I bought a Gateway laptop with Vista premium loaded. It seemed a little sluggish and was told to reinstall the OS with the OEM disk that came with the computer. That was a big help! (got rid of the preloaded junk files in startup). Anyway, the harddrive on the laptop had a 4200 RPM harddrive on it. (100 gig). Would a 54 RPM hard drive be noticibly faster? I can find one for around $70.00
But that is just my opinion.
The short answer for that little a difference (5400 vs 4200) is No, not very noticeable. If you have fairly HDD intensive-applications (such as ones that are constantly writing data to or retrieving data from databases) you will actually detect a bit of a difference. Even there, though, the real difference comes from the HDD cache, not always its spindle speed.
You didn't say how much RAM you had. All the pages will say that 512 Megabytes is enough, but it is just barely so. 1 Gigabyte (1024 Megabytes) is a better option for Vista. If you don't have that much, find out if you can upgrade.
Good Luck!
Louie
I do have a gig of ram. I am reasonably happy with the computer now that I got rid of all the startup stuff. There were a lot of opinions reaming this laptop because of the speed of the hard drive. But for what I paid for it, I think it's great and was just wondering about the hard drive. Think I'll keep as is. Thanks, again
