In my opinion IE still needs work. Most of the time I get errors when loading up IE and esp if another application calls the program. In many cases it will say that a URL is not available, will flash, and in the next moment bring up the page I need. If I ALT+TAB to move back to the calling software, I will get a blank IE screen that I must close before I can get to my work. There does not seem to be a way to notify M/S of these issues.
in my opinion i think that vista has alot of problems, as does ie7. b4 i ever get eithr, windows would have 2 clean up there act. theres all these errors, and problems with both. i say dont touch ether till a new updater er something.

I just purchased a new Gateway computer with vista preinstalled.
My photo printer is not compatible and software is not available from the manufacturer or Microsoft. The all in one printer I use is less than a year old and all though my software installed and with
a patch from from the manufacturer it opened from the desk top one
time and was gone after that. I am prompted to reinstall the printer software if I click the desk top icon.My system came preloaded with Microsoft works, when prompted to register there was no windows Vista operating system listed I'm not sure if Microsoft was identifying my previous works edition or what, how ever the program
locks up when I need to use it. I'm strongly considering bringing out my windows XP computer untill these problem are resolved.
Thanks For the oportunity to get this off my chest.

if you ask me,vista is not worth having right now.microsoft should have worked on it some more before they brought it out to the public.to many people, are complaing about windows vista.i am going to stick with windows xp for now, until windows makes vista better.
My husband got a new computer with vista installed. I have Windows XE
( i think I wrote that right). Anyway, he asked me to do some work on the new computer. After reading some of the other posts readers have put in, I agree with them. Microsoft should have left things the way they were. One of my most difficulties with the vista program is finding the place where you log off of. I find I spend a lot of my time just trying to find the off button.

My hard drive failed on a 4 year old (AMD XP1800, 512Mb Ram, ABIT KR7A motherboard, ATI 9500 128 mb Radeon Graphics Card). Ok so i thought i might as well load Vista as i would have to do a complete rebuild anyway. I purchased Vista Home Premium and it loaded up ok. Then my troubles began. It did not recognise the on board HCI RAID controller so the drives attached to the RAID ports could not be seen. No problem, i just moved them to the normal IDE ports and that fixed that problem, but obviously i now cannot use any of the 4 RAID hard drive connectors. My next problem was it failed to provide drivers for Soundblaster Live PCI card, and even worse, it didnt like my Netgear 10/100 network card. Therefore no network connection and no access to the internet. I used one of my other PC's to access the Netgear download page and guess what, no Vista support for my Netgear FA311 card and none planned. After searching around i found a thread on YAHOO showing Vista compatible network cards and purchased a D Link DFE-530TX for $14 which Vista supports with its own drivers, so it installed without any trouble. I was then able to access the Internet and download all the latest updates. Regarding software the only application Vista Advisor has complained about is Trend Micro PCcillin 2007 Internet Security, although i havent loaded it yet to test if there are any issues. On balance i like the Vista O/S and am glad i installed it.
I hate to say it Art, but the bottom line is you will not know for sure what software is compatible with Windows Vista until you actually try it. Not only does it depend on what exact software version you have but also how you as an individual, use that software. You may not run into any issues while using just the basic features of a specific software but find all kinds of problems when you go to use some of the more advanced functions. It is often difficult to isolate just the software without including some aspect of hardware or at least peripherals. Especially if you consider drivers to be a form of software. The best recommendation I have for you is to:
1. Download and Run Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. This will give you some idea but have found that it misses a lot as well.
2. Check the website for each and every software program that you plan to use for updates, known problems, and/or issues with Vista.
3. Search your favorite forums for problems that others may be having.
4. Download and install the latest updates for all individual software programs that you plan to use.
Not to bore you with the details of my week, but the easiest way to explain it, is to give you some examples. I setup and installed 9 new Vista computers this last week and had slight problems with every one of them. Now what I might consider to be a slight problem, may be really major to you. But you can decide for yourself. Please keep in mind that drivers and patches are coming out every day and some of these issues may even have been corrected by the time you read this or I simply did not have time to find a solution. Here is what I ran into:
HP Photosmart Printer No Vista drivers available yet, but HP had a work around to be able to just print to it without other features.
HP Photosmart 2610 All-in-one No Vista drivers yet, but HP had a work around to be able to just print. Quick buttons on printer do not work but you can use Windows Fax and Scan (Not available on Vista Basic) to force it to scan.
HP V90 All-in-one Printer No Vista drivers yet, but HP had a work around to be able to print. Quick buttons on printer do not work but you can use Windows Fax and Scan (Not on Vista Basic) to force it to scan.
Handspring Visor PDA Could not get it to Sync yet. Customer did not want me to spend any more time on it.
Canon Rebel XT Camera Vista Compatible Software not available for working with Raw format as yet.
Sony USB thumb Drive Would not install and Vista could not find drivers for it. Another brand worked fine. Dont know why?
Quicken 2007 Install During installation, the update seemed to stall and reported not responding, so I killed the application. Quicken did not work and could not be uninstalled or reinstalled at this point. I checked their website and found that this is a common problem in Vista and even if update appears to stall you have to wait up to 2 hours for it to complete. So I had to download Quickens uninstall program and ran a Windows installer repair utility to get me back to being able to reinstall Quicken.
Linksys USB Wireless Adapter No Drivers from Linksys for this model, so I installed new internal PCI Wireless Adapter that did haveVista Drivers.
Belkin PCI Wireless Card Ver 5100 No Vista drivers for this version of this card, I had to replace the Bekin card with a Linksys Card and download new Vista Drivers.
Brand New Dell with Errors 3 brand new Dells all had Sonic Solutions driver errors on boot right out of the box. I had to download patches from Roxio to correct the problem.
Epson Perfection 1650 scanner No Drivers for Vista as yet. I have not found a work around as yet.
Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 No Vista drivers yet, Logitech suggests purchasing a new Vista ready webcam. (What a Surprise)
Palm Z22 PDA Could not get it to sync with Vista. I ran out of time and did not investigate this issue as yet.
Mozzilla Firefox Customer wanted Firefox but had read about some issues with Vista, so decided not to install until we know more.
Hp Laserjet 4m Could not install. This had nothing to do with Vista but more to do with many new computers in general. This computer did not come with parallel printer ports and this printer does not have USB.
Please note that these were all issues that came up while setting up brand new Vista computers and mixing in some older hardware and software. People, well at least my clients, dont seem to be upgrading computers to Vista, but rather are just waiting until they purchase a new computer to make the transition to Vista. For Obvious reasons if you purchase a new Vista computer with all new Hardware and Software and dont reuse any of your old stuff, then you will probably have fewer problems And is this not what every manufacturer would like you to do? From what I have seen so far, manufacturers dont seem to be jumping on creating fixes for older software and hardware as vigorously as they did when Windows XP was released , but want to force use to buy new Vista compatible items. Now if software prices would only come down the way hardware has, we would be all set. $679 for Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate? You can almost buy 2 new computers for that

Thanks for this great information. I recently purchased a new computer with Vista. Not because I wanted Vista, but I needed a new computer. My only problem has been installing Linksys but was resolved after 2 calls and 2+ hours to the help desk. Do you have any advice on a compatible all-in-one printer/scanner that would be likely to install without issues and calls to the help desk? Thank you, I am a novice and don't enjoy long trouble shooting problelms.
Hi Denise,
I have not installed any Vista compatible All-in-one printers as yet. The problem that you run into is that there are so many drivers and software programs that get installed with an All-In-One printer that I think it is going to take a while to work all the bugs out for Vista. Some printer manufacturers have only just worked the bugs out for XP, others still have problems. One thing that I did forget to mention is that you can still buy XP computers from any online source that sells business computers. If you happen to go to Dell.com, just click on Small Business. The other advantage to buying business computers is you don't get all the pre-installed junk and trial software that come crammed onto all the home computers. Personally, I don't really see any need, advantage or reason to go to Vista other than for the fun of it or if you just have to be the first one on your block to have it.
I also purchased a new computer with Vista installed on it. I use a Canon Pixma Mp530 all-in-one. I had to go the Canon web site to download the new drivers but after I installed them I have not had any problem with my printer. I have used it to print and to scan pictures into my computer. I have not tried to fax with it yet but I do not anticipate any proble with it.
I installed Microsoft Office 97 with not problem and have been using it. I installed Quicken 6 with no problem.
Vista is supposed to have a program on it making it easy to transfer your information from the old machine to the new one using a transfer cable. I was not able to do this, I had to do it the old fashioned way backing up the information to a CD and installing it on the new machince after the programs were installed.
Vista is different from XP but it has been easy and fun exploring the new system.
Would I do it again? Yes I love being in on the ground floor and working out the bugs.
what computer are you using with the canon mp530? i will be
purchasing a new system also and i'm interested in this printer.
i want to make sure it's compatible with HP computers in case I
buy an HP, thanks juju
I have found Vista to be picky about stuff as well but I have a Linksys USB adapter and it worked fine so there may be another issue. I had trouble getting Vista to wake up right with my video card, had to tell it not to sleep. I have a Biostar GForce 6100 and there are no drivers for Vista.
Denise - I don't have Vista installed yet but am gathering drivers ahead of time for what I can find. I have a Canon Multipass 360, not a new model by any means, but Canon has Vista drivers for it, along with the application software that goes with it. In looking over the site quickly they appear to have Vista support for many of their printers, I would estimate my MP360 is about 3 years old. You might consider that brand.
IT GAVE ME A BSOD. What now? After reboot, ran it again. It has been running for 24 hours without any results... What now? SO MUCH FOR MICROSOFT SOFTWARE.
