Why do people keep comparing this war to the VHS/Beta battle ?? That was over thirty years ago, in a climate where only one could survive. It's a different planet now - far more complex, with a lot more to keep both formats alive. It'd much more realistic to compare it to SACD vs DVD-A, or DVD-R vs DVD+R, all of which are still around.
When the war started, I was totally impartial - I was just happy to see HD coming to the masses. In time, I've really turned against Blu-Ray.
Having said all this, I actually think BOTH fomats will survive and coexist, a little like what's happened with DVD-A and SACD. The Warner hybrid discs, support from Windows Vista / Mac OSX Leopard, and dual-format players like the one LG has announced, will help ensure this.
However HD-DVD is simply the better format because...
1. Most Blu-Ray releases only feature DVD-quality Dolby Digital, whereas Dolby Digital Plus and TrueHD are the norm on HD-DVD.
2. Too many Blu-Ray titles released with inferior out-dated MPEG2 compression, even to this day. Sure this isn't a big deal when the source material isn't up to scratch, but when it is, VC-1 will simply give you less compression at the same bit-rate. No debate.
3. Blu-Ray is Region-coded... HD-DVD isn't.
4. Blu-Ray is too damn expensive for non die-hards. HD-DVD is much more accessible, with players around half the price, and the X-Box drive at US$200.
5. HD-DVD has a better name!! It's DVD...but HD, get it? Blu-Ray needs explaining. (and what's with Blu-Ray's marketing...."Beyond High Definition"???)
6. It seems HD-DVD is the first to make a triple layer disc (51 Gigabytes). Blu-Ray is yet to get there. So Blu-Ray's capacity advantage has been squandered.
7. HD-DVD is more often superior in the extras department. Eg Mission Impossible III.
8. Once again.... HD-DVD is cheaper!! When you consider that Blu-Ray isn't superior in ONE SINGLE ASPECT, it seems ridiculous that you should be paying more for it !
Immediate sales results will still depend on release of "killer aps". A-List titles like Lord of the Rings, Matrix, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Bond, etc will have a HUGE impact on sales of either format. So this is what we need to see more of !
With everything you said the blu-ray horse is 50 yards in front of the HD-DVD horse on the race track, with the HD-DVD horse losing its stamina and the blu-ray horse gaining stamina as if the jocky gave it a boost of steroids.
I don't know what audio and video codecs have been used on the current releases of blu-ray and I'm not going to look at every blu-ray movie description to find out. I don't even know if the movies have that infomation on the boxes or in the desciption on the selling site. I do know if you look at at the specification of the blu-ray discs you will find that the codecs for video and audio that blu-ray can use matches HD-DVD on everyone of them. Check Wikipedia.
It may be cheaper to produce the HD-DVD discs but whats the point if the sales aren't there?
Not targeting you deliberately. Movies that are killer apps to me are when its a AAA title that is exclusive to one format. The AAA titles you mention, Lord of the Rings trilogy, not been announced yet but its distributed by Warner so it would be on both formats. Matrix Trilogy by Warner is going to be released on both formats. Indiana Jones is distibuted by Paramount, not been announced but would come on both formats. Star wars all 6 episodes is by Fox so if it was to be released it would be a Blu-ray exclusive and thats one of the biggest movie franchise of all time never to be seen on HD-DVD. All 21 Bond movies and the announced 22nd Bond movie for 2008 are/will be distributed by MGM, another exclusive blu-ray release.
You have to face facts with all the movies coming out on Hi-Def formats this year, the list will be bigger for blu-ray.
the question is not 'why would you back this format?' The question is 'why would you back a format that will miss out on so many titles?'
IT's a tough one this HD-DVD and Blue-ray. I have both and altough Blue-ray has more movies HD-DVD has way better picture quality.
I think that we are stuck with both Blue-ray and HD-DVD unless Disney jumps on HD-DVD then blue-ray is dead in the water. When movies come out for both HD-DVD and Blue-ray I always get the HD-DVD verison cause it looks better and the only thing holding HD-DVD from winning is there lack luster line up. plain and simple to me.
Long live HD-DVD
I went to the Comet store in London the other day and I was stunned by the quality of HD DVD movie on toshiba DVD player and on Toshiba LCD TV.
I have seen Bluray movies on samsung player /panasonic player on panasonic Plasma as well as on sharp LCD TV in local Costco.
The image quality is not as good as on toshiba HD DVD.
In fact the Blu ray movie picture quality is similar to or marginally better than the upscaling DVD players using the 720 or 1080 resolution modes.
It may be due to the same Mpeg2 recording format for both the blu ray as well as the standard DVD discs.
It is not worth to Buy Blu ray for marginal improvement
HD DVD for me and I would buy and support HD DVD
Personally I don't dig in that controversy Thinking and I will not be carry out Emotionally with something that is already settle.
Since LG had manufacture a HD-DVD/Blue Ray Reader there is only a small step for manufacturing a PC Reader/Writer of those 2 types of media. And has same that was for the DVD+R and DVD-R both types will co-exist in the future. The only difference will be in the average use of one type over the other type of media.
In the battle of DVD+R and DVD-R the type of media that was the less restrictive and still is the more universal today win the Battle. Sorry for Sony lovers but it is not that Company that had the privilege to run all users habits until now.
In my concern, with this present war HD-DVD/Blue Ray, we will have to wait many years to definitively see which one will take over the other. The DVD-R is not obsolete yet and just like for the VHS it will take more than 10 years to see that type of media be replaced by the new one. Except it will take more than 10 years for everyone to replace there DVD-R (PC-TV Units) for the new HD-DVD one.
Since there is nothing real to motivated the change (except the powder eyes) and because everyone will have to upgrade there TV or Monitor and Sound system to be fully compatible with that new type of technology lots of water will pass underneath the bridge before someone could say that HD-DVD had win the War.
Now, if there is a war there are some victims out of it and I won’t be among them dashing to the store to give my money to those manufactures for there improvement benefices on future improved new models and so on.
If it took 10 years to move from VHS to DVD in stores it is not the case at home. I still use my VHS to view movies that I own and some time that I rent to a Video Rental dispenser were I live. I wont consider the new technology until I’m rich enough to afford it and because I wont have the choice.
I know that it is not the right position to compare DVD to HD-DVD/Blue Ray has it was with the VHS and DVD. In my concern it will take a longer period of time before the passage to the new technology will happen.
Blu-ray may not be superior to HD but it has the market with DVDs and very shortly with players that the average person can afford. Sony is making a move for the market as they never have before and they are not going to lose this one as they did the Beta/tape market. Troy
Life is full of changes, some good, some bad.
Regardless of the HD-DVD and Blu-ray battle it is good to have COMPETITION. Generally progress is made and something new will hopefully surface for the better.
Both formats are Winners and whichever one prevails the longest
will be short lived cause there will be a New Successor at some point.
Nothing lasts forever.
I'm not going to Challenge anyones opinion.
All is fair in Love and War.
Use what's best suits you and support it and live by your decision.
If everyone starts jumping off a cliff ... are you going too?
Are you one of the Mc Coys , Smith or Jones and have to have everything before the other guy has it ?
Sure , if ya have the money but after awhile what good does it do for you?
How about buying both products and giving them a fair shake!!!!!
Remember how expensive an audio CD player was when they first came out? Well, just wait a while and watch the prices on HD DVD and Blu-ray drop to about $100.00.
I think we have already noticed a price-coming-down.
But the real question is will it be Blu-Ray or HD players coming down and for what reason.
If the price comes down on one of them and not the other, well then, I think the one whose prices are coming down is the loser and they are trying to get rid of their product. If they both come down equally then the war is still going on as the Beta/VHS war continued for some years.
All in all, since both products are so good and both sides want money which runs the whole show, lets have someone come out with a play that plays both formats and that the player be inexpensive. This player will sell by the tens of thousands and at that point who could care about the HD/Blu Ray war?
Ummm, maybe that is the business I should be in. I surely would invest in such a company right now. Show me a product and give me a decent price and I will put my money down right now.

I don't know how many people know this as its already 2 days old. A major retailer in Australia, JB Hi-Fi has commented that they will only be stocking Blu-ray format HD movies and entertainment.
Taken from IGN
"Blu-ray is the only format that has the ability to tell the whole story, with the most comprehensive offering on the market. With seven of Hollywood's leading studios accounting for the vast majority of 2006's home video sales, among the 170 plus companies globally that support Blu-ray Disc, it makes sense that content will be king when it comes to Blu-ray," commented JB Hi-Fi Marketing Director Scott Browning.
How many more will follow suit around the world?
