I mean seriously

by meisinscotland - 3/15/07 6:36 PM In reply to: I say... by meisinscotland

Seriously though, I spend a lot of time in my Windows 95 Virtual Machine, just, admiring the OS! The simplicity of it, the fact that the explorer is just so slim, and fast! Its more dynamic, OSes of today are just full of bloat... and yea, we have thrown quality out of the window and now its about quantity!! Its like there is a competition to see how many DLL we can have!

I mean seriously, I tweaked a Windows 95OSR2 installation, with tips from Nathan Lineback, and removed IE3, got the installation footprint down to 47MB. FORTY SEVEN MEG! Thats like, 20 times smaller than Windows 2000? and almost double that again for a standard image of XP???? I mean come on...

MS fault, OS should be a standard

by balonga - 3/15/07 8:17 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

It is MS fault . A pretended OS should be a standard common basis where everybody can freely place applications.
MS dictatorship imposing their own personal likes and convenience had been lot more bad than good to computer use, science and applications.
Some great firms are faulty too since they make alliance at some time with MS to get advantage of this facts although nowadays some may be suffering victims of they own medicine.
Once again, another motive to stop MS extortion.

Mostly good experience with Vista

by gwdougherty - 3/15/07 8:24 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I upgraded to Vista at the end of January. So far, all of my peripherals and my software have worked easily, with possibly a little tweaking--the lone exception is Ahead Nero; on their website, they trumpet the fact that their software is compatible with Vista, but, guess what, it does not work, even with their update. Guess that's the main software I will need to purchase to work with Vista, which is not too bad.

The Consumers are to Blame

by racet - 3/15/07 8:25 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

Microsoft, and all the software, hardware vendors out there are not the ones to be blamed, it's US for giving into all the hype and pressure to "upgrade" to Windows Vista.
I have not seen, nor heard of any convincing arguments that would persuade me to change from Windows XP ( which is working just fine thank you ) , to Windows Vista. I mean what is all the fuss about? Do we REALLY NEED another O.S.? Everybody has finally gotten used to the different XP'S available, so now we all have to change again?
I guess old Gates is bored, and we like dumb sheep are just gonna go along with Him?
I for one am not going to change my O.S. again just to be currently, technically cool!
With all the troubles I have been hearing about with Vista, switching over sounds like a stupid idea. Maybe some day in the future, if all the reports coming in are mostly positive, I'll consider "upgrading" to Vista, but for now, I don't see any need for it at all.

Responsibility of a Monopoly

by pilkstoy2 - 3/15/07 8:28 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

Part of the responsibility of a monopoly is too look out for your customers, and with Vista Microsoft has failed this responsibility. Microsoft views third party apps as competition and has not put the needs of customers first. They have the ability to design wrappers for drivers but they have not because this is not for their advantage. With revenue of $46B they can only offer excuses. Mars Pathfinder Mission with the little rover robot, rockets and all, coast under $150 million.

No.

by meisinscotland - 3/15/07 6:40 PM In reply to: Responsibility of a Monopoly by pilkstoy2

Look at it logically. I think they HAVE thought of customers. Integrating products such as AntiVirus into their OS, yea, sure, it crushes the third party, but at the same time it saves customers a lot of bother.

It sounds really harsh, but its tough luck to the third party! I would LOVE to see the day when I can set up Windows and not have to worry about security apps! And think of all these people NOW who dont run with security! Problem solved, cos its all there. Now THAT IS thinking about customers, no?

Am I missing something here...

by DoomBoyJr - 3/15/07 8:29 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

Wasn't there a Vista Upgrade Utility release long before Vista was released to the public in January that chacked your software and hardware for issues? I know I ran it on my old Dell 8300 and knew what software had to go, what hardware was going to have problems long before I upgraded? Everyone is right, Microsoft is not responsible for what HP or Linksys or any 3rd party vendor does with their driver and firmware upgrades. I purchased a Maxtor SATA 200 GB hard drive that was detected but would work in Vista, I don't blame MicroSoft for that, I blame Maxtor for conveniently being gobbled up by SeaGate and not providing support for their drive because all it would need is a firmware upgrade. This guys sounds like a MAC lover to begin with...I could have all the problems in the world with my PC and never go the way of a MAC...I love my choices in software and game on PC's.

Anyhow, just as a reminder to anyone thinking about upgrading and curious about their hardware and software...go to microsoft's website and look for the Vista Upgrade Advisor, download it - install it...and find what you are going to have problems with before you make the jump. I love Vista...I am about to upgrade to a Duo-Core CPU and new graphics just for Vista. Good luck to everyone.

we can't all afford the newest

by achooster - 3/15/07 8:29 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

A lot of the problem seems that it's related to needing the newest and greatest hardware. Plain and simple, by a great margin, most of us will be using things a few years old. And operating system needs to be able to work with what's been common for a while not, not just expect all of us can run out and buy the newest. There's really no reason there still couldn't be an option to run on previous drivers, the same as setting earlier windows to run things as previous versions also. Latest greatest, fine, but MS needs to remember that isn't what the majority of us can do. That hsa been the hallmark of Windows, that it didn't abandon all the previous users. But Vista seems to have forgotten a lot of what made it so common.

everyone just relax

by andream041 - 3/15/07 8:30 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

So Vista is buggy . . . everyone knew it would be. Isn't it common knowledge that it takes time for new operating systems to work perfectly, with all software and hardware? After all, Vista does require much more memory/CPU speed, etc., than did the equivalent upgrade to XP from ME, or 95, or whatever. And, a two-second google search will be able to tell you all the pros and cons of Vista. Hopefully before someone buys an expensive new computer, they will do a bit of research first and see if Vista is something they'd want- people should at least try to be a wise user and not necessarily trust the guy at Best Buy (I mean, if they were crazy good computer guys, they wouldn't be working there). And you can always custom-make a computer on the net and get XP instead.
And I personally like the Aero interface although it eats my RAM up like a RAM monster hungry for RAM.

I totally agree! I only started using XP comfortably at the beginning of this year! Doubt I will be on Vista until at least 2010, for many reasons.

Microsoft not compatible with Microsoft

by essell - 3/15/07 8:31 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I think the argument is mute when you consider that Microsoft has repeatedly put out new operating systems that were incompatible were their own legacy products. I have several MS products that were originally designed for Windows 95 that did not work on XP. I fully expect the same with VISTA and I refuse to DOWNGRADE to it. It is only an upgrade if it is an improvement. If I have hundreds of dollars of hardware whose drivers were made specifically for XP, then losing the operability of that hardware would definitely be a DOWNGRADE.

BINGO -- very correct. :-)

by eldernorm - 3/15/07 12:15 PM In reply to: Microsoft not compatible with Microsoft by essell

I agree and that is really why old drivers do not work. They changed things "inside" Vista so they are different from XP.

Just a thought, if your going to change and all new PCs (standard store models) are VISTA, you should really consider Mac. You can still run Windows XP and all your old software and you get a free computer system to boot, Mac OS X 4.9. Super stable, great software free (iLife series). And, I am using a number of older pieces of hardware (2-3 years old and 5 OS levels and guess what, they just work. )

Just a thought. :-)

Both Are To Blame, But Microsoft Is More To Blame

by burgh girl - 3/15/07 8:32 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I blame both Microsoft and the third party software companies, though Microsoft is definitely more to blame - it's their product that came AFTER the software, so they should have went above and beyond for the customers/clients to make it would be compatible - period. Microsoft could have at least informed or warned buyers that a lot of their programs they rely on WON'T WORK and gave them a choice. The problems I have had since buying a brand new, expensive computer, with the all-mighty, great Vista, that was suppose to be a step above, isn't. I am not a computer geek, most people are not, though I believe they are probably more frustrated than us non-geeks, because they must feel just as helpless. Better, yeah right, guess what computer I have been using since I bought my state-of-the-art expensive computer - yep, my teenage daughters cheap Apple computer that I bought off Ebay for $225, as opposed to my $2,000 laptop that I can't use half the time - that is crazy. I will take some of the responsibility for being computer illiterate, but hey, I can use the cheap computer just fine and that proves that more expensive and newer, isn't always better. I'm sure I will like the new computer once everyone is on board and my programs work, which could be a year from now, when my newest is obsolete and it will be time to purchase another newer computer, with the best OS program and yet untitled bugs to work out. Maybe, just maybe, I've learned my lesson, but I can bet Microsoft hasn't - people will still buy it and all will be forgiven and forgotten when the next big one comes out, until then - the tables have turned and I am now the one begging my teenage daughter to use her computer, though I won't be on myspace, though I could since it works on her computer, but NOT mine. So you can say my teenage daughter is proof that the Vista program bites (in it's current state) because she won't even use my computer with Vista on it, not with it's great graphics and music capabilites - nope, to quote her, "your new computer is retarded and doesn't work". Maybe I'll do a search on Ebay and find another Mac, but it won't be from my computer, half the time it blocks my searches.

Vista ? Why?

by blue51557 - 3/15/07 8:41 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I cannot get over how people will go out and buy a product because of what they perceive as a pretty package. There were volumes written about Vista and it's compatability problems, DRM, etc., etc., months before it was released; and still, millions went out and plopped down what would amount to up to half of the value of their computer (CPU unit that is), and buy a product that is defective at best, and a total sham at worst.
Would you buy a car that could not run on half of the gasoline sold in the service stations nationwide? Would you buy a car that would gleefully report your speed and location to every police unit in the nation, every time it thought you did something illegal, just before it shut down?
I work for a company that is considered to be the largest and most powerful company in the world. (Think Light Bulbs). Do you know that they are still running Windows 2000nt? There was no compelling reason to switch to XP and the security issues were ridiculous, so they stayed with 2000 worldwide. I use it every day of my life, and it works, and guess what? I could not care less about aero-smearo and all the stupid bells and whistles, and 'big brother is watching' features of an operating system that is broken before it is taken out of the box.
If you want to compute, use your computer; if you want to watch a movie, use your TV; if you want to talk to your friends, get a phone; if you want to play games, get a life.

I agreed with most of that except the last few lines

by meisinscotland - 3/16/07 11:12 AM In reply to: Vista ? Why? by blue51557

It is true that an OS is a tool to get the job done and is not an accessory, but, some people (like me, mister!) like to play games on the computer or use chat, or internet. I think it was a bit nasty of you to attribute gaming to people who need to "get a life" and suchlike.

Yes, Windows 2000 is a very good system and if thats all your company needs then thats fine, but there is no need to upset everyone else! :p
