I just realized today that I do exactly what TMV make fun of: typing the name of a known site into Google rather than in the address bar.
I think this comes from being around before the address bar would do searches, and you had to type in the exact address. It really is easier for me to just type, say, "digg" into Google, then click on the first result, than to type the exact address into the address bar. Or at least it is no slower.
Just thought I would confess now that I realized I am "one of them"!
I don't think you are alone in doing this. I do what you described my self, and think that a lot of other "tech savy" people would do the same (I hope).
I think what they may be talking about is people that type the full url in to google, not just part.
I dont even remember the last time I used my address bar!
When I do it's because I'm trying to find some information out about the site and not to figure out how to get to the site.
It's normally when I'm trying to figure out who a retailer is and whether or not I'm going to get what I order from them...
I google everything, but I do it by typing in phrases in the firefox's address bar. For example, if I wanted to go to DC Sports Bog, I'm not gonna type in http://blog.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/. I'm just gonna put in "sports bog" and it'll do google's "I'm feeling lucky" thing and just go to the site.
Plus, it's definitely safer because I could misspell google.com and end up in some shady phishing site, but if i misspell google in the address bar it'll go to a google search page with "Did You Mean: google" on the top.
Stay proud peeps.
Hey... I also do that... and at least for me, I agree with the last post that says its probably due to having always used Google or Yahoo in the past before the address bar did an auto search... Maybe a Muscle Memory thing?
Whats also interesting is that even with the Search engine box in the new IE7, I still prefer to install the Google toolbar and use that search box instead of the built-in one.
I can't say it makes a difference in the speed to get the web site/result I want as I'd probably have to slow down to think about typing things into the address bar for a search....I believe that there's a huge number of "us" out there that do this so..... Vive la difference I say!
Do any of you not know how to use the Personal Toolbar in Firefox? It's a really nice feature. You can reach all of your favorite sites with just one click. I have folders and Live Bookmarks on my toolbar. It's great.
