Let me see ...

by trialmanager - 3/5/07 3:00 AM In reply to: how many antivirus programs can we have on one computer with by rodwen58

1. An old and preinstalled Symantec NT Antivirus client, which I got from my previous employer. It runs a real time virus scan, based on the Norton antivirus 7.5.

2. Windows Live One Care in a trial period. Accordidng to ... "them", it has a real time shield both for virus and spyware ... but I'm not sure about the later.

3. Avast! antivirus, also running a scan in real mode (WLOC hates it and states it can't work properly with Avast! installed, requesting a desinstallation - ... you whished ...).

4. AVG Antivirus also running a scan in real mode.

5. CounterSpy, in trial period, running the active protection

6. SpyBlaster (whell, I'm not sure if this thing is really doing any job).

7. Advanced Windows Care V2 Pro, a pseudo-givewawy that was suposed to be free but never updated the database (let me tell you that I would not rely on this for antispyware scanning, as it takes only some seconds and only goes through the register)

8. AVG AntiSpyware in a trial period.

9. The Sypbot Teatimer.

I also run deep scans with

1. Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition
2. Spyware Terminator
3. Spybot
4. from the former list, all except nr. 6
5. SuperSpyware (the free version do not have a realtime shield/scan).

What's next? Well, Nod32 and some firewalls I've been collecting info on.

By the way, these run on a XP Pro + 1024 Ram system.

Are we Paranoid?

It is not that you can not run more than one realtime antivirus, but you shouldn't and will often cause all kinds of conflicts. I have on many occasions, installed AVG antivirus on top of Norton that was damaged, had expired, lost password or would not uninstall.

I don't know why you would want to have all this installed and running and I am glad that you don't seem to have any problems, but I would never recomend this senario.

Well ...

I know this is awkward but if everything doesn't slowdown, the more you have, the better. Moreover, there are still features not available in the free software. By evaluating it, I know i'll make a better decision when I'll have to opt for a product. And easy comes, easy goes. I unistalled some moments ago the Advanced WindowsCare Pro. The giveaway turned out to be a scam without database updates. In the near future the CounterSpy trial will reach the limit. After that, goes the WLOC. Then, I'll load others.

The key feature of the new software is they find again old trojans and keylogers that remained in te recyclers and in the restore references.

While my system keeps its agility and stability, I'll keep testing it with whatever new is developed. I do have a junk PC with which a test first the software, by charging against the cracking code community - these are really mean guys. I do have friends who test antivirus against their emule and kazoo overnight delivery. After this testing, we learnt there isn't a restfull security software alone.

So, the more and better you can have and the more your system can load, the better.

OK

by waytron - 3/5/07 8:53 AM In reply to: Well ... by trialmanager

I am glad this works for you, but keep in mind that every time you install and uninstall a program, it usually leaves something behind. So unless you are setting a system restore point before each install and then performing a system restore, you are slowly corupting your Windows Installation.

This is why you often have to download special removal tools from companies like Norton, because uninstall did not work 100%.

Good Luck!

Stand Up To DEF CON 3!

I'am not of the opinion that more was an answer nor and perhaps even more so I have never ascribed to the concept of speed being as such such as it were a desired goal. The cost that those attributes require is that we are compelled to comply out of a position that is unsafe and even worse not complete. The cost that all this is is a terrible and unfair burden which has not provided for secured footing nor even comprehension, more and speed are contrary attributes to comprehension and a secured networked community. It is too much the speculation that this leads to which I find very much an objectionable conceit.

... Total Unninstall ...

by trialmanager - 3/8/07 7:17 AM In reply to: OK by waytron

... maybe this one is better for managing uninstalls.
By the way, if your systems can take a bit more, try this: Sandboxie, at
www.sandboxie.com. Tricky, but effective.
