My Sony Vaio laptop running XP Professional suddenly one morning wouldn't boot up. Ctrl-Alt-Del will restart but goes no further. I can enter BIOS during this process, but nothing else responds. Can I get to a command prompt through bios in order to attempt a restore? Any suggestions?
Restart the computer and immediately start pressing the F8 key, once per second till a selection screen loads. Use the up/down arrows to move to the "Last Known Good" selection, then press the "Enter" key.. Follow the prompts and hopefully Windows will load to the last known good registry entry.
Hope this helps.

F8 doesn't respond. The only thing that will work is F2 - the BIOS.
I'd install another hard disk, install from the restore CDs and retest.

Do you have you XP installation disk? You could put that in the drive and try the "repair" option.
Your system should boot from the disk.
this EXACT thing happend to me and i had to get a new hard drive (but it was free because of my warrenty)...(but i had a dell)...and i needed a cd for Windows Xp..
