Next Episode - OEM - Got Questions?

by acedtect CNET staff - 2/27/07 3:47 PM

Next time on Real Deal, I'll tackle the whole issue of Original Equipment Manufacturer software or OEM. It's cheaper, but what are the restrictions?

Ask your questions here.

“Look what I got on my install disc!” (and then sadness)

I will sometimes receive OEM software a scanner or digital camera's software install disc. The side of the products box will mention some great sounding software, "...included on the install disc!” Frequently the included software ends-up being a stripped down version with no option to purchase an upgrade to the full version (at less than full price). I try to ignore the temptation to use this software.

My advice is don't be lured into making a decision to choose a particular piece of hardware because it comes with an OEM versions of a software application you thought would need to purchased separately. You will likely end-up purchasing a full version later in order to get the functionality that you were expecting from the OEM version.

due to piracy OEM versions are installed in almost every computer, you got no support?, too bad hire a company to help you, I would say that less than 15% of Windows installations down here, are legal

Why is it some what cheaper to buy OEM version than retail.
Can you buy OEM software directly from the vender like can you buy vista from Microsoft directly if not why cant you.
