by shahrokhan - 12/13/06 5:19 AM In reply to: Illusions is Apples's Reply by shahrokhan

I am sorry. By mistake I wrote illusions. It is actually called Illuminous. Looks pretty similar to (gasp) Vista!

vista = copy & paste mac os X

by Brendan2009 - 12/31/06 5:22 PM In reply to: I am so sorry its Illuminous! by shahrokhan

if you look at vista, everything came from or the idea of it came from Mac OS X. The dark colors is just an adjustment of the shades in the OS. Vista is based primarily on bright colors, so wherever you got that is way off the truth.

Vista is Tiger

by easily confused - 1/26/07 3:43 PM In reply to: vista = copy & paste mac os X by Brendan2009

Vista is essentially OSX10.4. Sadly 50,000 Microsoft developers couldn't do much more than steal the main ideas from Tiger - see widgets/gadgets, see Spotlight/Search, see iCal. They should be fined.

Leopard is coming out in late March, allegedly.

Haha...

by whizkid454 - 1/26/07 3:53 PM In reply to: Vista is Tiger by easily confused

Why is that? Microsoft is just doing what they think will be successful. No need for complaining about a competitor to OS X.

I don't see Vista as competition to OS X

by grimgraphix - 1/26/07 5:07 PM In reply to: Haha... by whizkid454

Realistically, operating systems today are chosen primarily because of their utility and the users preference (a quirk of the users' personality if you will). Since mac users will continue to be mac users if the OS does what they need then there is no reason to change. No reason for a mac user to view Vista as competition and every reason to view it as a copycat.

When a mac or windows person switch computers it is usually based on frustration. A mac won't run CAD programs... A windows machine is vulnerable to online hacks... These are reasons to use both.

I'm sure when I start using Vista, I will find things I like about it and things I dislike. Will it compete with my mac? I highly doubt it but that doesn't mean I won't find uses for Vista.

I agree, but...

by whizkid454 - 1/26/07 7:23 PM In reply to: I don't see Vista as competition to OS X by grimgraphix

In reality, it surely is a competitor because if there was no Microsoft (and Windows), everything would be Apple (and Mac) which would give Apple all of the "power". Microsoft is actually hindering the Mac OS from it's potential, that of it being in every computer.

I agree that it really isn't a competition if you think of it in the way of a user's perspective like you said. If you're a Mercedes owner, you'll probably stick with a Mercedes until you find something you absolutely don't like about it. If your a Ford owner, you won't switch to a Mercedes if the Ford is doing what you want it to do in the first place. (We won't mention which car company stands for which computer company.)

As it says on the Apple website, "...If you want the best of both worlds, you can run your Windows programs on your Mac."

Illuminous is not "dumping Aqua"

by Alegoo92 - 2/3/07 4:37 PM In reply to: I am so sorry its Illuminous! by shahrokhan

I think if Illuminous does supercede Aqua, it will be a more iTunes 7-like OS. There will still be the silver and blues, but also dark-glass and transluscent blacks like the coverflow feature in iTunes 7.

I like the idea. I think what would be best would be like 4-6 different "OS-theme" choices. Like an Aqua, Air, Glass, Metal, Charcoal, ect. setting that transforms the GUI of the entire system seamlessly. And then there would be the default OS X one... A more "aqua" approach to the GUI would be like something I saw on Linux where the windows dragged more watery-like, and clicking made ripples. hmm I think it was called Beryll.

Probably, but

by mrmacfixit Moderator - 1/30/07 4:39 AM In reply to: Waiting for leopard by Liddle9

if Leopard is announced in the same way as the other OS X changes were, you will not get any notice at all. They will just announce that is will go on sale tomorrow. (or words to that effect)

Vista is no threat

by janjop31 - 2/17/07 6:58 AM In reply to: Waiting for leopard by Liddle9

I am a bit disappointed that I still Have to wait a while for Leopard.

I see no threat in Vista though! Vista is just a rip off of OS X functionality and appearance along with the Unix/Linux icon look. Did MS do this to **** off the open source community, the Mac community, or both?

The real issue with Vista is that it's still just DOS with a pretty user interface. MAC OS was
icon driven until OS X and the major transition to a Unix OS has made MAC OS the secure beast it is. Vista is still DOS! MS can add new firewalls and its own brand of Antivirus but hackers can still penetrate the system with spyware (Windows defender doesn't defend against much). Executable files are still as much of a threat as ever. A virus or trojan can still hide behind phony 3 letter file extensions like "pull_my_finger.jpg.scr". Disgruntled VB and .net programmers can still write all the same virii. It is a bit more secure than previous versions of Windows for now but just wait for a few months. In short Vista is not nearly as secure as any Unix based system.

With all of the money that Bill has, why can't Microsoft create something truly new
and innovative? If you build a better OS users will move. So far all I see is Microsoft
genuine validation control schemes, Trusted Computing anti-piracy/anti-privacy schemes, efforts
to compete with other Antivirus/Firewall software makers, and GUI rip-offs. Nothing realy new though.

The truly sad thing is that the percentage of Windows only users is so high that MS can continue to get away with this!

Also waiting

by jeromerobles - 3/15/07 7:42 PM In reply to: Waiting for leopard by Liddle9

I've been waiting for 2 months now, no leopard. Last I heard was their release of a buggy build, Build 4a377, this March 1st. Looks like its gonna be awhile for them to fix it and release the final version. But there's still hope. They just released the last version of Tiger, OSX10.4.9. Based on Apple's track record, Leopard should be out within a few days! I hope it will be this 24th! It drives me crazy just thinking of it, I keep looking on Macforums, etc. just to be sane.

Just my thinking...

by whizkid454 - 3/16/07 12:32 PM In reply to: Also waiting by jeromerobles

I'm no Mac person by any means. It seems as though Apple just released an update for Tiger(10.4.9). To me it would seem that they are releasing another update for Tiger because Leopard is not ready yet and that maybe this update was to give them some more time to work out the bugs you were saying. Does this mean it could take months for Leopard to come out due to another update to Tiger? Was this a planned release for Tiger anyway? Thanks for clarification.
