Beware of HP

by tdsmith - 3/2/07 7:15 PM In reply to: Is my Software Vista Ready? by waytron

HP is now selling their products with a notation that they run in WinVista. But this a lie. Go check on a 7410 All-in-One and it will show that it supports Win Vista. BUT if you already own the 7410 and would like a WinVista diver, you will get a note on the webpage that they do not have a WinVista driver at this time. Their printer will run off of the native drivers supplied by M/S but the many functions may or may not work depending on whether you use the Wireless approach (did not work) the Ethernet cable method (printer works - Scanning does not) or a USB cable 9Haven't tried yet).

What is more puzzeling is that M/S and H/P have purportedly been collaberating on these drivers for 2 years now. How come at release, these HP products are NOT Vista ready!!! How important do you feel as a customer now?

Mozilla FireFox 2.0.0.2

by tdsmith - 3/2/07 7:18 PM In reply to: Is my Software Vista Ready? by waytron

Recently updated to Firefox 2002 and it seems to run ok in WinVista. I have not experienced any real issues with it yet.

But IE is a royal pain.

I do have a problem with Firefox 2.0.0.2 and Vista

by Tainanjohn - 3/3/07 3:31 AM In reply to: Mozilla FireFox 2.0.0.2 by tdsmith

While I can get stereo sound from websites (eg BBC radio) using IE this does not seem to work with Firefox - using either Realplayer or WMP. I have a new computer based on Asus P5B motherboard (with 5.1 sound setup.). Everything worked fine on the old computer under XP.

More problems than Linux

by martinfam - 3/2/07 9:59 PM In reply to: Is my Software Vista Ready? by waytron

These sound like the sort of problems Linux is accused of (sometimes quite reasonably) and which Macs might have (don't really know about Macs because I don't use them).
The difference is, with Linux, there's a community out here dedicated to sharing their experiences, offering help and developing solutions.proper obsessed with helping.
With Linux though, you don't need to buy new software/hardware to stay on the migration treadmill. Since making the switch about two months ago, every day makes me realise I have wasted so much time and money on Windows with upgrades, maintenance, repairs, reloads, hacking my way through exactly the convoluted mazes that any OS presents when it goes haywire, etc.
I'm just glad I made the move before I was stung by the Vista Virus.

USB to Printer cable

by fsonline - 3/3/07 8:52 AM In reply to: Is my Software Vista Ready? by waytron

Dynex DX-UBPC USB To Parallel Converter.

Do a search on this cable. I use it to connect a big older HP Laserjet 4V printer to my computer as a second printer. It's been a life saver. This printer cost me a fortune "back when" and was sitting idle while I used a newer, cheaper laserjet for daily use.

Dynex's site is loaded with these kind of products.

Old LaserJet

by dsasser - 3/3/07 11:17 AM In reply to: Is my Software Vista Ready? by waytron

Surprisingly, I have had zero issues while using a parallel to USB cable/adapter. My LaserJet 5P installs more easily than any of my newer printers while using this adapter. I think they are readily available. So a Parallel to USB is most likely all you need. I haven't had any problems at all with Windows XP, Suse Linux, and the Vista Upgrade Advisor also showed no warnings. I would be very surprised if that trusty printer had any problems. I think I'll try it on my Apple PowerBook just to push my luck.

I cannot stress enough, that the Parallel to USB cable has worked like a charm.

Vista ready software reality check

by jcolegrove - 3/6/07 9:09 AM In reply to: Is my Software Vista Ready? by waytron

Good Post

I am responsible for the telecommunications infrastructure of a Fortune 500 company (24,000 users and 2000+ locations worldwide). We have a mix of Avaya Definity, Nortel Merian, and Cisco VOIP infrastructure. All three vendors only support client software up to WinXP SP2, and when I tried to load various client software on a test Vista machine in XP compatiple mode, it installed...but when I tried various functions in this software, KAPUT...in most cases it hung the app, in two cases it created a BSOD...thought that was a thing of the past...not. What I like most about Vista (Ultimate version) is its network and media tools...what I dislike most is its lack of backwards compatibility to software and hardware that runs fine on XP2...followed by the annoying pop up alerts about security and account management...kind of like a nagging wife that wants an alimony check...the best bet is to start with loading your most important apps, loading any drivers needed, run the Vista Advisor check, and perform a beta test with power users BEFORE Vista is even considered...better to know well in advance before the leap of faith is made. I will wait for Vista SP2 before serious consideration is given in an enterprise environment.

Good luck all

Installing Vista

by spoffs - 3/2/07 5:23 PM In reply to: Is my current software compatible with Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I brought a new bare bones Computer just to install Vista Ultimate so I had no Programs to worry about, the next step was to install the programs I use on my other Computers running XP so far I have had no troubles with the Big ones Photoshop, Dreamweaver,Illustrator Etc Etc, one interesting point I have noticed the new Computor has an AMD Semperon 3400+ and proccesor speed of 2 Gig and 1 Gig of Memory but the Programs run much faster than my 3 Gig computer, I will be putting another Gig of Memory and maybe another Graphics card, but at the moment I am happy with the setup, my opinion on Vista is what a pleasure to use, of course, as with every thing new you have to learn how to fully use it, but the fading screens are so so kind on your eyes no sharp transitions, and the 3D look, and gadgets panel, and I think I had better stop praising Vista, other wise you may think I work for MicroSoft. One last point before Vista was released I read an article from an "Expert reviewer" on the problems Vista would create i.e runs slow and program problems Etc Etc, I have not found any of these, and remember When Windows changed from 98 to XP there where programs that would not run on the change over either. So for all you out there that has not experenced Vista and are afraid to upgrade then my sugestion is buy a new hard drive to relace your excisting, and install Vista on that then if everything went pear shaped you can always return to you original Drive, to all the Vista Knockers out there try before you buy if your computer can not handle it then please don't blame the System, update your Computer as I said I run Vista Ultimate on a AMD Semperon 3400+ 1 Gig of Memory Inbuilt Video Card and a processor speed of 2 Gig now that is not an exactly High Spec Computer
