NO bickering in this posts.

by Ins22spice - 7/11/07 5:25 PM In reply to: Cable uses "copper." by R. Proffitt Moderator

If you shift to FIOS, you cannot get a phone connnection using a old copper phone connection.

Cable companies are different since the phone conversation are routed in packets through the internet and is much cheaper than copper wires (connected to your telephone company to your house or apt),except for the capital expenses of laying the cable. As long you can talk on the phone you really do not care. In facts it is just cause few dollars a month and rest are profits. Most unlimited plans are $39.99 and above.Profit margins are high as 90 percent.

If you choose to take cable company as your basic telephone provider, it is certainly not cheap unless you accept the bundle of internet, telphone and television channels.

If you choose just the telephone and not any of those mentioned, there you get into problem. Since there is no copper wiring any more, local phone providers just cannot connect a telephone to your home.

Not even Verizon(since they are not going to lay copper lines for you again). Unless you choose to keep FIOS. Lot of folks agree this monopolizes the service provider since the other compannies do not have access to fiber optic shareing unlike the copper wires which can be leased.

That is what I meant.I do not intend to pick up a discussion on this matter. If there is something wrong in this post, please do reply with explanations

The bundle or TRI FECTA is...

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 7/11/07 6:06 PM In reply to: NO bickering in this posts. by Ins22spice

Best for either cable or phone company. I know some complain bitterly about the local cable rates as they are north of 60 a month. That's just for the cable TV. The 3 in one deal is 99.99 a month with unlimited calling and more.

The phone co deal with the tri fecta is 99.99 a month here as well. Here they supply either DSL plus Sat TV or FIOS (does all 3) depending on the area is or is not FIOS.

I symp with those that think that the paying field should be level but it isn't.

What do I do? I take the tri fecta and have saved a lot in just one year.

Verizon DSL

by willibaldoops - 2/21/07 5:15 PM In reply to: Verizon DSL Slow Speed Issue by Strad

Verizon seems to allocate bandwith on a revolving basis. My DSL speed will get very slow, like now, 96k! and other times will be 384k. It never approaches the advertized speed rate. the problem is not my computer, modem etc. if that was the case, the problem would always be prresent. the variable is on Verizon's end and it has to do with inadequate bandwidth. They move it around depending on who is complaining the most. i've notice that when I run speed check, Toast, they will pump it up, since their software can determine who is monitoring speed. In general, verizon is a poor provider of DSL service.

Almost too easy

by MeanDonnaJean - 2/25/07 8:40 AM In reply to: Verizon DSL Slow Speed Issue by Strad

After readin' this entire thread, I have finally...and thats after me thinkin' about it for well over one year now...made a decision as to whether or not I should upgrade my dinosaurish dial-up to somethin' that's, well.....a bit faster. My choices were either Verizon DSL or Time Warner Cable's whatever-the-heck-its-called....with both choices bein' bundled packages and both bein' MUCH higher priced than what I'm currently payin' now ($9.95).

For the first time in my 50 year old life (and with a lotta input from you good folks here at CNET) my decision has just been made...and almost effortlessly at that.

Verizon DSL won't be comin' to THIS ol' gal's computer any time soon.

I wish I had come here a LOT sooner!

Re: Verizon DSL Slow Speed Issue - Me too!!!

by bpgveg14 - 2/28/07 10:47 AM In reply to: Verizon DSL Slow Speed Issue by Strad

I have had the same EXACT problems as you! I thought that DSL was supposed to mean Dedicated Service Line, hence there should be NO issue based on higher traffic.

Verizon has recently begun to offer FiOs in my neighborhood.

Being the cynic that I am, I wonder if THEY are messing around with the DSL speeds in an effort to move people to the higher priced FiOs.

Problem is, this is just pissing me off MORE, and eager to find a Verizon alternative!

FIOS

by islandporgy - 2/28/07 12:04 PM In reply to: Re: Verizon DSL Slow Speed Issue - Me too!!! by bpgveg14

It is not in my area yet but, what you say could be true about the service we are getting now. It is more money but if the service is good it would be well worth it. They have three speed selections.
Up to 5 Mbps/2 Mbps
Up to 15 Mbps/2 Mbps
Up to 30 Mbps/5 Mbps
And the best part is FIOS TV, I do not know what they would do about Direct TV. Which they Advertise.

Entertainment is becoming very expensive, (if the service is good it would not be bad).

If you get it let us know how it is.

Good Luck:

A better solution

by 0rangeman - 2/28/07 2:17 PM In reply to: FIOS by islandporgy

Seeing as how everyone here is having the same problems as I have had..in the past.. I would suggest switching to Cable as I did. When I switched, (last week Friday 23rd), I noticed that when the Cable representatives came and hooked up the modem, my speed actually increased greatly, and it was actually between the hours of 4pm and 11pm, 4 pm to be exact. Usually between those times, my internet speed would GREATLY decrease, but it didn't. This is where I knew for sure that it was not my phone lines, filters, or any sort of thing relating to my phones. So in the end, I am done with Verizon after 6 years, and I am actually glad I changed to Cable. So thanks for the help anyway to all those that actually gave advice! Have a great day!

Good Firewall

by islandporgy - 2/28/07 4:12 PM In reply to: A better solution by 0rangeman

I use ZoneAlarm and I had both Cable & Verizon at the same time, That was because I was getting rid off Verizon and I wanted to make a decision. The Speed was there for Cable. I was not sure about the security, I did not know how many attacks was getting through my firewall. The amount off attacks I was getting in two months with Verizon I got in a day with Cable.
I had the trusted Zone set at high on ZoneAlarm on both Computers the one with cable & the one with verizon. I even switched computers to see if it was a different setting on the computer that was not set the same, but I got the same results.
Guess what I kept cable for 6 months before I switched back to Verizon.
I now have verizon and dealing with the good and the bad speed that I get at times.
I am waiting for Verizon FIOS to get in my area, and I will go for Fios.

Good Luck:

by biteme4 - 3/3/07 2:37 PM In reply to: Verizon DSL Slow Speed Issue by Strad

maybe if we do that they will change their ways...i submitted to 7 on your side after i saw this post

since they advertise UP TO 3MB im not sure theres any thing we can do about anything but change providers....but would be great to expose their practices

i have residential dsl UP TO 3MB...ive had service with verizon for 7years and past few weeks its been unacceptable but had been fine before then (lucky me)...so just like everyone else tech support says its problem on my end etc...so i decided to check my download rates thru dslreports.com periodically through the day and i see a pattern...basically while everyones at work they reduce download rates but magically around 530-6pmish til maybe 1am or so and on the weekends the rates jump up to 2500kb....but i work from home so slow rates during the day dont work for me.

below is what i have recorded...im aware the rates arent 100% accurate due to servers speeds etc but it give a good overall picture

should get 3mbps down, 864up

Verizon Managing Bandwidth

by willibaldoops - 3/3/07 4:17 PM In reply to: everyone submit request to 7 on your side or other news orgs by biteme4

I'd be really pleased if V provided even 50% of what I'm paying for. I got the cheapo plan of 800k since they have never gotten the speed close to that on my line. They consistently provide from 96-288. Often lower with fairly common non-delivery of email and other crap such as dropped ISP. I have their phone service also including wireless. Verizon consistently delivers voice mail up to 2 weeks after it is sent. Really the most crappy service imaginable.

Verizon phone techs are mostly idiots that are hired without a clue. The y ALWAYS give the wrong advice and technical consult. I regularly ask for the manager when the "tech" opens its mouth from the start wanting me to go through a complete system configuration, reboots, etc. The problem has always been in Verizon's setting "in the office".

They oversell what they can deliver like the airlines overselling seats. Then they catch up to it some time later, based on who complains the most. Verizon's DSL lines definitely are not dedicated. The bandwidth definitely changes with the time of the day and who is on-line. I tried to send emails with attachments yesterday for hours and their server would not handle them except at an extremely slow rate, eventually failing completely. I'd like to know if anyone has good DSL service in NW Indiana?

Verizon Tech Advice

by islandporgy - 3/3/07 9:32 PM In reply to: Verizon Managing Bandwidth by willibaldoops

I can say that is true about some techs have the knowledge and some do not have it. When the techs give the wrong advice it can be very annoying. I have delt with that for years with verizon, it comes to the point where I get annoyed and ask to speak to a supervisor.

Good luck

Verizon slogan should be "Verizon where technology meets failure."
