Open itunes and sell Ipods

by marksfk - 2/14/07 9:59 PM

Steve Jobs wrote a letter about a DRM-free future I wonder if this may mean an open itunes. I am not talking about licensing fairplay, which Jobs is currently not open to. What about publishing the DRM-free music that is available? Of course in the AAC format so Ipod sales wouldn't drop because few other players handle AAC. There are many Artists wanting to publishing DRM-free music. What about allowing other stores into itunes? So there would be a list of stores in itunes player to choose from beside the itunes store. The other stores would license an itunes store front develop kit, money for Apple, only Ipods connect to itunes so Ipod sales don't drop, itunes continues to be the best all in one 'it just works' system. Are Apple's hands tied by the big Labels that they can not open up their system?

I don't think they'll open iTunes, but....

I hope at some point we'll see straight-to-iTunes-publishing from within GarageBand or Logic. Now that the Apple Corp. suit has been settled and Apple Inc. owns the trademark they could publish tracks.

It would seem to me that, while Apple may not be "tied" by the RIAA on this issue, selling some DRM free tracks on iTunes might make them a little upset as they (and the MPAA) want their vision of copyright to be THE ONLY vision of copyright universally.

I don't think there's any technical hurdles to doing that, though. iTunes applies FairPlay on the client side once the track is downloaded, and the podcasts all seem to be un-protected MP3 files.

The business about licensing and being un-able to quickly patch seems to be a bit insincere. Here's an Ars Technica piece that goes into further detail about it: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070208-8799.html
