Having a problem finding FREE Vista 64 software firewall. Any suggestions? I need to try one to replace Vista Firewall. It breaks my Epson Stylus C84 printer driver that's included in Vista according to Epson.
ZoneAlarm and others are not ready yet. Anyone heard of "VistaFirewallControl"? I cannot decide if its a real firewall or something else. Appreciate your suggestions or comments.
Glenn
Hi Glenn, I suppose you have concluded by now, from the number of responses to your post, there are no easy answers to your question.
Based on all I have read, there are not yet any easy solutions to your problem, short of purchasing the latest version of some 64bit firewall.
Here is an article that I found interesting and thought you may enjoy reading.

As for Vista Firewall Control, I haven't heard of it before. It may be worth a try, but I can't find reviews of the product. That's a red flag for me.
Also, the word Free may only apply to the download, rather than actual use of the product.
The old cliche, Consumer Beware, certainly applies.
Best of luck and let us know if you find a solution.

Like you I am leery of Vista Firewall Control and could find little about it. From my other post in the Virus & Security Forum Donna downloaded and installed just enough to look around but no real experience.
Am curious if you use McAfee SiteAdvisor... mine flags both of the links you furnished as "yellow" sites. I didn't hang around long enough to digest the content but from what I did see didn't look favorable.
Stan, in my opinion Vista is still beta and should be considered as such. I am finding many pieces of software that are not yet compatible and all sorts of little flaky things that happen from time to time... not major but just annoying and for no apparent reason. Also my printer of recent vintage is not fully functional. Vista has the driver from Epson installed but the Vista firewall breaks it according to Epson. My recommendation is to avoid Vista until some bugs are worked out and software manufacturers have a chance to catch up with Vista and 64-bit. I only have it because it came on a new system.
Thanks for your help and I will let you know if and when another firewall is found to replace the Vista firewall.
All the best!
Glenn
Glen, the link that I posted in the second post is to an article about how to tweak Windows Vista Firewall Settings. I mistakenly wrapped the first link, making it unusable.
I don't use the Mcafee software, but ZA doesn't raise any flags at this site. I've visited there numerous times without any problems. I found several good articles there related to Vista.
I would like to inject a few comments in addition to what Stan said:
* The free versions of ZoneAlarm, Outpost, and Kerio are all still incompatible with Vista, but you may want to give Jetico Personal Firewall a try. The 2.0 beta release is stable while running on Vista, and while I would not consider it quite as good as ZoneAlarm it's still a solid performer and the best free Vista-compatible firewall I know of.
* I have never used Vista Firewall Control either, but from what I have read it's a mediocre add-on for the Windows Firewall. Better than nothing, I suppose, but using this guide to tweaking the Windows Firewall would be about the same.
* In regards to Vista itself, I believe there was somewhere between 300 and 400 known functionality/stability issues in the software at the time of it's release, considered an "acceptable number." Microsoft, of course, does not include that in the advertisements, but at one point did acknowledge problems with the RTM version and stated they were already working on SP1 to address most of the issues, as well as restore some of the functionality that was removed in order to meet the deadline. In your case I blame the third-party developers for not being ready at the time of release, but honestly, Microsoft wasn't ready either.
Regards,
John
Guess I have to disable windows defender for that? Because Vista 64bit Ultimate blocks it from installing saying it's incompatible.
So how compatible with 64bit vista is it? homepage doesn't explecitely state 64bit compatibility.
Thanks in advance
If you upgrade to Windows Vista RETAIL release (I did), then consider yourself a BETA TESTER.
I wish...for NOW...I had just stuck with Windows XP PRO.
IT was the better OS choice for me..at least for now. Still debating the thought of taking off Vista Ultimate and reinstalling my Windows XP Professional.
My humble opinion is that Vista will go down in software history like Windows ME. I should have just waited until 2009 for the "VISTA less Beta OS" or just waited to do a lateral upgrade to MAC leopard when it comes out this spring and just buy a console for games.
We are all Beta Testers...thanks Billy G. (Gates)
By the way, my Stardock Object Desktop program, which includes Window Blinds, made my Windows XP look just as pretty as Vista.
But who really needs a pretty OS???? Need one that is STABLE and WORKS with what you have. I've already have gotten several blue screens of death trying to just play videos because the NON-beta Nvidia drivers are not out yet.
I'm not a happy consumer having purchased Vista. I feel like I bought a new car (or appliance paying the cost of an appliance) only to get it home and find broken parts and shoddy craftsmanship.
For the free Vista Firewall go to the link below. If you are as I am running Vista 64 bit then make sure you download the program pacificaly for 64 bit, not the 2 in 1 version as you will have problems with lack of memory. I have 2 gig and was getting the problem all the time until I changed to the full 64 bit version. Both my wife and myself have now been using this firewall for about 2 months with no problems and it is simple to use and set up, basicaly you enabl or disable programs.

I've been using Vista Firewall Control (free) for a week now without any problems. It can be used independently or integrated with the Vista built-in firewall. Vista Firewall Control displays items that are blocked in a window above the system tray. The firewall is simple to configure and works smoothly with Vista. In a while, I'll install the new Commodo 3.0 free firewall just to compare the two.
Actually I have only recently found something that is not too complicated and handles both incoming and outgoing. Until now I have been forced to use Windows Vista built in firewall. Tried many time but ZoneAlarm simply is not compatible with Vista... causes all kinds of slow down problems and bogs system down.
Just started using PC Tools Firewall Plus 3.0 which is best I have seen. It is no burden on the system resources and I like the way it works... little learning curve in settings for applications but I can live with that. There may be others as well.
Actually my Vista is 32bit and not 64bit as originally indicated.
Glenn
If you are using the 32 bit vista, I have zonealarm working on it. I personally have the 64 bit and zonealarm does not work. I tired the vista firewall control and found it to be ok. Have been doing a lot of testing on the 64 bit so done a clean rebuild yesterday. Rigt now am using Comodo.com firewall and it to seems to be doing a good job.
Not finding anything that I prefer more... am still using the Windows Firewall but still looking. My Vista is 32 bit.
Am about due for a re-format so maybe I will give ZoneAlarm another try them. I still like the way it works and gives the user control over what is going out.
Thanks!
Glenn
