What does the "i" in i___ mean?

by packjazz - 2/12/07 11:27 AM

A friend and I were having this discussion and came up with some possibilities, but we've never really heard of a difinitive answer.

What does the lowercase "i" before popular device names signify? It seems Apple uses it alot, iPod, iMac, iTunes...but either they started the trend or they went overboard with an existing trend, because there are other products and services such as iPaq, iVillage.com, an iRiver, which are not Apple products that use this designation.

Does it stand for something? Information? Internet? Increadibly annoying? Or is it just some random trend that's caught on for some weird reason?

At least the "e" makes sense. Electronic. I get it. But "i"? I haven't found an explanation for this yet.

Any ideas?

It's an Apple thing...

the first product was iMac. Apple declared the "i" in iMac to stand for "Internet". Then they followed with iPod. Other companies are just being copycats.

I dunno, that still doesn't make much sense...

Interface Pod? Interface River?

Maybe it's like a personal decleration. So "I am woman!" could be iWoman. Or "I am the Walrus goo goo g'joob" would be iWalrus G3!

iPods are noted for their user interface,

But, if the guy that used the expression first says it stands for internet, then that's what it stands for.

We don't have to agree that it makes sense, since you can used the mac computer without the internet, the same applies to ipod and iphone.
