Only we are to blame for perpetuating the mess...

by DNaples - 3/15/07 1:57 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

First, as long as the masses flock to the latest releases like moths to flame, MS will continue to spew garbage at initial release. How can you fully beta-test such a huge OS AND debug it under their overly optimistic release schedule. So as long as we keep egging them on, we are getting what we deserve.

Second, I'm not switching to Vista until I "have to." I bought a new laptop after Christmas, and a new desktop 6 months ago. I now have 6 machines total at home and my office, and for the first time, they are all running the same OS (XP sp2). I am NOT about to muck it all up with a new and patently buggy Vista.

Third, I don't need to do anything that utilizes 2+ Gb of RAM, and am not even 1/2 way to filling 3+ Tb of total HDD space. I greatly appreciate and will patronize the vendors who will have parts to keep my machines running for the next 2 years, because I don't need the "latest and greatest," and am unwilling to pay for it out of my wallet or patience.

Finally, MS is no longer the only game in town. I don't know if my next OS will be by MS... Which is a first for me - I probably still have install disk sets for MS Dos 5.x and Windows 3.x, and I also remember OS2, and how it was better. Now that the various Linux distros are more widespread, and MAC can run Windows software, there will be more and better options by the time I "have" to do anything...

Microsoft always does what pleses them - no complaints!

by rgirwin - 3/15/07 1:58 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

MS is well known for its monopolistic behavior. It can decide - and impose us- whatever OS it decides at any moment.

It is also famous for the low quality of many of its products and the silent war against most of third party SW.

No surprise they managed once again to make the Vista incompatible with as much third party SW as possible. Their hidden intention is to remain the only suppliers of any SW and Internet related services in the planet.

I hope they do not succeed!.

windows vista bugs

by ronswor - 3/15/07 2:02 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

its all well and good blaming microsoft for the problems of software incompatability after all have the software manufacturers not had 5 years to get their products ready as well.

Five years? More like a half

by Frodo420024 - 3/15/07 2:24 AM In reply to: windows vista bugs by ronswor

There was absolutely not five years for the vendors to get their products compatible. It was more like ½-1 year for most, depending on their affinity with MS.

And lots of small outfits who just make neat stuff simply didn't have the resources, in time of men and money, to make the investment. While MS and the big shots in the industry have money to burn, lots of small vendors don't. And it's exactly the small ones that MS doesn't care much about, as they're short on money and influence anyway.

My take is that Linux will benefit in a quiet and steady way from this release. Linux has no similar 'Big Bang' releases to disrupt everything, the source is readily available, and its modular design makes it easier to identify and fix any problems that show up. Application compatibility problems at this scale simply cannot happen on Linux, for a variety of reasons.

NO! They have NOT!!!

M$ Vista has NEVER been ready until RTM, even then it still has to pass the "buyers" tests and this will take AT LEAST 12 months!!

No vendor in their right mind would contemplate creating ANY new driver until the last minute because of M$ last minute FIXES!

Windows Vista vs. The World

by vgerat - 3/15/07 2:15 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

For years Microsoft have tried to dominate the world of pc's and to a certain degree have been extremely successful. With that in mind, shouldn't a company with all that power be obliged to all those pc's to make their OS compatible with every hardware vendor in existence. The OS is made available to hardware and software vendors before the official release so there really shouldn't be any problems. Okay, so maybe Microsoft can't really be held primarily responsible for everyone's problems but since the OS requires a lot more of a pc's resources one can only assume it has built in backward compatibility for just about all hardware and/or software drivers available.

Just remember, this is 2007. We are now in a world where just about everybody knows everything. Isn't it time we all grew up (especially companies). It's now a very small world and all those companies have an obligation to everyone they serve to be honest and provide their customers with the respect they all deserve. Microsoft is no exception. They above all should provide everyone with everything they need to continue in their daily lives. A new operating system that has that much of an impact on the world (maybe not straight away but in a year or 2), should have provisions for everything and be compatible with everything (even if some third party vendors have trouble catching up). Is Microsoft at fault ?. Partly. It's a 2 way street.

Microsoft Windows Vista, it's here and here to stay. One way or another most of us are going to end up using it. Microsoft is responsible for everything it's OS does and if third parties are involved they are also responsible.

The debate will continue....indefinitely.

EU law

by PJTEnterprises - 3/15/07 2:29 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

Under European Law, a vendor is responsible for ensuring that a product is suitable for any use the purchaser might reasonably be expected to wish to make of that product. This means the product must be suitable for anything mentions he wants to use it for AND anything the vendor might be reasonably expected to anticipate he might use it for.

Microsoft might get away with arguing that a new PC with Vista on it might not operate earlier software but if they assessed your system online and concluded that it would work with Vista if you upgraded, they could have a hard time explaining why they said it was compatible with your existing system as any reasonable person would expect the machine to have existing software on it.

It would, however, be whoever you bought the upgrade from that would be responsible for putting things right.

I ordered a "free" upgrade over a month ago ("Free" turned out to mean £15 or so) and am still awaiting its delivery.

Vista not cooping with third party software

by Arie A - 3/15/07 2:32 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

As Microsoft is the lead party in Operating Systems they should be responsible for not cooping with third party software! Simply because they make themselves the one and only in this market and we have to pay for it!

This seem happening with their Office 2007: some of my archive software did not match and I was almost unable to remove this Office 2007 Beta program.

That's why Microsoft have to take third parties into their policy; if not, again, we pay the price and make Bill more richer as he already is!!

So, for the time being I stick with XP PRO and Office 2003 and are preparing for another OS and Office program. For now I'm trying out Ashampoo Office 2006 and so far I'm not dissatisfacted!

And what about Windows Live Care? Full of bugs already! Thanks, but no thanks!

M$ is 100% To Blame...

by amy.licious - 3/15/07 2:35 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

Vista's their worst stinker since ME. Nothing works with it. Not even Microsoft software lol. It should've never been released in such an unpolished state. But they rushed it to market for reasons that still baffle me - I mean, doesn't M$ want people to use it? Users from small home and home office people to small business people to the bigtime enterprise people are united in frustration that it doesn't work. It's an operating system that doesn't operate. I just don't get their thinking. It's like they're forcing people to (A) stick with XP SP2 and await XP SP3 that's promised; or (B) overwrite their old Windows system to Linux Ubuntu or buy a new Apple OS X; or (C) accept Vista's severe limitations and joyously pay for them. We trialled Ultimate on a test machine at home and about the only thing that actually worked on it - ironically - was Kaspersky's brilliant Internet Security Suite which is built to protect you from Microsoft software! Go figger lol.

It's not perfect, but it's not MS' fault.

by invisible21 - 3/15/07 2:38 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I apologize in advance if this has been written before...I just wanted to put in my $.02 without reading the almost 500 responses in the thread. Let me preface this by saying I must be incredibly lucky, because I built a new rig with a lot of newer components and I've had no driver issues whatsoever. Everything worked at an acceptable level with default drivers, and even better once I hit all the manufacturers websites for the most up to date drivers. As I'm sure somebody has mentioned before me, Microsoft opened public betas for vista over a year before its official release...and there were earlier builds available before that. I know vista has changed over the course of the betas, but its base code hasn't...they've just added/removed 'convenience' features. So, if hardware/software vendors have had access to the vista(longhorn) kernel for over a year, why don't any of their products work? And why should Microsoft wait even longer to release a product that's ready for market just because vendors won't get their act together?

I'm not saying that Vista is perfect...but in my opinion it is definitely an aesthetic and functional improvement over XP. For anybody who thinks switching to a Mac will solve their problems...have you tried finding 3rd party hardware for a Mac? I know there is more out there now than in the past...but the number of choices pales in comparison to those available for the PC. Even if Vista has some compatibility issues now, its install base will undoubtedly continue to increase. As that happens, the software/hardware manufacturers will have no choice but to invest the resources necessary to make their products compatible.

One last note...even if vista tells you there's a compatibility issue, many times this is untrue. The warning just comes up so the software manufacturer can cover their butts because their software hasn't been thoroughly tested in vista.

maybe Both are to blame.

by ex_navyus - 3/15/07 2:56 AM In reply to: Windows Vista Bugs by photoham

I think that the issues with Vista are definatly not all Microsofts issue. I agree that the vendors have to take responsibility for their part. I work at a university in the IT department and the new Vista will not work with our wireless client that we use because the vendor has not come out with new program. I guess my question is if the new OS is not out how will the companies be able to make patches? maybe I am niave to the facts of how this works. But It seems that Both have a responsibility to to make a product that every will be able to implement with minimum issues.
