yea but

by bamf06 - 2/9/07 4:42 PM In reply to: What about the larger audience? by gudguy

You have to ask yourself. How much of this audience has bought a DVD player in the last 3 years? The ones out there now looking to buy Hidef players are the ones who know about these formats and are willing to upgrade. At this time they too are in a position where they don't know which to go for blu-ray or HD-DVD? I don't think they'll choose HD-DVD just because its cheaper, because if its cheap they want then they can buy a PS3 which includes a free games console, interent and Linux if you want. The only others who would be looking to buy a HiDef player are the ones who have recently had their DVD player blow up. Then ther store assistant tells them about these new hidef players, so they go for the cheapest one not really knowing what the're buing into.
PS2 did help the DVD and PS3 will help blu-RAY
Blu-ray disc production will also become cheaper when it become mainstream. Becasue of blu-ray disc sales and PS3 sales to HD-DVD the porn industry will see that where the money is and jump ship. It all makes sence.

We shall see ...

You made a very good and valid point. However, we see that as time goes by that the popularity of both types of HD DVD playeers/recorders is becoming increasingly mainstream. It's becoming more common place to buy them.

PS 3 is a reason why some are switching to the HD DVD formats, but many are not interested in playing video games. And who knows what will happen when Microsoft unveils their answer to the Sony PS3?

We shall see.

Post 183 of 238

I see your point.

by bamf06 - 2/15/07 1:16 PM In reply to: We shall see ... by gudguy

I'm wondering though of how many people bought a PS2 years ago just for the DVD player and they was never interested in games? How many people who was not interested in games knew there were cheaper DVD players on the market but had someone in the family who could benifit from the games so they got the PS2? How many of these PS2 owners who only bought the PS2 for a DVD player and then gradualy got into playing the games.
Its like you say that there will be people willing to upgrade to watching hidef movies but not interested in the gaming but they may find because buying a hi-def player is a family decision for many that someone in the family can benifit from the PS3. How many families in Europe and Americas will have one member of the family who likes games? I would say that it would be a high percentage of families.
By the time people in the masses are buying hi-def players, the store shelves will be full of blu-ray players and the DVD stores will have wall to wall blu-ray movies to sell and to rent.

HD War Time

by MegaXtreme - 2/8/07 5:49 AM In reply to: Who do you predict will win the HD format war? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I don't even own an HD TV, but I truly believe HD DVD will win the war. This is mainly because Blu-ray is only developed by Sony. That means, Sony will be the ones making the players, and Sony's product quality is terrible (the PS2 being great proof). Also, Blu-ray's demo videos are of poor quality, with blurry visuals that really show me that my VHS's are better. HD DVD has more companies making players for them, and they seem more affordable. Also, the PS3 costs $500-$600 dollars and plays the stupid things. The fact that Blu-ray is so expensive has kept many people from buying a PS3, which its built-in Blu-ray player is the reason it's so expensive.

HD-DVD will .... PORN PORN PORN

by michaelcvoigt - 2/8/07 6:04 AM In reply to: Who do you predict will win the HD format war? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The secret underbelly of this war is that fact that Porn is going to be on HD-DVD. That will sell a lot of players.... !

I don't understand how Sony is keeping the price of Blu-Ray lower. Every Blu-Ray cost soo much to make, and all the providers make less money because they have to PAY Sony a percent of every sale. How much longer can Sony pay to keep prices down ???

Plus how much is Sony paying in advertising, I see so many ads.... with their investment is it AMAZING that HD-DVD is doing as well as it is =)

For you Blu-Ray lovers enjoy the fact that every title you buy takes money from the film maker and puts in SONY's fat little pocket.... PROFIT PROFIT PROFIT

you must be crazy

by bamf06 - 2/8/07 7:35 AM In reply to: HD-DVD will .... PORN PORN PORN by michaelcvoigt

I think you are crazy if you choose to buy a player based on whether that format will have porn. Porn DVD's are expensive and not worth the money. So how much will a porn on HD-DVD will cost? First it will drive the prices down for porn DVD's and this will encourage people to buy the DVD instead of the more expensive HD-DVD. Porn in HD? I can understand if you want to watch your favourite movie in HD, or a nature program and sport in HD, but I can't understand why anyone would want to watch a porn in HD especially when you watch them once, wak off to them and then discard them.
This is the reason why the porn industry is so big. Not becasue the majority of people are buying it, far from it. It's because porn movies are so expensive, some retailing up to $50 and you get bored of the porn so quickly making you buy another, then another, then another. So its the same crowd buying DVD's one after the other at high prices.
Ask yourself this question, could both formats survive on the porn industry alone? I think not because both formats will never become mainstream and will stay very expensive. Both formats can be around for a long time with the film industries backing and without the porn industry.
I just read an article about growth of porn movie sales and this is dated Dec 2005. There was a prediction that next year (2006) the porn industry could reach $12.8 billion. Now it didn't state whether this was including downloaded movies from the net which I would imagine that there are more bought downloads than there are people buying from retail. On another article titled 'DVD sales Reshaping Film Industry' It says that home DVD movie sales hit $25 billion and that was dated Oct 2003. I had a look but didn't find, but what do you think DVD movie sales would be at now? There are so many more DVD movie sales than there are DVD porn movie sales.

After saying all that I like to tell you that Vivid anounced a few weeks ago that 'Debbie Does Dallas … Again' will be released on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

For the poster who said Sony are the only ones who are making blu-ray players, you are so wrong. All the leading companies are making blu-ray players. If you were asked to wright down as many company names as you can who are the top brands (and yes Sony is one of them, just because of the Playstation success and your a fanboy of another console) you will find that nearly all the names you written down are suporting blu-ray and are making blu-ray players. We're talking Panasoic who are still the biggest electronic company in the world ahead of Sony who rank 2nd, we have Samsung, Pioneer, Philips another high quality company, Sharp, Hitatchi, Mitsubishi, I think LG do both and there are more. You anlso have Apple, Dell and HP. I only found the small list. With HD-DVD you have Toshiba, err LG. Unless your loyal to Toshiba I think you would be looking at other brands that make blu-ray.
What about the film studios? lets see New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and Warner Bros said they would support HD-DVD back in nov 2004. Since then New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros decidd to also to support blu-ray while Universal Studios remains the only studios to stay exclusive to HD-DVD (which will proove to be te wrong choice eventually, that's if they're not already thinking about jumping ship) While Sony Pictures, MGM, Disney and 20th Century Fox have all exclusively backed Blu-Ray. Don't forget that Sony, Disney and Fox are currently the biggest film studios in that order.

So with all the best electronic companies backing blu-ray, the best studios backing blu-ray with HD-DVD only having Universal Studios as an exclusive. Just think of all your favourite movies that will never be released on HD-DVD and think of all those future rentals that will never be on HD-DVD. We have people in the industry predicting blu-ray to be the winners, blu-ray is already winning and in the future there could be 100 million PS3's and I doubt HD-DVD will ever reach 10 million even with help from Microsofts HD-DVD add-on.
And you say HD-DVD will win because of porn? Crazy, or is it you know blu-ray will win but you don't want to accept it because Sony is backing it, its in the PS3 and your really just a 360 fanboy who doesn't want blu-ray to be successful because it will help PS3 to be successful.

So far with the blu-ray vs HD-DVD. Its like 2 football teams trying to win the championship. blu-ray football team has the best first 11 that money can buy and HD-DVD football teams first 11 are a bunch of drunken regects, which team do you think will win the championship?

scratch resistant

by bamf06 - 2/8/07 7:43 AM In reply to: you must be crazy by bamf06

A post I read somewhere in here mentions about the damages that blu-ray disc will have. I have just read about the hard coating on the discs on Wikipedia. It says that a coating was developed by TDK and is called "Durabis". It allows you to can clean the blu-ray disc with a tissue. I know using a tissue to clean a DVD will leave light scratches all over the disc. According to Samsung Optical technical manager Chas Kalsi, the coating is said to successfully resist "wire wool scrubbing"
Videos show on Youtube people putting this to the test. The results seem to support Kalsi entirely with the disc undergoing extensive steel wool scrubbing and vicious attacks with pens and pizza cutters and still achieving normal playback on the PS3 console.
So that should put an end to the bull about blu-ray discs being fragile.

Reason why I mentioned it is ...

by gudguy - 2/8/07 9:27 AM In reply to: you must be crazy by bamf06

The reason why I mentioned that the porn industry often is the deciding factor in which format will prevail is due to its influence. Now, I don't know how much porn DVD's cost, nor do I care. And I really couldn't care less as to its quality. However, it has been reported that the porn industry made 12 BILLION dollars in profits last year. It's a huge elephant in the DVD arena, which refuses to be ignored. Those are just the facts. What can we do ...

you don't hit on the biggest point, Sony gets all the $$$

by michaelcvoigt - 4/19/07 8:37 AM In reply to: you must be crazy by bamf06

Good post, very detailed.

Two things:
1. I don't buy porn, but I still believe 1080 porn will be a big seller, and you cannot download that detail over the web. Consumers are always going to want higher quality, and they will pay -- porn included.

2. IF Blu-Ray wins, Sony gets mega-rich $$$$ , what is so good about that? Wouldn't you rather the movie companies not have to pay a portion to Sony?

Post 191 of 238

my answer

by bamf06 - 4/22/07 7:26 PM In reply to: you don't hit on the biggest point, Sony gets all the $$$ by michaelcvoigt

1. I don't by porn either, there are so many ways to download it for free, he, he. Maybe not 1080p but HD porn is widely available for download on the web and well before porn on HD-DVD or blu-ray. I would say that 1080p porn isn't important. 1080p televisions only have a small penetration rate in Europe and N. America. It was just reported that there is I think 29% of people’s homes in NA that have HDTV. Out of the 29% how many are going to be buying HD porn to how many will be buying HD movies?
There is no doubt that there are some that will buy porn in HD but with many critics saying HD-DVD and blu-ray isn't necessary so I can only imagine that porn buyers will be even more sceptical towards HD porn.
DVD's will be out selling HD movies for years to come and the many buyers who buy porn at retail will be choosing DVD. By the time the HD format exceeds DVD there will be only one HD format available and porn will go to the winner.

2. The movie studios will have to pay royalties to someone and I rather it be Sony than Toshiba. The reason I choose Sony is not only becasue I prefere their products over Toshiba but becasue of the Playstion brand. Sony pumping money back into products alone is good enough (Sony seem to spend more in R&D than anyone else take a look how much went into blu-ray and the Cell: BE. Also SOny was given a Guinea pig from the Emperor of Japan many years ago for Sony's efforts in R&D and the amount of money they spend to come up with new tech.) but Sony will have more money to pump into gaming hardware and software production which benefits me as I buy many Playstaion brand products and games.

And let us not overlook ...

by gudguy - 2/8/07 12:57 PM In reply to: HD-DVD will .... PORN PORN PORN by michaelcvoigt

And let us not overlook the HUGE elephant sitting in the corner. I have heard that the adult entertainment industry made anastounding $12 BILLION last year!!! It's hard to ignore an industry like that. If the industry definitely weighs in with HD-DVD, it may very well be the deciding factor. Porn is a legitimate industry nowadays. These companies are listed on the NYSE. Most of the investors are now from mainstream America (wherever that is). The companies are now legal and have very ordinary and legitimate sounding names. It's just business! It's all about the ROI.

where does the $12 bill come from?

by bamf06 - 2/8/07 6:44 PM In reply to: And let us not overlook ... by gudguy

Its the $12 billion porn industry. I don't think that its $12 billion in DVD sales alone. The indusrt includes the internet. The paysites where users are buying to download or users are paying for a monthly membership. This method is cheaper than DVD purchases and is easier and more descreet to get. Plus there is alot of free porn about on the net. So how much of this $12 billion industry is from DVD sales? There is the argument about porn helping the next format becasue of this $12 billion industry when all along DVD sales could possibly be a small part of this $12 billion. None of yet know so its time to look around more and find what are the DVD porn sales for 2006.

Post 194 of 238

Good point.

by gudguy - 2/9/07 8:04 AM In reply to: where does the $12 bill come from? by bamf06

Actually, I haven't thought of it much before. However, I guess you must be correct! I know that some internet sites charge to access porn. Another reader pointed out that many are now downloading movies and video clips. I didn't know about that avenue of commerce. I guess I had not really thought out the various aspects of the porn industry. Thanks for stating your point.

Both will co-exist - I am a HD DVD XBOX 360 owner

by josecaos1 - 2/8/07 7:58 AM In reply to: Who do you predict will win the HD format war? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I think both formats will co-exits in different markets. You bet Japan is going to keep their Blue Ray while the US will maintain their HD DVD. Both are backed up by huge corporations and I do not see any of them pulling the plug on their format. I have seen both, HD DVD movies and Blue Ray movies... well the difference is ZERO; both are great and that is the end to it. HD DVD has the edge right now because there are more HD DVD players in the market and not too many Blue Ray players. So the only thing to work on this is marketing and product availability. The demand for the product is already here, the only question is how versatile the product is going to be? Is it only for your home entertainment or will you be able to find it on your laptop or desktop...and when?
