Thoughts on any and all LCD's, DLP's, Plasma's!

by edoid - 2/15/07 5:57 PM In reply to: can't say specifically, but... by bderou2

I've been in the TV repair business for over 40 years and have seen it all. This new crap thats hot now will remain hot until you get a
repair bill which will probably amount to more than 50 to 70 percent
of the purchase price. Plasma being the most costly to repair if it can even be repaired. Have a nice day: Edoid

Olevia LCD's

by dmuder - 2/16/07 8:57 AM In reply to: can't say specifically, but... by bderou2

After extensive research on lcd's I finally bought a 27 inch Olevia and I love it because I saved a boat load of money and the unit has a great hd picture.
Syntax merge with Brillion. LG Phillips makes the panels for Syntax Brillion. Brillion managed of Sony's lcd production.
Another plus is that Syntax Brillion is located in Arizona.
I just purchased a 32 and 37 inch Olevia 3 series for $499.99 and $599.99 respectively. The hd pictures are awesome. Why spend hundreds if not a thousand more for a name brand.
Olevia also has a one year in home warranty. I just hope that the company keeps their prices low so I can buy their 1080p 7 series in the future.

Vizio Rocks!

by mkoehne - 2/20/07 10:19 AM In reply to: can't say specifically, but... by bderou2

I bought a Visio 37" LCD from Sam's Club about a month ago to use in my bedroom. It is an awesome television for the price. Contrary to some reports I've heard, the picture and sound are great. The connectivity is incredible - 2 HDMI and 2 component video, plus VGA - WOW! And the price - unbeatable! I have a 55" Sony in my living room. It's a great set. But if I had known about Visio two years ago when I purchased the Sony, I'd probably have 2 Visio TVs in my house now. I have connected my laptop to the VGA port. It is a better computer monitor than the Sony is. I don't have a cable box for the Visio set yet. But the SD picture is very, very good. The one HD channel I get OTA is fantastic. I can't say enough good things about this Visio set. I am telling all of my friends that they should strongly consider Visio for their next television purchase. I think I should work for Sam's or Costco - I could sell these things with absolutely no reservation.

no name tv's

by ratty50 - 2/13/07 9:22 PM In reply to: (NT) the same for Olevia or other "no-name" brands, please... by shawnlin

I think you would be wise to buy brand name, the no name brands use cheaper parts and have reliability issues. Old saying you get what you pay for comes to mind. I avoid them cheap ones because I have seen people buy them and when they die service is a nightmare. You can't go wrong with Sony, Panasonic etc they stand behind what they sell and they test their components for long life. I am an electrical engineer and have supplied some of these companies with components and I know how strict they are when it comes to their selection process. Hopes this helps

get what u pay for....

by bigvipervic - 2/13/07 10:17 PM In reply to: no name tv's by ratty50

First off let me say this. I agree totally that you get what u pay for. That being said here is what I paid for. I purchased the 42" Vizio flat plasma from costco last christmas (05) and paid 1399.00 (which was a great deal at the time) What I got was a 1080i t.v. that Cnet rated an 8 out of 10, a TWENTY year plasma life expectancy, a life time warranty from american express (since i used my amex for the purchase) and oh yea a lifetime warranty from costco. I could not even tell you what the warranty was from vizio (dont care). Now that being said, I am the less techy must have collector of my friends (who always have the latest and greatest, I can't afford to keep up) and they were amazed at the quality of picture (one friend so much so that he bought the 50" vizio for his Bar) In the 15 months that I have had my Vizio, I will honestly tell you that I did have a pixel go red about 6months into it. (Life time warranty thru costco no questions asked replacement.) Have had no problems with the replacement over the last 9months (and I have two children so that tv is always on!).(my buddy's 50" that has been hanging on a wall in a public bar for almost a year... looks as good as the day we hung it!) I have always tried to be smart with my money when I spend it, and in this case I believe I was. By the way, my other friend's sony plasma just took a dump (one month out of warranty) and it cost him almost 50% of the cost of the tv to have it repaired. Should have purchased that extended service plan but didn't because he felt it was too expensive. Oh yea that costco lifetime warranty... FREE

old school assessment - look at the warranty

by karport - 2/14/07 3:12 AM In reply to: get what u pay for.... by bigvipervic

The day's of assuming that quality is related to price is long gone.

If you look at the warranty and compare them between brands you will see that the name brands that sell of hundreds more do not offer a big difference in the warranty.

We have quite a few so called off brands at work and they rival the name brands in picture.

Regarding Vizo, it is high value and built by a company that has its roots in providing computer displays for large institutions.

Excellent points--I love my Vizio too

by armysteve - 2/14/07 4:22 AM In reply to: get what u pay for.... by bigvipervic

I bought a Philips 32 inch at Costco and took it back 9 months later to upgrade to a Vizio 37. We love the TV and it was $300 less than the Philips. Like the guy said, Costco took it back no questions asked. Just keep the box and the receipt and all of the manuals.

It may not be the best TV in the world, but it meets our needs and has a built in exit strategy.

Love that 37" LCD

by needlesxx - 2/15/07 2:52 PM In reply to: Excellent points--I love my Vizio too by armysteve

I had done the research for most 37 inch LCD on the market and some 42" inch LCD/Plasma. For the money none of the name brand sets could touch it. I use air HD and it is perfect. The only model that I might have purchased would have been a panisonic 42 inch but the price and picture quality could not be beat. Love to what football on it in HD.

Polaroid Big Screen

by exjrsygrl - 2/14/07 7:17 AM In reply to: get what u pay for.... by bigvipervic

We were at a store the other day and looking at the big screen, flat, digital, lcd's, etc. when we noticed a Polaroid. I have to tell you that we were very impressed by the picture, sound, contrast, color, etc. It was beautiful. It was a Polaroid 37" Widescreen LCD HDTV w/ Built-in Digital ATSC/NTSC Dual Tuner and cost $997. We wanted to buy it right then and there but we stopped and said we wanted to research it some more. Try to find anyone who might have one, check out consumer reports, etc. However, I still want to go back and get it.

If anyone has this or knows anyone who does, please let me know of your/their experience.

Thanks ever so much.

Lesser Known brands

by lhod40 - 2/14/07 8:00 AM In reply to: Polaroid Big Screen by exjrsygrl

This is an Intriguing Question. I Have heard some of the major brands flat pannel tv's giving a lot of trouble & a great reluctance of the major manufacturers to repair them . My self I bought an unknown brand Digital Camera, Although it opperates well enough , is not user friendly & backup service non Existant. I would personally consider very carefully even among the big names. Hope this helps .... Les Hodgson

Samsung TV

by lkw4 - 2/14/07 9:21 AM In reply to: get what u pay for.... by bigvipervic

I agree that name brand is no guarantee. My Samsung crashed three weeks out of warranty and the replacement cost was half the purchase price. Samsung did relent and pay for it but the fact remains it crashed at a high expense.

Great points!

by KTate70 - 2/14/07 6:59 PM In reply to: get what u pay for.... by bigvipervic

I agree 100% with your logic. With Costco's return policy, why would anyone choose to buy an expensive electronic item elsewhere?

Glad to hear you're happy with the Vizio unit. I'll likely be going with the same brand and size for my house in the next 4 to 6 months. I'm still going back and forth between plasma and LCD, however.

LOVE MY VIZIO

by naebanks - 2/18/07 5:00 AM In reply to: get what u pay for.... by bigvipervic

BACK IN THE 1960'S I BOUGHT A USED OFF BRAND "RICE BURNER" NAME DATSUN. IT RAN FOR OVER 15 YEARS BEFORE I SOLD IT TO SOME COLLEGE KIDS FOR ALMOST WHAT I HAD PAID FOR IT. PEOPLE HAD SMIRKS WHEN I BOUGHT AN ORANGE "HONDA" CAR IN THE LATE 1960'S
