Software tjat DOES work

by indy2001 - 3/14/07 6:25 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My HP Pavilion m7790y came with Vista Home Premium on it. I have been able to install the following:
>> Adobe Acrobat 5.05
>> Adobe PageMaker 7.0
>> Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
>> Advanced WindowsCare V2 Pro
>> Design Science MathType 5.0
>> MS Office 2003
>> MS Flight Simulator X
>> Norton Internet Security 2007
>> QuickTime 7

The preceding list is over and above the software that came with the machine -- IE 7, muvee AutoProducer 5.0, Roxio Creator v9 and myDVD Basic v9, Adobe Reader 7 (and now 8), and MS Works.

The only software that I have not successfully installed yet is Adobe Illustrator 8.0, but I'm not done yet. My trusty 6-year-old XP-based machine just lost one of its 2 hard drives. Until the other one fails, however, I'm going to keep using it for my other software and not try to migrate it yet. Hopefully, when that machine finally passes on to the next computer dimension, Microsoft and all the assorted vendors will have figured out how to make more of existing software work on Vista!

Driver compatability almost nill

by sarahraek - 3/14/07 6:27 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I Installed Vista Home Premium several weeks ago and have not expereinced to many problems with driver compatability. My Epson RX700 still is running ok on XP drivers, the only issue I have is I'm unable to determine ink levels for my printer. As for compatablity with programs I ran under XP, there are none so far......Not sure what all the naysayers are talking about when they bash Vista.

Only about 30% of the drivers work from my peripherals now

by merdrr - 3/14/07 6:51 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It is taxing to now realize that all of my devices do not work as they are designed to now that I have Vista.
I have a Logitech wireless mouse & keyboard. Of course they function, but the extra features (i.e. home keys, sound controls, etc..) do not all work. My external DVD +-R/RW, DL CD +-R/RW had some programs to edit your photos etc, that are not compatible with Vista. Vista upgrade basically knocked out the Computer Associates computer protection that I originally had on my computer (which was easier to control & set which parts to block, without 'holding up' what I am currently doing everytime something new happens that Vista doesn't like). Vista won't allow me to reinstall it and I still have use of it until 2009 :{ The worst part is the lack of use of my Brother all-in-one. All of the drivers did not install, and only the printer works. Brother's site says that they have updated drivers to download for the scanner (which came with a sweet program (Paper Port) that would scan your documents so quickly & beautifully - the scans were better than the originals - btw it is not compatible). I have downloaded the last 3 new drivers, and the scanner STILL does not work. Maybe Vista should have advertised that your peripherals need to be checked for Vista updated drivers BEFORE you install this OS, or buy a computer that you plan to use with existing ones.

I enjoy the challenge of the figuring out what makes a computer run, but all of the downloading & troubleshooting that I have had to do with the Vista install - Microsoft should give me a discount on the price of their engineer track classes, or just give me credit towards the course credit for having my computer run (at all) inspite of these hurdles.

XP is fine just now, thanks

by rfriendship - 3/14/07 6:57 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I ran the Vista check some time ago and it reported that my old UW SCSI 2940 card was incompatible (expected) as was my DR3020 Canon scanner and Mustek USB A3 scanner, along with some old but favourite software, Micrografx.
Frankly I'm not bothered with Vista just now. I can create what I need with what I've got and I'm fed up with the never-ending requirement to upgrade. Stuff it!
Regards to all,

Bob F

Most software operates fine

by gerryh423 - 3/14/07 7:05 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Only IncrediMail was really incompatible and it would even run enough to allow access to old e-mails. The new Windows Mail works well enough that I don't even miss it. I've had some problems with Adobe Photoshop Bridge occasionally crashing but it doesn't affect the OS and reopens without a problem.

Compatability with Vista

by patterjp - 3/14/07 7:16 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I bought full version of Vista Home Premium and tempo installed on separate partition as dual-boot with XP Pro. My PCI NIC not support, nor will it be-Linksys LNE100TX-CA Version 5.1(only Version 5.2 and drivers not yet ready). My HP 6200C scanner not support not will it be according to HP. My Dell 2405 FPW LCD monitor stuck at 1024 x 480 and looks like Dell will not offer any Vista drivers for it. At least my Canon i9900 printer works. Not impressed. Will hold off until at least SP1 is out and better driver support, if ever for my older hardware. I will build a newer system once the dust settles, but definitely will keep XP Pro as primary OS. Also, it sure was a hastle removing Vista after testing completed.

No incompatibilities

by jbutt_mcse - 3/14/07 7:26 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have upgraded my laptop to Vista and have found no incompatibilities. My desktop is a little lacking and so will require an upgrade before it is fully capable. There are some things I like and others I dislike about Vista, but on the whole I'm happy with the OS.

Much of what I'm reading reminds me of the huge leap we made in 1995 with the Introduction of Windows 95. I was working for a government office then and did lots of "House calls" on weekends and evenings. Windows 95 was the 1st truly multimedia OS and the countless hours I spent trying to get people's 20.00 sound cards working, even though I had recommended a Sound Blaster. It is the responsibility of the 3rd party manufacturer and the end user to emsure that their apps and hardware will work, not Microsoft's. It only becomes Microsoft's problem when they give a piece of hardware the Vista certification or place it in the WHQL.

Picture this scenario. You own a diesel Jetta, you pull into a major oil company's service station however this location does not sell diesel. Is that VW's fault?

If you have bought Vista preloaded on a new computer and the apps that come preloaded are not Vista compatible then yes you do have the right to be ticked off and I woud probably begoing back to the vendor and requesting a refund or exchange for a different machine.

Having said that, before the Mac Addicts give me grief about how wonderful Mac's are. When Apple opens its specs up to the general manufacturers and allows real competition in the marketplace on hardware and has to support a zillion combinations of vendors then they can compare Mac's to Windows machines. Yes I've used Macs for some tasks and yes they are nice, (BTW I've used Linux for some things too and it is also quite nice) I'm just not prepared to go that route at the moment.

Yes, it is Microsoft's fault

by Hugmup - 3/14/07 8:41 PM In reply to: No incompatibilities by jbutt_mcse

Microsoft has an extensive network of hardware and software partners who receive marketing and technical assistance from Microsoft. They brag about how it makes them flexible and allows them to address markets they could not go into themselves. I know because I am the partner adminsitrator for one of my employers. Microsoft has tentacles into nearly every hardware manufacturer and ISV there is.

The fault lies with Microsoft. They didn't do a good enough job selling their partners, and they did not put enough incentives into the program. They also can't say "hello" in 50,000 words or less, so perhaps no one could figure out what they were saying.

I was a Vista beta tester. Any bug that wasn't an absolute deal-breaker was not fixed. When they went RTM they even had to send out an email to everyone to stop filing bugs. Vista RTM is really beta 4. When a person argues that it is not Microsoft's fault, they are making a tacit assumption that Vista is ready for market. It isn't.

One could argue the other way. I don't care. It makes no practical difference to me whether Microsoft is at fault or not, because Vista still doesn't work. Microsoft gave me Vista Ultimate for free, but after two months I had to revert to XP to get anything done. Thank goodness for Norton Ghost!

Quite a lot of the time, I spend more time fixing Windows than using it, so two years ago I decided I needed a backup computer with duplicate applications. I didn't want two Windows machines, because, well, what's the fun in that? I tried Linux, but it didn't work out. So I bought an iMac and got a lemon. That's when I discovered Apple's customer service. Apple's groupies get on my nerves, but I'm not going to deprive myself of a good product just because it has obnoxious groupies.

What has Vista done for me? Before Vista, the Dell was my main machine and the iMac was the backup. After Vista, the iMac is my main machine and the Dell is... well, still there.

Most applications work fine..but

by bluuxx - 3/14/07 7:57 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I use Adobe CS (full suite), Office 2003 (full suite), Nero 7, GroupMail, System Mechanic 7, Cute FTP Pro and HTML Pro, Dragon Naturally Speaking 9, Nuance products and other stuff. When I upgraded from XP Pro to Vista Home Premium, there was very little trouble, although I did have to go to some manufacturers' sites to get new drivers. My 2 major problems are with HP Photosmart 3210xi network connection and with Nvidia 7300 GT. For HP, I have to use USB connection and "built-in" Vista driver (with some loss in functionality). HP says the right driver will be coming sooner or later. The Nvidia drivers provided so far lack full functionality. New drivers here are "coming soon" also. All-in-all, seems everyone is doing a pretty good job. None of my stuff has proven unusable.

My Lexmark 7170 Printer

by xyz99xyz - 3/14/07 8:15 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I cannot print anything with my Lexmark Printer and when I first contacted the company they said that it was not compatible and that's all they said. When I checked their site again they were developing a driver and said it would be ready in March, 2007. Still no driver or compatibility.

20-30%

Turtle Beach Montego DDL sound card. They still don't have a driver and admitted they didn't start developing a driver until a month after MS released final version to general public. I have been running Vista Betas for a year with no sound from this new Vista capable sound card. Finaly got going by using a new driver from sound chip maker, not card maker.

Same problem with EVGA e-GeForce FX 5500 video card but now running generic driver from video chip maker, not card maker.

Also not all functions of new Double layer DVD recorder work as new driver still not available from Lite-on.

Harmony remote firmware driver not yet ready and Vista lowers video resolution because of Aero incompatability with old driver.

These all all problems not caused by Microsoft as hardware makers had plenty of time and information to develop drivers and firmware for their products.

Software anbd hardware incompatiblities

by DavidDillow - 3/14/07 8:29 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Here's what doesn't run since I upgraded to Vista Ultimate:

1. The scanning function on my HP OfficeJet 5610. HP's response: No drivers yet. Use Microsoft Paint to scan for now.
2. AccountLogon software that keeps track of ALL my ID's and passwords for me.
3. iDatebook and iPhonebook for Verizon wireless users.
4. Multi-Flash All-in-One card reader. No drivers.
5. ReadNotify plug-ins.
6. Some functions of Incredimail.
7. Had to unistall and re-install Norton Internet Security 2007 and Quickbooks Pro 2007 for them to run.
8. Some ********* of Musicmatch Jukebox ver 10.
9. Sonic DVD. No drivers

These are the ones I know of at this time. But, needless to say I haven't launched every app on my computer yet. These are just the ones I found in the last seven days since I upgraded.

So far very little

by lostinlodos - 3/14/07 8:51 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

So far, aside from Microsoft software the only old programs I have that run under Vista are the ones that had Vista-ready updates/patches released. The only unchanged software programs I use that have not had a problem were
AVG Anti-Spyware
AVG Antivirus
ratDVD
Babylon Translation
Snood Solitaire
ISOBuster

Everything else I've updated/patched, or I'm waiting on patches. At the least only half my hardware partly works, part of the time; and none of it is more than a few months old.

Vista also rejected my X-Fi sound card's spatial sound software. So I have a nice 7.1 system with only 5.1 sound support under Vista. Great Microsoft. Thanks for killing my theatre experience. Not that it really matters at this point since my DVD software doesn't work yet and I don't like Windows Media Player. I'm glad I kept XP and Linux on the system as well. If I was one of the unlucky ones who flat out upgraded and wiped out the old software, I'd be totally lost.

Windows vista

by suyamburajan - 3/14/07 9:21 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It seems quite odd to blame microsoft alone for all that's going on. Everyone has the responsibility including the hardware and software manufacturers to make their products updated with the present environment. I think the issue will come to an end at once the manufacturers start working to make their products vista compatible. There are thousands of hw and sw emerging now. Its not possible for microsoft to track down everything and make their os compatible of them. Instead hw and sw manufacturers make their products compatible of standard os. Even they have to update them. I am running vista based lap which works very fine. without any hardware dispute. Everyone knows vista has a bundle of inbuilt drivers for standard devices.

What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista

by knight2448 - 3/14/07 9:56 PM In reply to: What percentage of sw or hw are incompatiblities with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I only have two hardware devices not yet compatible. Actually my video card is but the tv tuner is not and ATI has not provided a definite date of when the software would be available.

LEXMARK has not given any specific date as to when drivers will be available for my x7170 all in one printer.
