Cash Grab. Pure and simple. We all know that Vista is bloatware. Granted, that it's one of the best OS's to come out of Microsoft in a long long time, but the resources it requires to operate is horrendous. Maybe this is a way of Microsoft giving back to the little guy. Making the users spend money to upgrade hardware and software that isn't compatible or if the user doesn't want to wait for compatible drivers and updates.
Just something else to think about.
if you use Mac , you are somebody, you are going places, you are part of computing jet-set.
Hell's bells ... you can even one day become like Paris Hilton... all you have to do is to use Mac ... ![]()
it just makes you a better man (than your PC neighbour) ...
hahahahehehehohoho...etc.
mac is fluff and ribbons, pretty colours and virtually nil support.
i have upgraded to vista home premium and have had zero problems with it. i find it superior to xp in that it is streamlined and when i installed it found drivers for all but my sound card which is an old sblive 24 bit.i found a driver for it and also updated to the latest nvidia driver .nvidia are working on full drivers for vista and so some aspects of the xp drivers( digital scaling for instance) are not included yet but are in development for future driver release.
the whole upgrade ran far more smoothly than when i upgraded from 2000 to xp.
Anytime you upgrade, there will be problems. That is why I just bought a new Vista Premium computer. I would not recommend anyone upgrade to Vista on an XP machine. If your XP machine is running fine then stick with it. There is no good reason to go with Vista. Mine was in bad shape & I needed a new computer. What I have found is that Avast Anti-virus, McAfee Site Advisor, cCleaner, & Adaware SE, all work perfectly in Vista. My H.P. 3500 scanner did not work until yesterday when H.P. released a new driver. My H.P. 7660 Printer software did not install correctly but works perfectly in spite of the software error message. Both my Kodak cameras work perfectly. I find Vista to be superior to XP, but not worth buying a new computer. Upgrading would be out of the question, as too many problems will arise. Keep your XP computer as long as Microsoft is supporting it. Need a new computer then Vista is all you will have to choose from unless you switch to Mac or Linux.
I just would like to offer this point: you jumped too soon into murky waters. Are you sure that you couldn't have found out about the AOL, ATT, etc. incompatibility? The stories about AV incompatibility have been pretty open, and such are not a new story -- this also happened with 2000, XP, etc.
I think you are a good candidate for the Mac experience, or a PC pre-loaded with Vista. Doing what you are trying to do is an exercise for someone who follows technology closely, say an IT pro, or at least a dedicated hobbyist. If you didn't download drivers for your video card and have them ready, well ...
It would be interesting to hear what CD-ROM drive even NEEDED drivers. And drivers for a USB hub?? Maybe it should have been deleted before the upgrade then re-inserted.
At least a DVD ROM is required for Vista.
It's our fault, for letting them get away with it. and for being OS beta testers, for a product that should not have been put anywhere near the public. For Months
And you know what the best part is? That we have paid a lot of money for the privolidge of doing it....
The man reported he needed a driver for a CD-ROM drive. Many computers have both DVD and CD-ROM drives.
So who's laughing about what?
How many of us have learned from our past experiences with MS that we should not jump into anything new from them. Almost all new OS have flaws, granted what seems to be happening is beyond the pale but maybe the next time if fewer users make the move a more compatible, friendly OS will come out the first time. So many of us want the latest, newest, flashiest that we seem to put our common sense in a closet. Good luck to all the Vista users out there. I'll just wait until I see next to Zero moans about it before I make the move.

I think it is completely rediculus to come out with an operating system that is not backward compatible with existing software. The last thing that I want to do is search for all of the updates to all of the software that I own! What a crock, Microsoft!! From what I've heard, why would I upgrade to Vista until I absolutely have to? Also, my one year old laptop probably can't even run the higher end versions of Vista, which also ticks me off. Apple is looking mighty good!
The comment I am replying to is a good example of the consumer mentality that drives Microsoft to release what some folks consider "insecure bloatware." The amount of software engineering to make Vista as compatible as it is probably will result in the first serious security flaw that is found.
The newer security models alone require patching old software. It is impossible to create an operating system that anticipates all independent software vendors programming quirks and secuirty errors.
My laptop that I bought less than a year ago probs wouldnt run any flavor of Vista at all! :P
But I am happy my XP atm, with all my apps and my wee virtual machines!
Only upgrade to Vista if you really need to I guess.. ![]()
Sure, MS is a big company with plenty of resources, but there should still be a limit to customer expectations. I think MS did a rather good job of covering a lot of territory as far as compatibility goes. It would be unrealistic to expect any business to make sure their stuff works with *everyone* else's.
McDonalds doesn't make tacos....should they?
Yes, while in actuality Microsoft is only responsible for their OPS, they should allow third parties ALL the necessary technical info regarding the linkage to and the needed interfacing underlying communication to the OPS without hiding anything. Microsoft does not always divulge the necessary info to allow development of compatible third party software (unless they really like the product, in which case they usually end up purchasing the product because they did not think of if first and do not want the competition....
I am staying away from VISTA until the code all settles!!!
...hatred of Microsoft by every vendor who has ever dealt with them. Why? Because they have brow-beaten, harangued, threatened and looked down their noses at every vendor they have ever dealt with.
And now, like the limping water buffalo that they have become, the vendor-lions can smell weakness.
But, the reasons for no drivers and program compatibilities is even more simple than hatred: The vendors, upon seeing what MSFT was going to introduce to the marketplace, saw no "dent" in their pocketbooks coming; no reason to expect even modest sales of Vista...that they just decided not to act. Pure and simple.
It's always money, folks and MSFT failed to "show me the money" if I'm a vendor.
We are all witnessing, real-time, the self-immolation of Microsoft. This will be the beginning of the end for them and...no one will be weeping. No one!
