I used to use Norton's Antivirus but the last couple of years that I had it I was having to reformat my hard drive a couple of times a year. It would keep locking up my computer and I wouldn't be able to do anything till I did a reformat. about 1 1/2 years ago I switched to AVG Antivirus and haven't had any more problems since then.
i use clamav on linux, not because i need protection for linux, because i download things for my ma who doesn't have a net connection.
I use zone alarm for antivirouse and the whole suite from zonealarm I have gotten a good deal on price and my friends say it is one of the best to use. does anybody dissagre if so give me your op.
AVG7 Free, it is totally free for in Home use, it is acurate and responsve & reliable.
I have been using AVG free products since when ever, I can not remember just what year I started, I have tried Norton but I hadf got in to a lot of trouble with Norton, may be they inserted a little problem to get me to up grade and buy an add on to there anti virus software I bo not no.
I have used CA Anti-Virus for two years now and it has been very reliable and is it so much cheaper than Norton and the others. I just bought a two year license for $24.95 and have already downloaded it on three of my computers! It constantly keeps up with the latest updates and it complements with Windows XP very well. Each time Windows lets me know my virus scanner needs updated, CA is right on top of it and downloads the needed update!
I also use Ad-Aware SE along with Spamweed for my email. Using all three has kept my computer safe so far!
I have been using AVG now for four or six? years at least. I tried Nortons initially (about 1999) for six month and couldn't believe what a system hog it had been, when I switched to AVG. I am even more horrified when I see friends puters running Nortons or McAfee 2006 how much more they have bloated and SLOW systems down. Kaspersky I also tried briefly and it was ok BUT really.... WHY pay for a service that can be had for free at least as good if not BETTER. The only wee catch with the free version of AVG is it cannot be installed on even a home network and is only good for a single stand alone machine. At least it proves that antivirus delivery does not need to be system greedy and if you run a network you may have to purchase avg, or find another program equally easy on system resources. I could not recommend Nortons of McAfee to anyone (let alone they are sooo confusing also).
My desicion about anti virus is AVG antivirus.........

I use BellSouth Internet Security Suite, which includes firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware. It has worked well for over a year. But then how does one really know? Strange things happen from time to time, but none seem to be disabling. For example, I currently receive this error message every time I start up: "Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Window Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually." I then click on "OK", and carry on as though nothing had happened. If I restart the computer, I just get the same message again. If I search Help and Support, there is a fair amount of discussion of this message, but nothing resolves the matter. It appears that this matter is like a routine hiccup in the system that is otherwise meaningless. I cannot see that it is affecting my use of the computer at all. To strengthen my computer's defenses, I am seriously considering installing a wired dsl router/firewall. I am only hesitating because I fear this may unnecessarily complicate my life. I have read a number of comments suggesting that this is a good idea, but I wonder if there are any drawbacks to using a hardware firewall. I do not live on the computer, and I have only two or three hours a week to devote to it. If anyone would like to comment on any of these issues, I am open to being educated. (My system is a 1-1/2 year old XP).
I use a Linksys router to connect multiple home computers to a router. There was a steep learning curve, but customer service is 24/7 and it's free. A fringe benifit is Linksys has a hardwire fire wall, which I am told is better then a program such as ZoneAlarm (I use both).
Spy Sweeper with Antivirus.
It has blocked hijacking attempts and removes cookies. Fortunately, I have encountered no virus I am aware of yet.
I like the programs with the Firewall and Spyware removal that I have also. They run in the real time and remove the spyware before it gets on the computer, unlike many of the others.
I found that Trend Micro is very easy to use and has always found any virus or spy ware , all my programs run well with it unlike the Norton anti virus i had , also they are very fast with any updates,
For me it has got to be one of the best anti virus programs on the market
I've used Avast over three years now and never had a virus.besides being free its not a (RAM HOG).PC boots fast updates quick without any user intervention. and the enterface is quite simple to use.and the program WORKS:)I love it
I read all the responses so far (193!). Surprised there was (to the best of my knowledge) no mention of Avira's AntiVir Guard. I (and several friends and clients) have used their free version for couple years now. No virii have slipped through for any of us.
I suggest folks take a look at their credentials and comparison tests. See and judge for yourselves. They are in Germany, but that doesn't seem to interfer in any way (OK, a bit of 'humorous' English wording sometimes, but so what?).
Minor problem may be in the works tho. I've heard that Avira will stop supporting Win98 in June. That's OK by me, it'll probably push me to Windows 2000 Pro -- which I've been threatening to do for over a year now. Anything to save me from XP and Vista. Yes, and there's Linux too.
I do thank all the reponders for the suggestions and their experiences with other AV products. It all helps knowing alternatives.

No, I have no connection to these folks, other than a satisfied user.
I have used Avast Home Edition 4.7 for 3 years now with no problems. Updates itself regularly (at least 2 - 3 times per week)Excellent free Anti-Virus
