WOW ... Look who is criticizing Microsoft ... What a shock ... Please spare me ... I have been using Lotus Notes for 3 years now and talk about sux ... Make that SUX !!! ... If Vista is that bad, what, or should I say where is Warp??? Arrrggghh ....
I also gave up my StinkPad for a Dell long ago.
Oh, and I am using Vista full time. Love it ... Am still pissed other software vendors have not stepped up with compatible driver and software support on time.
Hi
This is nothing new. Every time a new version of windows comes out, there are problems with third party hardware. When I moved to XP I had to change my (perfectly working) scanner and my printer as the companies said they would not be making XP drivers for these products. This problem has nothing to do with Microsoft but the peripherals makers. This time I am going to make sure that all my peripherals will work with Vista before moving over.

I've long been an advocate for Microsoft but this time they seem to have "dropped the ball" with Vista......Especially when they are already in the process of producing the next OS and they say that they will only "service" Vista for the next five years excluding corporate editions.....It's about time Microsoft woke up to the fact that the computer users are a bit more "savvy" today then they were in the past.
I first started using Microsoft when Windows 95 was new. After many crashes I Then I upgraded tp Win 98, and later to Windows 98 SE which was a signifcant improvement. Then I upgraded to Windows ME which was a nightmare!! None of the 3rd party software drivers were available until later. Then Widows XP became available and had all the drivers that were needed. Now Microsoft has finally released Vista which apparently already has many software, hardware problems. (See Windows ME) After many years of using inferior Microsoft products I have decided to switch over to Apple the next time I buy a computer. Enough is a enough already. Jerry Denney, CA
Every os has issues at first! Microsoft does have an unfair stranglehold
on us,but it's the biggest game in town. Switching to another os is fine but because of the initial bugs is short sighted. We all knew this was going to be like this (or should have anyways).Have Xp,learning Ubuntu, and purchasing Vista when it's smart to do so.
Yes, Microsoft is responsible for Vista's shortcomings. Yes, third party vendors are responsible for releasing drivers IF they want hardware to be compatible with Windows. A few things to keep in mind...third party vendors don't usually have the resources that Microsoft has, so every time MS releases a new OS they have to spend quite a bit of time and money to come up with the new software. Also, there is the time vendors have between getting a beta copy from MS so they know what to change, and the actual release date for the new OS. I'm sure that when MS sends them the beta they begin working on upgrades, but it's still just a beta, so whatever changes MS makes before the OS is released they need to adjust accordingly (if it's a major change they may need to scrap what they've done and start over). I'd heard that MS pushed up the Vista release because of resource issues...and now it's becoming a nightmare for some. Maybe before the next OS comes out they should plan a little better (and consider the myriad of third-party vendors out there)...by giving vendors more time to develop upgrades, MS has more time to debug. In the end there will be a smoother transition for everyone, and consumers will be much happier.

Ya know, people need to make up their minds! Now you are going to complain because Microsoft isn't controlling third party software? Three weeks ago everyone was touting the "Microsoft Monopoly!!"
How the heck do you expect MS to create drivers for all your third-party software and hardware without getting sued again? Last time they tried to incorporate third-party software with their OS package they got slapped in the face and fined. (Close to half a million if I remember correctly.)
You can't have it all people, either Microsoft has a Monopoly so they shouldn't be allowed to control other stuff, or they don't and they can create drivers and hardware specific for their OS (and charge you for it.) PICK ONE!
Just my two cents.
"How the heck do you expect MS to create drivers for all your third-party software and hardware without getting sued again? Last time they tried to incorporate third-party software with their OS package they got slapped in the face and fined. (Close to half a million if I remember correctly.)"
No one is expecting M$ to create drivers. The drivers already exist for XP. WHY can't they be used!!!! M$ is changing the RULES yet AGAIN and FORCING the third party vendors to fix what should be NONE existant problems!!
If a third party vendor changes their hardware, they don't turn around to M$ and say "Hey my hardware is different, fix YOUR os to work with MY hardware"!! M$ COMPELS third party vendor to tow the line, then after towing the line, M$ breaks THAT line and hands them a new one!!!!!!!
A half million dollars to Microsoft is not even a drop in the bucket. It’s not even high humidity. A couple of years ago, it was estimated that his net worth was 80 BILLION DOLLARS! I've read recent reports that he's only worth $50-56 billion today after an estimated net worth of $100 billion in 1999 before the dot-com bust. But nobody really knows -- the ruler has run off the page. It's not bad being the undisputed richest man in the world and not too shabby for a guy who dropped out of college (Harvard, no less). At least he has three honorary doctorates now. But to be fair, the Bill & Melinda Gates charitable foundation has a $33 million dollar endowment coming mostly from the Gates and Warren Buffett who just promised to donate $1 ½ billion EVERY year to try to match Bill's generosity. Good luck – Buffett is only the second richest man in the world!
What MS did a couple of years ago, actually for decades, was to engage in dozens of unfair and illegal business practices, e.g., "vaporware" or falsely projecting blatantly false early release dates to stymy and drive out any competitors who could not compete with these phantom early releases, stealing software code wholesale and putting out their own software versions that had been reverse-engineered, copyright and patent infringements, punishing retailers who did not offer MS operating systems EXCLUSIVELY in their stores by forcing them to pay exorbitant prices for greatly limited OEM versions of MS software or by blacklisting them by not supplying ANY software or hardware, intentionally writing source code and restricting access to it so that software and hardware vendors could not make their products compatible with Microsoft's operating systems, etc., etc. It's 2:00 a.m. and I've only listed a very few things that MS has done that the Justice Department found to be violations of the Sherman Act regulating monopolies.
But you should be aware that Microsoft had painfully negotiated with overwhelmed Deputy Attorney Generals until a compromise was reached whereby Microsoft would pay a fine in the low billions. But the A.G. that those deputies were suffering under was appointed by Clinton. When Bush appointed one of his loyal men as A.G., the new A.G. unilaterally threw out the settlement and reduced it by something like 99% when Microsoft had their pen in hand writing a check. What a watershed for MS! After years of smoke and mirrors, MS and Gates must have thought they died and went to heaven!
What I and many others here are suggesting is that no one would object to MS HELPING software and hardware vendors make the changes necessary to function under MS's operating systems. But MS has in the past tried to take over and control any vendor they could bully without being noticed by the rank and file computer users. Hurt me once and shame on you. Hurt me twice and shame on me. These vendors have long memories of letting MS into their gates like the Trojan Horse of ancient Greece. MS tried to co-opt them, not help them. When no one is looking, MS is a wolf in lamb's clothing. Being a lamb, I'm afraid ... very afraid! I'm even a bit paranoid about venting now.
It is obvious to all Vista is not the quality producr hoped for. No one is forcing us to buy it, lets keep our money until Microsoft & the hardware & software vendors have produced the code to support us.
WE are the CUSTOMERS, the basic idea is our demands are supplied. We stop buying this rubbish then they simply HAVE to provide the fixes.
You wouldn't pay for a full tank of gas unless that was what you got. Why is software different.
They are abusing us and it has to stop NOW!
You think the cost for Vista is bad now? Try insisting that Microsoft test each and every piece of hardware on the market for compatibility. There are literally thousands (if not tens of thousands) of possible combinations...requiring the OS manufacturer to test all those combinations would be asinine and would lengthen the development process infinitely, as new hardware is constantly being reduced.
Ultimately, it's the hardware manufacturer who is responsible for creation and testing of the drivers and it always has been. They're the most familiar with the intricasies of their hardware, what it's supposed to do, and how to make it work. That said, it's also the USER'S responsibility to do some research prior to making the decision to make an OS upgrade. Check the Hardware Compatibility List that Microsoft provides. Go to each of the vendor's sites for your hardware and find out whether they've got drivers for the new OS for your hardware. If they don't or they say that they don't plan to release drivers for the new OS, only you can decide whether that piece of hardware is sufficiently important to delay or completely forego installation of that new OS.
Why people have gone out and purchased an OS knowing full well, that it has so many problems, makes me wonder what the human I/Q has fallen to.
Like the previous post mentioned, you wouldn't normally purchase anything knowing it's in-complete or sub-standard, so why have these folk gone and purchased any form of Vista!?
If you want to be in the first bunch of sheep, don't whine when you get mint sauce sprinkled on you.
software without the proper drivers (microsoft)
and hardware, without the proper drivers for that piece of Operating System (Vista), is also useless.
And there you are, erverytime when somebody is coming up with a new OS, these problems show up, this a natural and mogic process.
So be patient, and watch the birdies (wait till your hardware have all the new drivers) or just wait when Microsoft have them.
so it ain't no use to get angry or yell at MS or me, it's a fact of life.
Don't be angry, you got my sympathy, I know it is all too expensive, the OS, the new hardware etc.
Just relax and be happy...(and use your old OS instead).
I believe VISTA is still in testing phase. We know that a lot of people use Windows as their OS and of course they expect that VISTA will offer them better solutions, less crashes(huh?), more security (perhaps) - but they still hope! Now, do I really have to upgrade to VISTA? MS say yes - well, they have invested time and money over VISTA - now its pay off time - is it? Did they tell you - you might have problems with other software? Programmers are trying to expand their usability of their software, not only for Windows - so I guess - is their time to make MS follow them, to make VISTA more compatible for their software. This was Windows VISTA OS vs. Software. BUT can my PC support VISTA? You got 3 options: 1) stay with your Windows version; 2) upgrade your PC (cost yous some money) and think to upgrade to VISTA; 3) Upgrade your PC or BUY A NEW ONE with VISTA installed and start pulling your hair off the head for software incompatibility with VISTA.
Now what am I going to do?
I'll opt for 2 - till the hardware upgrade, as for the VISTA - Hasta La Vista Baby!
This is a subject which makes me fume! Every issue of Windows has been subjected to various bugs in the system at the onset, all of which have taken time to resolve. People are paying good money for these systems and Microsoft have the market. There is such a thing as Duty of Care which Microsoft cannot evade. They have a Duty of Care to their customers to ensure that the product they produce for sale is without fault; this to me, includes bugs! Yes, the responsibility of this problem lays firmly in the lap of Microsoft and it is up to them to ensure that these issues are resolved as quickly as possible. Should they be unable to provide this reasonable facility, they should consider refunding a large part of the cost to the individuals concerned, for they are in effect selling an imperfect product!
