Not using Windows anymore

by JLP - 3/2/07 5:33 PM In reply to: Which Microsoft Windows version would you consider the worst by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm not using Windows anymore. A couple of years ago I've found about Linux (Mandrake, now Mandriva) and I liked it so much that I stayed. The main reason was that it offered what Microsoft was and is promising with every release, but don't deliver: safety and stability. I also liked it how much you can configure in the desktop so that it looks and works exactly as you want it to. Currently I'm running Kubuntu Linux with Beryl 3D desktop enabled and it looks a lot nicer and more advanced than Aero in Vista, and at the same time it is a lot faster. Later I also found out about other things that give even more value to Linux: source code is available and everyone has all the freedom to change it.
If I had to choose the worst Windows it would be Windows ME, this was some very buggy and very unstable system. And after my recent one week experience I would say Vista is not far behind Windows ME: slow, infested with restrictions like DRM, expensive and nothing very interesting for so much money. Looks like I will be staying with Linux for a long time to come.

ME BAD, hands down

by cburgher - 3/2/07 5:39 PM In reply to: Which Microsoft Windows version would you consider the worst by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I was "fortunate" enough to be one of the beta testers for ME. For each of the 4 beta CD's (including the Final Release Candidate), their support for network and graphics cards was extremely lacking. I dutifully installed each version, tested it, reviewed it (noting the lack of support), completed their surveys, got courteous email responses stating that the issues raised would be in the next or final version. They never lived up to their promise. I converted my desktop to Red Hat Linux and built my own server with RH Linux in 2001. When your OS software is so bad that it drives people to Red Hat Linux, you know you've got problems.

I'm equally pessimistic about Vista. What's the big deal? So many known security flaws, such a lack of driver support, why rush? Oh, besides the fact that Microsoft will stop supporting XP SP2 real soon.

Windows Millennium

by mario50 - 3/2/07 5:39 PM In reply to: Which Microsoft Windows version would you consider the worst by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I own windows Millennium in a Compaq lap top, the worst SO that mivrosoft could develop.
Windows Millennium was an experiment between Windows 98 and XP crashed very easily and was not reliable but microsoft as well as every times got back the money

It doesn't surprise me that...

by Zouch - 3/2/07 5:56 PM In reply to: Which Microsoft Windows version would you consider the worst by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

...Windows Me is running way ahead of everything else but I have to disagree. I've seen all the whinging about it, mostly from the USA, but I had a copy of Me (Win98x upgrade version) that was rock solid reliable. The same is true of a colleague (he had the Win95upgrade version and, yes, his and mine are different), so I have come to the conclusion that the UK versions are different in some way from the US ones. In my case, Win98 (version 1) was far worse than Me.

True, you do need more memory with Me (68 MB minimum rather than 32MB that will satisfy Win98SE) and it doesn't run particularly well on Toshibas (unless it is the Toshibe OEM version).

The only problem I had with Me was on the machine I used as an ICS server (white box Pentium I MMX) that had a memory leak and would slow down after about three days use.

As always, your mileage may vary.

Windows ME. The question is WHY???

by slyfox16 - 3/2/07 6:37 PM In reply to: It doesn't surprise me that... by Zouch

It was a waste of time and money to upgrade to WinME. It solved little and created yet another churn. Well, M$ TRIED to cause a churn. What they caused was a big ho-hum. Useless money spent. I was on MSDN at the time and got it with that so I did not spend money on it. I did install it. WHY??? I had to, just in case it broke something I was supporting. Otherwise... Let it pass just like Vista. A ho-hum upgrade to a valuable environment for not apparent gain and a LOT of trouble. That's why ME got my vote. I think Vista will be in second place in a couple of years.

ME was just a minor change that MS got some to buy.

by njg123 - 3/3/07 11:36 AM In reply to: Windows ME. The question is WHY??? by slyfox16

ME really had no major advances, if I remember correctly. It just was a slight alteration in the look with a few new gizmos. I think that Gates needed to keep the stock price up.

ME is the worst

by cam man 14 - 3/2/07 6:53 PM In reply to: Which Microsoft Windows version would you consider the worst by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

ME was a worthless OS that was rushed through and ended up being worse than 98. I hope that Windows didn't do the same in Vista. I'm going to OS X when Lepord comes out (macbook) but if they failed like in vista like they did you ME I'm never coming back.

The worst OS I had was Windows ME

by Broman400 - 3/2/07 7:24 PM In reply to: Which Microsoft Windows version would you consider the worst by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Windows ME was horrible, a complete knock-off of Windows 98... even worser I think!
Always the blue screen of death and other crap.
Downloads and programs were slow, ugly looking desktops...

The best that I use is XP, soon to Vista!

All are not good, but the worst is ME!

by borispmchan - 3/2/07 8:46 PM In reply to: Which Microsoft Windows version would you consider the worst by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

No Windows are fool-proof and dead proof, but according to my experience,ME dies nearly every time you turn on your PC, just a matter of when. Sometimes it cannot boot at all, sometimes it stucks when you're doing sometime important and sometimes it cannot be shut down!
A very unstable OS!

Windows 95, the worst I tried.

by DH950 - 3/2/07 9:04 PM In reply to: Which Microsoft Windows version would you consider the worst by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I kept a dual boot system for years, DOS and Windows ?? until around year 2003. DOS for speed & reliability with the early computers, 8088 to 6x86. Skipped Win 3.0, started with 3.1, went with 95 because some programs I wanted required it. The 95 programs didn't work well, had increased problems with 3.x programs under 95 (Microsoft's investment money for 98), & if I needed to get some work done, I had to boot into DOS. I later went back to 3.1/DOS till 98 came along with SE in the works. Articles warned me about 2000 & ME. Ran 98SE/XP dual boot. Finally gave up the dual boot after I bought a motherboard that wouldn't work with 98SE or prior. I sometimes want to cry over all the money I spent upgrading computers, trying to get performance out of each version of Windows I tried. I still have & use Q&A for DOS, the Q&A Windows version was out circulation by the time Windows became reliable enough to want to switch.

windows 95 was really bad

by knight2448 - 3/4/07 4:24 PM In reply to: Windows 95, the worst I tried. by DH950

I agree with you about windows 95 and windows 98, even though windows 98se was revolutionary for the time it was released Microsoft really did not get the GUI they copied from MAC OS really figured out until they released XP.

WINDOWS ME was by far the worst version of windows I ever used. It was the biggest waste of money I have ever experienced, as far as an operating system goes.

I also never saw any major changes between win 98se and windows me.

win ME-Yuck

by back_water_tech - 3/2/07 10:33 PM In reply to: Which Microsoft Windows version would you consider the worst by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have worked in a computer store as a in-house tech for a long time. I have messed with win 3.11 through xp.

I would have to say (I say this without trying Vista yet) that the best way to fix a windows ME box was to make sure it had 256 mb of RAM and blow its hard drive and install windows XP (home or pro, doesn't matter)

There were so many issues with me that it wasn't worth the trouble to even try to fix it.

I did see a few ME boxes that actully ran correctly. and when I found those I was very carefull not to mess with it. :)

Then there were the PC manufacturers that tried to "fix" ME on thier own as well. You know the ones: Compaq, Gateway, eMachines and HP. these machines almost always came in the store with ME and left with XP.

Now, Keep in mind, i don't work at a store anymore. I haven't messed with Vista yet. From what I have read, Vista may be the next ME. I am not planning to buy Vista any time soon, but I still do PC work on the side and, I'd wager, very soon I will get my chance to mess arround in a Vista box.

But I will not buy the $400 Windows XP Service pack 3 (oops, I mean Vista)

Now If someone happens to have an extra copy of Vista, I would take it to play with. ;)

Windows ME

by BeamerMT - 3/2/07 10:45 PM In reply to: Which Microsoft Windows version would you consider the worst by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I think ME was the worst. It tried to have nice features incorporated into an update to windows 98se, however it failed horribly and crash a lot on any machine it was put on.
