Question
Here's a question I have yet to see discussed anywhere. While there is a lot of discussion of the question, "Is your PC ready for Vista?", nowhere have I seen a discussion of whether your SOFTWARE is ready for Vista. In past upgrades I remember seeing many examples of software incompatibility moving from one version of Windows to the next. How can I tell if I will have any software incompatibility issues if I upgrade to Vista?

I hate to say it Art, but the bottom line is you will not know for sure what software is compatible with Windows Vista until you actually try it. Not only does it depend on what exact software version you have but also how you as an individual, use that software. You may not run into any issues while using just the basic features of a specific software but find all kinds of problems when you go to use some of the more advanced functions. It is often difficult to isolate just the software without including some aspect of hardware or at least peripherals. Especially if you consider drivers to be a form of software. The best recommendation I have for you is to:
1. Download and Run Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. This will give you some idea but have found that it misses a lot as well.
2. Check the website for each and every software program that you plan to use for updates, known problems, and/or issues with Vista.
3. Search your favorite forums for problems that others may be having.
4. Download and install the latest updates for all individual software programs that you plan to use.
Not to bore you with the details of my week, but the easiest way to explain it, is to give you some examples. I setup and installed 9 new Vista computers this last week and had slight problems with every one of them. Now what I might consider to be a slight problem, may be really major to you. But you can decide for yourself. Please keep in mind that drivers and patches are coming out every day and some of these issues may even have been corrected by the time you read this or I simply did not have time to find a solution. Here is what I ran into:
HP Photosmart Printer No Vista drivers available yet, but HP had a work around to be able to just print to it without other features.
HP Photosmart 2610 All-in-one No Vista drivers yet, but HP had a work around to be able to just print. Quick buttons on printer do not work but you can use Windows Fax and Scan (Not available on Vista Basic) to force it to scan.
HP V90 All-in-one Printer No Vista drivers yet, but HP had a work around to be able to print. Quick buttons on printer do not work but you can use Windows Fax and Scan (Not on Vista Basic) to force it to scan.
Handspring Visor PDA Could not get it to Sync yet. Customer did not want me to spend any more time on it.
Canon Rebel XT Camera Vista Compatible Software not available for working with Raw format as yet.
Sony USB thumb Drive Would not install and Vista could not find drivers for it. Another brand worked fine. Dont know why?
Quicken 2007 Install During installation, the update seemed to stall and reported not responding, so I killed the application. Quicken did not work and could not be uninstalled or reinstalled at this point. I checked their website and found that this is a common problem in Vista and even if update appears to stall you have to wait up to 2 hours for it to complete. So I had to download Quickens uninstall program and ran a Windows installer repair utility to get me back to being able to reinstall Quicken.
Linksys USB Wireless Adapter No Drivers from Linksys for this model, so I installed new internal PCI Wireless Adapter that did haveVista Drivers.
Belkin PCI Wireless Card Ver 5100 No Vista drivers for this version of this card, I had to replace the Bekin card with a Linksys Card and download new Vista Drivers.
Brand New Dell with Errors 3 brand new Dells all had Sonic Solutions driver errors on boot right out of the box. I had to download patches from Roxio to correct the problem.
Epson Perfection 1650 scanner No Drivers for Vista as yet. I have not found a work around as yet.
Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 No Vista drivers yet, Logitech suggests purchasing a new Vista ready webcam. (What a Surprise)
Palm Z22 PDA Could not get it to sync with Vista. I ran out of time and did not investigate this issue as yet.
Mozzilla Firefox Customer wanted Firefox but had read about some issues with Vista, so decided not to install until we know more.
Hp Laserjet 4m Could not install. This had nothing to do with Vista but more to do with many new computers in general. This computer did not come with parallel printer ports and this printer does not have USB.
Please note that these were all issues that came up while setting up brand new Vista computers and mixing in some older hardware and software. People, well at least my clients, dont seem to be upgrading computers to Vista, but rather are just waiting until they purchase a new computer to make the transition to Vista. For Obvious reasons if you purchase a new Vista computer with all new Hardware and Software and dont reuse any of your old stuff, then you will probably have fewer problems And is this not what every manufacturer would like you to do? From what I have seen so far, manufacturers dont seem to be jumping on creating fixes for older software and hardware as vigorously as they did when Windows XP was released , but want to force use to buy new Vista compatible items. Now if software prices would only come down the way hardware has, we would be all set. $679 for Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate? You can almost buy 2 new computers for that

Windows has this available for you;

Maybe this will help.
Applications that have earned the "Certified for Windows Vista" logo

Applications that have earned the "Works with Windows Vista" logo

I beta-tested Vista and found that the utility up on MS that checks out your system and software works very good but not perfect, i had many MS and other software that wasn't going to cut it with Vista not to mention most of my MM stuff ,so i gave up and sticking with XP Pro MCE.
Just to much of a cost to update so many of the software.
Good Luck
Dave
No my PC isn't ready for Vista but that's only because by already
downloading the program from Microsoft it tells me that a few devices
I have installed such as my webcam will probrably not work or may not
work with Vista installed. I guess that other drivers or a new web cam might need to be installed. I also see that other devices may need to be uninstalled before my PC is able to have Vista installed
which is a cost as usual and a pain at the same time.
Vista upgrade advisor is all well and good if you are running XP. I am still on an NT machine so the advisor won't play with me at all. Incidentally the error message I got was that the upgrade advisor would run on either XP SP2 or on Vista. Stable doors and bolting horses spring to mind on that last option!
Ah well back to the stone age with me apparently.
I too have rejected Vista because old programs I use often don't work with Vista. I read an article recently (sorry can't quote source) where an industry pundit suggested that it would cost people $18 to sort out incompatabilities for every $1 they spent on a Vista upgrade.
Hello Art:
Let me make this quick and simple. Go to the Microsoft Homepage and you will find a download entitled Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. I downloaded the small program and used it with great success. The report was very informative and simple to comprehend.

the advisor is very good, too good if anything, don't just stop at the initial page that tells you that your setup is OK for Vista, dig deeper and you will find some caveats, my setup is OK but I can't download the upgrade on my C drive, not enough space but gigs of space on my D drive, beaut but I can only download the full version and pay for it on my D drive as XP is in my C drive, expensive isn't it? It also says that I have no DVD drive, funny I have been watching DVD flics for the last three months on my current setup!
if they want more people to use vista, they need to lower the price of it
I just acquired Vista Home Premium and have already experienced software compatibility problems. There is a whole new learning curve on Vista also, which I am trying to get thru. Nothing is where we are use to finding it. So far, about the only way I have found out compatibility issues is by trying it, then seeing if it works. Not sure that I like Vista so far. Would like to hear from other users.
I bought a new HP computer with vista, wish I would of got xp on it. Even my HP printer doesn't work! I contacted HP and they said to consider upgrading my printer. I DON'T THINK SO! Instead, I plug my laptop with xp on it,into my printer. One of my favorite photo programs doesn't work either, and it is a HP program. Printshop 22 does not work. I hope these bugs get fixed or I will install xp on this computer.
Well you are not alone I believe. I had a same problem no one old program worked.Do you think if you go to the store to buy a new software that will be ready for VISTA no I think. When I try it to download the upgrade for the programs which I have no one has been ready for Vista. What I did? Computer with VISTA which I purchased is back in the store and I am happy to use my old one with Windows XP. After all I was very dissapointed and wonder if I would like to have a Vista at all. Tru is it has more features is funcy but for my use I need simplicity which works!!
Knight, I understand pretty much what everyone has said pro and con about Vista, but, here is what I hear you saying, I live my Ford, but it doesn't always start and I never have been able to get the drive shaft to work. (Printer drivers). Some people use their computers not only for communications and information but as a big typewriter. I for one use my computer for almost everything I do including paying bills etc. If I had no printer, I could still do most of the things that I currently do, but it sure would not help. For instance I needed a copy of my bank statement the other day, I printed from the internet in about 1 minute, otherwise I would have had to wait 2 to 3 weeks for the bank to send the statement to me or use gas to go and retrieve it. As I said, some people like Fords, some like Chevys, but you said nothing positive about Vista except that it loaded faster than Media Center. Also one pet peeve I have, you said it was Dell Media Center. I have a brand new list price of $2,000 Dell that has not worked properly since I bought it. I have spent 20 hours on the phone with their tech teams, or lack of tech, and they sent a tech to my house and he supposedly fixed it. Well two hours later, crash. I am in the process of returning my Dell to Dell for a refund and buying an E-machine. So when you tell me you are using a Dell and it took a long time to load Media Center, I wouldn't blame the OS, Bob
Just finished building my new computer and installed Vista 64 bit, Asus MV2- MX Motherboard, AMD AM2, 940 dual core 4600 X2 CPU, 2 GIG DDR2 memory 667 and the usual assortments of HD's, 1 Sony DL DVD recorder and 1 Sony DVD recorder.
Pros:
MS Office PRO 2002, weather reporting software (2 years or older), MS Streets and trips 2006, Turbo Tax 2006 and all of my older hardware works fine
Cons:
Roxio 5 and 7 will not load, Not all of the sub programs of 9 work (the one I use the most), Software that came with the Sony DVD recorders will not load. As I convert assorted home media to DVD or CD depending upon customers home equipment, the fact that Roxio programs do not do what I need. So I use my old slow machine to get the jobs done.
