Hi. I have recently attempted to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2007 from my computer (and, after that, Norton Internet Security 2007). These are the steps I took:
1. I used the Norton Removal Tool
2. I deleted from my C drive all files and folders labelled with "Symantec", "Sym", "Norton", "NAV", and "NIS" (I did this from Safe Mode)
3. Deleted the following registry key in Safe Mode: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SYMANTEC
(NOTE: I was also told to delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\SYMANTEC, but that was not in my registry)
4. I ran the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, and was told to delete any entries with references to the Norton product (ie. "NIS", "NAV", "Norton", "Symantec", "CC", "Sym", "MSRedist")..but none were to be found, so I had nothing to delete here.
So, after ALL of this, Norton is still haunting my system. These are the 2 ways (that I'm aware of) that I can tell it's still present:
1. The "Symantec Core LC" service is still listed under the "services" tab in the MSCONFIG window (I disabled and stopped this service, but it's still listed on my computer)
2. This is the important part: whenever I click on an e-mail attachment (I use web-based e-mail, not an e-mail client), I get a popup from Norton Antivirus telling me that it has scanned the attachment and that it is free of viruses.
I have contacted Symantec about this problem, but they keep giving me the SAME steps (see #1-4 above) to do. It's pathetic. Can somebody PLEASE help me? Can you provide any other steps that I could possibly take to COMPLETELY rid my computer of all Norton traces? Is there possibly other items I need to delete from my registry?
Thanks very much

Good Luck !
Thanks for those links. Unfortunately, I've already tried everything suggested on those 2 sites. Neither option worked. Norton traces are still present on my system.
I'd appreciate any further advice from anyone.
Thanks again

Does that one work?
Thank you for the links you provided. Good news: It turns out that Norton was already completely gone from my system. It so happens that Yahoo! mail (which I use) by default uses the Norton Antivirus to scan all attachments.
thanks for these links. i too have a problem with norton. there's one update that i have for norton that will not install. i have e-mailed norton several times, and each tech support person gives me the exact same answers. i have uninstalled, used the norton removal tool, used search to delete all left over files. however, upon reinstalling and running liveupdate the exact same update "program updates to symantec redirector" will download but fail to install. this is norton systemworks 2006 "premier". after my supscription runs out this time, symantec can have its norton. i quit reinstalling problem applications after the fifth try.
if you have yahoo on computer, they now jam you with norton, other than that ,only way i got rid of norton was to send several rude emails to them and cancel my subscription
go to different anti virus or spyware that u use and list norton as a not allowed on your computer, your programme should block it
After reading what you have done I can only say run "search" and try to delete it from any parts that come up , if it does not delete ,it will tell you where the parts that are left are. I would not use norton but when I did and, wanted it removed norton sent all the imfo.
good luck .
Getting rid of Norton. Good Luck! I fought that war for a long time and therefor will Never Ever use the product again. I think I wound up cleaning my whole disk
From a website run by a very knowledgeable guy called "The Shadow". You can find him on the "Lockergnome" website.:
For those wanting, or needing the Norton Removal Tool,

If you have windows defender. Or some other program that can configure startup programs just block all norton products. Thats how i got it to stop bugging me. My aunt had norton, we uninstalled it but it remained. Also norton 2007 dosen't stop any spyware and doesnt stop a few viruses. I scaned with it several times, and found nothing. Then i installed Spybot-Search and Destroy. It found 48 infections. Also installed AVG free. Found 4 viruses that norton missed .........
It has been awhile but NAV has files located throughout the Windows folders. Run a search for these files (beginning with NAV). I discovered years ago that NAV runs a startup process that examines executable files prior to being used by the OS. This was it's way of detecting some of the more insidious virii. If so, the system will not delete the files while running normally. Norton's software is supposed to queue these files for removal on the reboot but it appears that is not the case. It has been years but you might try removing these files (be certain they are Norton's) in safe mode. Also, for registry cleaning, I use Registry Mechanic (from PC Tools). It seems to be thorough enough for registry work as there are MANY keys containing Norton's files, not just the ones that you have mentioned. It is sufficient to say that it is quite doubtful you have found them all - by a long shot.
After an abysmal 4 days of trying to install NIS 2007, I'm trying to eradicate this awful software from my system so that I can restore it back to normal operation. I've been through various steps including www.symantec.com/nrt and registry editing like you, and I still have the 'symantec core lc' in my services tab and the 'ccapp' in the startup tab of msconfig. 'ccapp' is a Norton app as well. If I hear anything, I'll let you know. If you here anything, I'd appreciate a heads up. I'm going to try Zone Alarm next. How about you?
Good luck
