. At least when they upgraded from 3.1 to W95 or to W98 there was some concern about making the system able to "talk" with parts designed for previous systems.
This message applies to most of your e-mailed reports, not only to the Vista message.
Your constant negative headlines are a huge turn off.
My suggestion to report objectively by stating specific abilities and inabilities in a comparison chart rubric of all closely similar products, did happen, but not nearly enough.
This easy lazy negativity is not helpful or fair to anyone.
Your reports in your letters are incomplete and therefore give wrong impressions. This negativity combined with incomplete information does harm. Do MORE good comparitive reporting and market research with adequate numbers instead of a handfull, and less product evaluation before the products have been on the market.
You folks are doing things the easy fast way. The result is apparent. Do a good job. Take pride in your products.
Heya SyeveoONE, It appears like you are giving us permission to voice an opinion AS LONG as it agrees with yours. I DO believe in freedom of expression, as well as all the other freedoms we experience, and I really take offence at you presuming to be OUR watchdog on ANY matter.
It sounds like photoham missed out on the XP upgrade, as he talks about Windows ME problems (?), and doesn't mention all the issues when XP was first introduced. I have had them all - Win 3, 3.1, 95, 98, ME, and XP. In every instance I waited until the update release (now referred to as SP2) in order to calm down my PC's frustrations with a new O/S.
It doesn't matter what version you have or how new (or not) your PC is: In my experience it is always best to wait for SP2 releases. This gives Microsoft a chance to iron out the "undiscovered" bugs that are always going to be present in new product releases (it don't matter whose - there are always bugs!) and also gets other software manufacturers an opportunity to "tweak" their software to better mesh with the new O/S.
I remember when XP came out - I bought a new PC and got it with Windows ME, but purchased an upgrade pack to XP when it was released. I had to install it when I finally got the disks - and what a FIASCO that was! So I removed XP, reinstalled ME, and waited - and SP2 was released. I did a full install of XP, then installed SP2, and then reinstalled my software (and I still had some minor incompatibility issues) - and it worked GREAT! Now my PC runs smooth, with few problems. I even turned off my system restore! (yes, it's a gamble, but one that has worked for me (so far!!!))
I am sure it will be the same with Vista - SP2 will be out within the next 4-6 months, and when installed, alot of the glitches and bugs will disapear. After all, Microsoft can't predict what everyone's PC will be like, cause we are all different! Once we let them know the problems and issues we are having, the better they will be able to tweak Vista, and cure alot of the issues out there.
So, be patient! Wait for SP2. For those buying new machines, do your best - SP2 will soon come to the rescue!
Put Vista Business on the machine and it just sings. Am2 4200+ with 2gb DD2-800 and it works fine. No problems with applications that I can't easily patch up in the registry. Not being an Apple user, this is the first time I've had an OS that effectively uses the memory modules, huge improvement.
What junk Microsoft has been selling up till now...too bad any and all of use with mutual funds owns a piece of the company and would be hurt if Microsoft finally got decent competition.
The software you mentioned, AOL security, virus protection, and ATT Security Suite wouldn't even be necessary with a Mac. And because Macs' hardware is controlled by Apple, you certainly wouldn't have any of the hardware problems you mentioned. I'm willing to bet your transition to a Mac would be smoother than your transition to Vista. Macs will run Windows XP (or a more expensive version of Vista) through virtualization with Parallel's Desktop or natively through Boot Camp. Windows XP should be all that is necessary to run any old Windows software you haven't found a Mac-compatible replacement for. Macs' advantages are numerous, and I'm sure you're aware of them - easier to use, excellent iLife software, virus/spyware-free, highly reliable, and many handy features- ones Windows doesn't have or just poorly copied. Though the current version of OS X, Tiger, compares favorably with Vista, Apple is planning a new version of OS X called Leopard that ought to blow Vista away. Apple is characteristically secret about its features, but if you go to the Apple website, you can preview the features Apple has chosen to disclose. I would postpone any buying decision until later this spring when Leopard is released. Though I can't comment too much on the nature of your incompatibilities with Vista, the case to switch to a Mac has been there for years, and it's good you're considering it now. I have no reason to promote Macs, except that many of Microsoft's business practices bother me. I'm only a high schooler, and a couple years ago, I researched the topic and found that a Mac would serve me better, and it would serve anyone but gamers better. Good luck with problems.
I think that both parties are at fault here they knew that vista was coming out an that ppl would be upgrading to it, they should have already had the software ready for vista in place. an MS should have stated that not all 3rd party software programs are able to use there new OS system.
personally I wouldn't be upgrading as fast as some ppl have, there no point in going thur these problems, till they work it all out.

Welcome to the New OS by MicroSoft
I think that MS must pay attention to de millons of people who pay lots of money, and then obtain funny (not so funny)and unintelligible notes of error, incompatibilities, etc. Is possible that MS don't have enough budget to make thing better? New OS and the same story:wait for one o two year after it work properly. Can't blame third party vendors: why they must depend in the convenience of MS? If you want to know what is monopoly, you have the answer. Julio R. from Argentina.
I spent 59.00 dollars to microsoft tech help just so I could vent my anger with software issues. There is no answer to my questions.I was never told that vista was no even close to prime time. I would have never bought vista if microsoft had told my about the software problems. call me sucker. reformatting hard drive and going back to xp. stick with xp or you will be sorry.
Most, if not all hardware made today still works with Windows XP. The hardware vendors are complete idiots. Take for example 2 cases in which I've seen (as an I.T. Solutions Provider) DELL sell Vista systems with hardware driver errors already popping up for hardware installed in the PC! That's just DUMB/DELL, same thing. In both cases, I advised my client to allow us to install XP on their systems and to allow us to build all of their systems for them in the future. I installed XP on those DELL PC's and built them 2 additional PC's, and now they are very happy with all four PC's. By the way, Dell had the XP drivers on their site. I made sure of it first. Even if they didn't, it may have been possible to find the manufacturers' drivers online, since Dell no more makes the components inside their PC's than I do.
It doesn't matter whose fault it is. I cannot afford nor can I most likely track down the vendors that make most of the programs that I use on Microsoft's OS. I understand that companies, be it Microsoft or Ford make new products. I know that the carburetor from my 1965 Ford will not work on my 2007 Ford, but I don't have to buy a 2007 Ford. With Microsoft, as I understand it, I will have to eventually use Vista, if not fine. But if I do, the all my programs should work. I know that some of my analogies are not on target, but if Microsoft forces me to use Vista by not supporting XP then they should make sure I can use all my programs that I bought. I have said in other posts that I have been a Microsoft fan since 1984 and I have never had any major problems, actually, I have had almost NO problems. So if this Vista OS cost me a lot of money, then Microsoft is wrong.

Hi ![]()
Just because i had a major system meltdown, i built a new computer and also put Vista on it. I had some minor problems too, ATI's latest driver doesn't really do what it should, my very old scanner wouldn't work and the USB-WiFi doesn't either. So what? Just be patient, new drivers WILL come for sure when Vista goes a little more mainstream.
There are problems as of yet still with various video codecs (specially DivX), blame it on THEM not to come up with updates even tough Vista has been around for a year for tests and driver coding. For the very common "COM Surrogate" error this causes there are a number of workarounds, all of which work perfectly. Just key your error message into Google and there you go.
No anti-virus? Do you live behind the moon? Get AVAST free edition, not only is it free but it works just about perfect on Vista.
Kind regards.....
your Thanh
I have not yet tried Windows Vista, but from what I have heard about it so far, I will not be upgrading anytime soon. As far as compatability goes, I think that it the job of Microsoft to make sure that software and hardware are compatible. When upgrading, you also have to ask yourself, is the operating system really worth buying a whole new computer? In my opinion, Microsoft needs to build OS's that are conveinent to the end-user, not the other way around.
First of all, VISTA is beautiful. I don't know if it's more beautiful than the MAC OS, but it's gorgeous, and it works perfectly without crashing. If you do something stupid, the Restore function works way better and faster than it ever did on XP. I've kind of had it with the crappy complaints about Vista. Microsoft is responsible for what it ships, and for making that available to others in time for them to get off their duffs and make their systems integrate. If they want to ignore the manufacturer of 95% of the OS shipped, they can take the market consequences.
Some things work much better with Vista than I imagined. PALM is one of those. Aside from having to use a workaround for the recent daylight savings time change mandated by Congress(I downloaded the patch on an XP computer, synched to that, and then synched the handheld to the Vista computer), it's perfect. My wife's blackberry can't even use its DST patch on an XP computer because of Verizon problems. So hats off to PALM. Quicken was fine, until I switched to Quicken 2007 and started getting zeroes for investment values, but that happens on XP as well and is an Intuit problem. We cannot go on blaming Microsoft for everything.
I think HP deserves a particular kick in the pants. I have MANY HP all-in-one fax/printer/scanners, and none of them work with Vista, in the sense of having the "HP Solution Center" come up on the screen. They have simple patches to make most functions work, but none of them allow you to fax from a program, or bring up the control screen. Sheer laziness or incompetence on HP's part. Even worse, I decided I could afford to buy a new "Certified for Vista" HP printer, opened the box and found inside a note saying -- SURPRISE!!-- this won't work with Vista, check our website. My contempt for HP knows no bounds. Stop using Microsoft as the whipping boy.
