Just because Microsoft or even Apple decides to promulgate a new operating system, they should not take the attitude: "To hell with our present users, we don't have to make our OS backwards compatible."
Well there are a lot of us out here with considerable investment in software and hardware that don't like to have to throw it all away every time one of the OS makers comes up with a new idea.
I think it is incumbent on both hardware, software, and OS designers to keep the past in mind when they come out with new products. We cannot keep discarding equipment and software every couple of years because of newer systems.
Also, many of us have been using computers for many years and have data from all that time stored in memory. It is STEALING to force us to spend the money to upgrade perfectly good software and spend time to upgrade our old files because the old information isn't compatible with some newer system.
The equipment makers are just as guilty. When my old printer gave up the ghost last year, I had to spend a lot of time and several hundred dollars to get new software and update the old information into the newest system. If the printer company would have spent a little time to write a driver for the older system, I could have printed the information directly when I had to.
I think they take their philosiphy from the oil companies: "Let's see just how much money we can force the public to give us!"
Rather than make this longer than necessary, Microsoft should take the responsibility for making their OS backward compliant and compatible.
Software Piracy notwithstanding, Microsoft has given themeselves their own license to print money. Everything in Vista is Ala-carte.
Stick with XP until it dies, or Microsift cleans up their act.
Every time there is a new O.S. released there is the usual accompanying
howls of discontent and frustration over the fact that programs that used to work on the previous(current) O.S. no longer work on the latest release.
I am amazed at the number of people that "have to have" the latest O.S. regardless of the outcome. Microsoft's marketing campaign and "Vista" hype has just made another "squillion" dollars for the company. Hey their operating system works, they didn't guarantee that everything else would. If you have everything running smoothly without crashes, lockups, with the inevitable wasted time and frustration factor why change for the sake of change. Sit back for a year or so, wait for the (again)inevitable update packages, bug fixes, service packs or whatever until the majority of the bugs are ironed out. I run
2 desktops and a laptop (one desktop with linux)and the others with XP
Everything I have loaded works!
I guess the only question you need to ask yourself is do I need VISTA or do I just want it for the sake of having a new O.S.
When XP was first released many people said that XP stood for eXtra Patience required.
The wheel has turned full circle again. Perhaps in a year or two I may
think about changing to Vista. There's that old saying "If it isn't broken, it doesn't need fixing"
Totally agree with u. Thats why, I am sticking to XP for now. Honestly, I couldn't care less about AERO experience. It will probably distract me from productive computing ![]()
My company has issued a statement that they are going to take many months to adapt our software to Vista. It isn't a bug in Vista, it isn't an issue with our software. To expect that all the software on the planet is going to work with every new OS is fantasy. But, I certainly think that Microsoft has a responsibility to work with other software vendors to help them adapt their software. It is a simple issue, if they want the world to upgrade to Vista then they need to work with others on compatibility issues. If they don't then they can expect to have everyone stay with XP until something else comes along.
This isn't a one-off problem with Vista. It's the same experience we've had with MS over and over again. First they explain that they have to take years past their expected launch date for Vista because they have to insure backwards compatibility. Then its launched, it's not backward compatible with many applications, and MS says "who me?, it's not my fault, go talk to the software maker." Please, give me a break, what other industry would we accept such arrogant responses that treats its customers with such utter disdain. I've already made the decision to move to a Mac with my next PC purchase. Apple's far from perfect, but it treats its customers better than this. MS is past its peak. No one thought AT&T could ever fail. MS may be 10 to 15 years away, but its on its way down and we're well into seeing the start of the decline.
I have no objection to Microsoft developing a new operating system. What I object to is that they are forcing it on the public by way of the manufacturers. Try buying a new computer without Vista. I spent an hour on the phone with Dell, who would not sell me a laptop with XP. I gave up and bought a Gateway because they will send it with XP.
People need an option for a while. No wonder everyone hates Microsoft.
adh
Dell does offer builds with no OS as an option.
Tell it like it is!
microsoft wants to continaully pass the buck!
This new system has been bareed from use by oue oWn government1
That tells you just how lousey it really is!
Microsoft has continually blamed everyone else for it's problems , and they are suppossed to be the biggest and the best?
vista stinks!
We all know it , and Yes it was in developement for a long time !
so why all the holes/
Why is it just little more than a "security patch" for WIN XP?
Stop making excuses and justifications for Microsoft!
You are all starting to sound like the crooks from inside the beltway is Washington!
Absolutely! Programsversus Hardware as usual.
Every OS that MS had published in the last 20+ years has pushed the envelop as far as hardware and programs are concerned. Growing pains are difficult to deal with. The computer has evolved and developed in many ways and to think that everything we have had from years ago will continue to work in a new pc indefinitly is absurd. Its progress! Yes its financially taxing since we must pony up for new devices and apps, but, that's the way of all things computer.
I wish my car could run on ethanol 85 fuel, but it does not. Should I blame the Mfg for that? No. If I want to use that fuel I must buy a vehicle that Runs on It. Yes I've been a PC addict since the early DOS days and before. I probably have spent over $20,000 on various systems, parts and yes, operating systems from Microsoft. Linux and Mac pundits aside, it is still the most popular OS and has the most Apps written for it.

Now everyone knows what it is like to have Linux or a Unix Operating system. For example "SUSE" or "Redhat" wonderful Operating Systems but you can not get common games or programs to run on the Operating system. Microsoft Vista made my computer worthless as a game machine. Vista should step up and at least have an uninstall or a double boot mode. ARGH the best thing that has happened is I got to slow down and smell the roses. You know open a book or do something educational.
It seems to me that third party vendors have much to gain by dragging their feet. Maybe the lure of additional software sales was too strong.
Microsoft certainly can take at least part of the blame. For example, I upgraded to Vista Ultimate, 64-bit, and then found to my dismay that Microsoft's own OneCare was not supported in the 64-bit version. To their credit, I was warned that 64 bit computing isn't as fully supported as 32 bit, but, come on--if Microsoft themselves can't support the 64-bit version, they should call it a Beta. When Windows 95 came out, they jumped to 32 bit computing all the way. In the next step up, they're trickling.
You hit the nail on the head. I have been using Windows since it was first introduced and have worked in the industry for all of that time. You are CORRECT in that there ia a large accountability to the OEM producers of video cards, printers, other accessories, etc. that I see little or minimal effort in being compatible. MSFT gives them advanced warning of many, many months and then when the product is out they are not compatible? Go figure. On the other hand I too have seen situations whereby the changes at the last minute before RTM by MSFT catches these suppliers off guard.
