The sturdiest hard drive MP3 player

by walterwood - 2/21/07 9:28 AM

I know that I can't run with a hard drive MP3 player but I do walk and carry my current Zen Micro. I use it a lot in my car, I also carry it in to work, use it at home a little like a portable stereo, and when walking downtown I stick it in my pocket. I've dropped it 3 times in the last 1 and a half and I have to do a little percussive maintenance. Is there a hard drive MP3 player that solidly built and could survive if I had a case of the butter fingers on a bad day?

Considering that you're replacing a Zen Micro...

Which doesn't have a very high capacity in the first place (5-6 GB?), maybe you should consider a flash-based player. If you want to stay in the Creative family, the Zen V or V plus could suffice with capacities ranging from 1GB to 8GB, depending on model. Or any of the SanDisk Sansa e200 series players.

I don't have either of these players - I own iPods, but I would seriously consider these if I were to add to my collection. (I like gadgets) By the way, I used to run with an 30 GB Video iPod until I got a 2nd Generation Nano. I used an armband. The Nano's casing is pretty sturdy, but as with all iPods, doesn't come with a lot of bells and whistles.

Here's the thing: Storage Space

I'm starting to really rack up quite the music collection through various ways. I'm a member of Emusic, Real Music Store, and another hip-hop music site that often gives you free music from the artists. My wife has a Sansa e260 (4GB) and I've had my eye on the 8 GB Zen V but I'm wondering if that will be enough for my music tastes. I also download various podcasts, that's why I asked the question about sturdy Hard drive MP3 players because they give you the most bang for your buck in terms of storage

Perhaps the Creative Zen Vision M?

The casing seems pretty sturdy. And it should work with Real Music Store. With any hard drive player and even flash based players, a case adds an extra layer of protection.

Is 8GB enough for you? How large is your collection? Well, I have around 300+ cds on my computer (out of a collection of approx 2500), and including purchased downloads, have about 5500 songs on my 30GB iPod. And I have video too. With that and podcasts, I don't think I have the time to listen to them all. But I do like the idea of having all of those songs in my pocket. That said, I use my 4GB Nano more often than the 30GB iPod because it is a lot lighter. I don't feel the need to put it in an armband for running - it stays in my pocket and it feels almost weightless. But I suppose if you're walking it's not so much a big deal.

So, that's my perspective. Hopefully, you'll get some other opinions.

Massive Storage

I have a Wolverine ESP that i purchased from Costco.com, it has a 100gb hard drive and can be used as a DVR.
They also have a 120 and 160 gig units, i belive these are the largest capacity hard drive audio/media player out there.
You can definitly walk with this player but you aint gonna run with it, way to bulky.
check em out at wolverinedata.com.

iPod, iPod, iPod

by WaltCD - 2/26/07 11:23 AM In reply to: The sturdiest hard drive MP3 player by walterwood

As all of the magazine and website reviews will tell you: Go with an iPod. There is simply no substitute. I've had a 60GB iPod for two years now, and it works great. I run with it and no problems. According to the folks at the Apple store, iPods load up a buffer of about 32 MBs of data. So, if your songs are not larger than 32 MBs, there should be no skipping problem. I have Podcasts that are over an hour long, but are only 16 MBs big.

The features of the iPods are amazing, and just continue to get better. My wife has an 8GB Nano, and it is so incredibly light, but holds so MUCH data! Being a flash memory drive, there's supposedly no chance of skipping.

The reviews continue to come in, and continue, again and again, to list iPod at the top every time. There just really is no substitute.

Dropped iPod

by WaltCD - 2/26/07 11:26 AM In reply to: iPod, iPod, iPod by WaltCD

One more thing: I've dropped my iPod many times. Usually just from the cup holder to the floor of the car (MANY times). I've also dropped it out of the car.

I > DO < however, have my iPod in a hard plastic case. I believe it would be silly not to have > ANY < MP3 player in a case of some sort, if nothing else but to ward off scratches and dirt.

advice please

by mcdougall21 - 3/4/07 7:56 PM In reply to: Dropped iPod by WaltCD

i recently corrupted my 30 gig video ipod somehow (dropping it multiple times outside while running/running in general?) and ran with it all the time. to make a long story short, it's done for. i need an ipod to run with. i dont really have any songs backed up on cd or itunes (got them from friends deleted them etc.) So, should i go for the creative zen vision M 30 gig and run with it? i dont mind the weight but will it break easily. i really just want it to have a napster compatible plaer so i can use their service, but i need something thatll hold up when i run.

I would get an armband

regardless of what hard drive player you get. If you're holding it or have it clipped to your waistband you're more likely to drop it during active uses. If you want something that works with Napster and is a hard drive player, then go with the Zen Vision M. I prefer running/walking/working out with a flash based player, such as the Nano or the Zen Vision V(or V Plus). I save the bigger gun (my iPod) for work or walking about town when I'm in jeans(put it in my pocket) or carrying my purse.

But I realize that not everyone can have more than one player, so definitely go with the Vision M and invest in an armband for active uses. With the Creative you have a greater variety of download/subscription services to choose from rather than be stuck with iTunes (not a bad choice, but no subscription service).
