So far..

by bamf06 - 2/10/07 7:00 PM In reply to: What are you talkinh about???? by brinda1

Toshiba have been the only ones that have released stand alone HD-DVD players and Microsoft released the HD-DVD add-on which was reported last month that sales have reached 100,000 which isn't that many especially when you consider the price. Fox annouced they are shifting 70,000 blu-ray movies a week and that number is rising rapidily. VidaBox announced the first Dual HD player that will playback both formats and at CES2007 LG announced the LG BH100 hybrid Blu-ray and HD DVD standalone set-top player. Apart from some laptops being fitted with HD-DVD drives I don't know of any stand-alone players coming out from other consumer electronic companies.

Just like to mention about the 3 layer 51gb disc Toshiba said that there is no guarantee that triple layer discs will work in existing players as it was not part of the original mandatory specifications.
For for that posters infomation eho talked about blu-ray not acheiving this. TDK has already a 6 layer 200gb blu-ray disc.

Blu-ray can have MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) / VC-1 / MPEG-2 video codecs according to specifications, which is the same as HD-DVD. Its up to the studios to use those codecs.

What's interesting that I found that blu-ray prices by the gb is cheaper to produce than HD-DVD. Blu-ray cost $0.47 per Gb and HD-DVD cost $0.60 per Gb. Its the extra 10gb that makes blu-ray a little more expensive.

Valid points.

You make some valid points.

Still the question remains:
Which format will the movie viewing public choose?

I think...

by bamf06 - 2/15/07 1:44 PM In reply to: Valid points. by gudguy

I think the movie public are already starting to choose looking at the sales of blu-ray movies and its because of PS3. It won't stop there because there will be so many more PS3's to be sold, remember there's going to be 1 million PS3's in Europe in 5 weeks time, how long will it take for HD-DVD to reach those numbers in the same time period and that's including the add-on for 360? How many years will it take for the add-on to even reach 1 million sales globaly?
The rest of the movie public will invest in blu-ray because of those numbers.

Sony Win a Media Format?

by mnbulldog - 2/7/07 6:05 PM In reply to: Who do you predict will win the HD format war? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Let's see - Sony's great media formats over the years:

Betamax - DEAD
MiniDisc - DEAD
Memory Stick - Might as well be dead (mostly only in Sony products and no where near the market penetration of competing formats)

Jeez - I wonder who will win.

Guarantee you HD-DVD sticks around if you can only get porn on HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray. Whether you want to admit it or not - telling the porn industry no - is the kiss of death for Sony. Just look at the history of Betamax.

(NT) I totally agree with you.

the question is?

by bamf06 - 2/7/07 6:25 PM In reply to: Who do you predict will win the HD format war? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The question is how many people will own a PS3 and how many will own a HD-DVD player including the add-on for the 360 in 2 years from now? Realistically we all know the answer to this one if we ignore our biased side. If you had no choice but to bet your car or your house on it which one would you pick to win the format war. The answer is blu-ray it has to be, its backed by the best electronic companies and backed by the leading movie studios. If you want a high quality next-gen high-def player you will find that the best brands in the business make blu-ray players and Toshiba are the best HD-DVD makers out there, wow.
Now back to my first question. I beleive there will by so many more PS3's out there than HD-DVD players in 2 years. So you may ask they will buy a PS3 for the games. Well surely all PS3 owners with HD TV's will watch blu-ray movies on their PS3's and surely many people will see that buying a PS3 as a cheaper blu-ray player is a better option than buying a HD-DVD player especially now that blu-ray movie sales are beating HD-DVD movie sales at a 3:1 ratio and that will continue to get bigger for blu-ray. For the PS3 owners who feel they don't want to buy blu-ray movies, surely you rent? and why would you rent DVD movies when you can choose to rent the blu-ray version? and I reckon that you won't want to go back to DVD once you've seen hi-def any more than you would want to go back to VHS.

I agree with you, but ...

by gudguy - 2/8/07 12:15 PM In reply to: the question is? by bamf06

I agree with you, but I also believe that there is a HUGE audience (mostly older people), who don't care about video games at all. They just want to watch movies, etc. Due to the affordability, I believe these consumers will be interested in buying the cheaper HD-DVD players/recorders and the respective format DVD's. What do you think?

PS3 with no games

by spaceace1974 - 2/11/07 1:10 PM In reply to: the question is? by bamf06

I own a Xbox 360 and the HD-DVD player which out performs blue-ray on the PS3.

I brought a PS3 just for the movies, I don't even own a PS3 game. But whenever a movie comes out for HD-DVD and Blue-ray I always get the HD-DVD verison cause the quality is so much better.

Sony can't rely on PS3 to move movies but HD-DVD can rely on the Xbox HD-DVD cause people who buy them are getting them for the movies, not games. For the record I have quite a few friends who own a PS3 and have no blue-ray movies so Blue-ray can't count every PS3 sold as being on there side.

I hope HD-DVD wins myself but it's a waiting game and more than likely both will survive.

Don't beleive

by bamf06 - 2/11/07 8:04 PM In reply to: PS3 with no games by spaceace1974

I find it hard to beleive that you bought a PS3 for the movies even though you have the 360 and a HD-DVD add-on. I put it to you that you are a 360 fanboy you has a hatred for Sony because of the success of the Playstation and you maybe was a Sega fanboy in the past.

Blu-ray Will win

by adonn78 - 2/7/07 6:48 PM In reply to: Who do you predict will win the HD format war? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Sure HD-DVD is Cheaper both to produce, author, and replicate. The drives are cheaper as well. But Blu-ray has got the storage. 25GB per a layer vs 15. that is 30% more storage. Get me a whole Season of lost in HD on 1 or 2 Doubnle layered Discs with all the features on a Blu-ray disc and I will be a happy man. 6 DVD's is jsut too many. its inside every PS3 and there should be a PS3 price drop within the next few months. And By Summer time it should be easier and cheaper to produce Blu-ray because there will be more plants online. The only thing that Sony has to do is drop prices and to give out some free authoring kits to the Porn and big movie studios. Imagine a whole season of Anime on one disc.

Blu-ray will win? thats just Poppycock.

by grand brochet - 2/7/07 7:03 PM In reply to: Blu-ray Will win by adonn78

Look i have spent less then 5 minuits researching this topic, and even most of the post's on here are all about the Adult Entertianment's accecss to Blu-ray, but what about this fact i hear aobut that if you scratch blu-ray you can not repair it like you can with an HDTV disk? you really think you can pack 30% more information into a little disk with out sacrafacing something? so your going to go and spend more on the product, have no accsess to porn and when you fumble it and drop it on your flore your screwed? ya, i'm totaly going with HDTV on this one...even if it dosnet go, at least you can keep your disks in good shap..hehe O and this has nothing to do with my Minidisk player *curses under breath* waist of $$$ that was :S

What about the larger audience?

by gudguy - 2/8/07 12:23 PM In reply to: Blu-ray Will win by adonn78

I understand that most of the video gamers will want the superior Blu-ray format. I also understand that many computer users will favor the superior Blu-ray format.

However, there's a HUGE audience who just wants to watch movies. I believe that most of this vast audience will opt for the cheaper HD-DVD playerws/recorders and the respective media.

What do you think?
