Antivirus Programs

by fwirrell - 2/23/07 7:28 PM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I use both AVG and Norton. The only conflict is having to disable Norton scanning incoming e-mail messages. I find this works best for me.

Freedom All the way

by dope.smugglaz - 2/23/07 7:34 PM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I like the idea of protection being free.
I don't pay the government something as ARMY tax to keep the intelligence network going. I find the AOL Security Suite a fab. The Anti Virus engine and Firewall powered by McAfee are free. The Spyware and Adware products have already been free of cost. So the it appeals me to have AOL:'s McAfee powered Virus scanner installed on the desktop. Although it works only in the sage browsing world.

WHY...I use AVG Anti-Virus on my computer

by NICKIELUV - 2/23/07 7:38 PM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have used several different programs on my computer....but I would have to vote for AVG antivirus software hands-down. I tracked all the viruses my computer recieved with each program. I've found that in most cases the virus has infected my system before it is detected. Since I have been using AVG it located the virus and alert's you the minute it finds its with less damage done to your system files or programs....the selling point !! It's F>R>E>E>.

AVG, Hands down!

by Rik56 - 2/23/07 7:39 PM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

One, it is free, Two, it does not seem to slow down my computer, and Three, nothing has gotten past it for long, generally only one update away, mostly because I forgot, but now that I have satellite dsl, I let AVG update automatically.

OE removal of access to "unsafe" attachments to mail.

by fcervinka - 2/23/07 7:56 PM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I changed from dial-up to DSL a few days ago and am finding that attachments are so often removed from my e-mail which had rarely occured with previous dial-up service.

My computer is a Dell Dimention 8100 with ME. It is my understanding that the DSL service (Centurytel) includes virus protection. I have been using Norton antivirus, Zone Alarm, and Ad-aware with excellent results and have not uninstalled any of these when making the change to Centurytel DSL. Any suggestions?

Norton

by carsonight - 2/25/07 9:00 PM In reply to: OE removal of access to "unsafe" attachments to mail. by fcervinka

Norton screwed up an old ME machine so badly a pro couldn't fix the hard dreive, or even get in it to reformat. If it's not too late, get rid of Norton and install Avast! or AVG.

Why AVG.

by notoftherightmind - 2/23/07 7:57 PM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

First it is free big points there. Next I am not comfortable with Norton and Mcafee pissed me off in the early days. The rest I was not impressed with, so I returned to AVG.

Which antivirus utility protects your computer and why?

by The Santa Clause - 2/23/07 8:11 PM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had always been able to rely on the trustworthiness of Norton and all of Symantec products. Between Antivirus, System Protection, Password Protection, System works, It seems that I have just about all of them so it seems. I tend to go with the flow of other major companies relying on it's ability to protect the giant companies like in the bank where I used to work. If they trust Norton then I will. Since I started to fully integrate my system to being overly protected with the latest security for my computer, I have not been bothered by spooks of any kind of hackers trying to break in to take a peek at what I have.

Waste no more money on any antivirus software !

by hifly.liu - 2/23/07 8:26 PM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Believe me! The Microsoft Update is all you need to protech your computer Now!
Antivirus software is usefull before Windows Update appear. Now the proper method to protech your computer is Windows Update and Microsoft Update with 2 seperate HDD(not one HDD with partitions). Don't forget to update all the hardware drivers and software patchs.
First HDD is for OS and programs, and the others are for data. Place My Documents folder in the second HDD. When you feel the system to slow down, don't waste any time trying to scan your system or fix the problems. Just format C: disk and reinstall the OS. Trust me ! This is the quickest and most stable method to get rid any problems.

You are Joking

Do actually spend the time to format one drive and transfer all of the data to other drive once each day in order to save the money that you would spend on a free antivirus program.

It sounds like you are the kind of person who saves the wasted time of calling a travel agent for an airline ticket from New York to Los Angeles by simply getting started and driving your car instead.

I hope that your computer is not connected to the internet.

Sorry if it seemed that way

by LionsMike - 2/27/07 12:06 PM In reply to: lionsmike remark by tbrad1954

I was simply responding to your comment that rather than do a regular automatic scan, you format your hard drive and reinstall. I have done that and it takes most of a day to do it. I could not see doing that even one a week never mind every few days.
If you read the posts here you will see there are many people who had antivirus programs and still got infected.
I am sure that most of them had updates to their Operating Systems.
You are the first to suggest that NO ONE NEEDS ANY ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM AT ALL. I thought at first that you had mis typed something and went back and read your post again.
Perhaps you should start a discussion on the merits of running computers with no protection except your Operating System. If that is possible or even the least bit tangeable, it would certainly be worth a great deal of discussion.
I moderated one of the AOL Anti-virus chats for a few years. Many of the people who had experienced a serious infection had been updating their O/S but not updating their AV definitions.
I believe (and most others do also) that although each has it own pros and cons, some kind of Anti-Virus program is an absolute must for any computer which ever conects to the internet, or has data inputed through anything other than a keyboard.

PC security..

by castingRod47 - 2/23/07 8:37 PM In reply to: Which antivirus utility protects your computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I don't think a person can really "surf" where ever they want and remain safe..
I purchase the recommneded software for my OS and all seems perfect there..
I have curtailed my acticvities since my PC Projects take priority over Internet websites..
I use McAFEE Products..
since day one this company has been installed on my PC..
I have found its price even better than NORTON..
Except when AOL was having nothing but trouble/I really have no problems w/viruses or anything..McAFEE runs my PC..I have never had a problem--McAFEE even shut down my PC once when I was being attacked thru Messenger..I really just needed to drop AOL..and eventually did..since then MSN.com has been my ISP Provider..I still rely on McAFEE and don't expect to ever change..I have even lowered my McAFEE Product line..and my PC is running great..
..
I have one basic rule about my PC..NO FREEBIES..
If its free..it ain't gonna' work.
