We are not exchanging ignorant comments and also , when someone says that a program is big conspiracy, or whatever I try to lay that to rest as to not scare off a newbie who may indeed benefit from a good free firewall. So before playing the "hero," I am well capable of seeing when something is going no where and was going to lay this one to rest anyway.

Did someone put a gun to your head and force you to read this sub-discussion we were having? If not, you only have yourself to blame for reading it.
FWIW, I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. I'm trying to get people to question assumptions they may have, or look at things from a different perspective. Whether or not anyone changes their opinions because of it is beside the point. The important thing is that people ask questions. It's the only way you can be sure you've made the right decision.
I do agree with your very last post to STEU or whatever it is. At least we were being civil about it and I also wasn't trying to be harsh on your point of view it just came out that way so I apologize for that. Any way, if they think we were ARGUING they haven't seen other posts where there are more !!!!!! than anything.
Take care, Paul
If you don't need a new 'puter now, you soon will, after using all that stuff.
Keep it simple with:
AVG (free)
Ad-Aware (free)
Windows XP SP2 Firewall, Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, sfc /scannow
While ok advice, Windows XP firewall isn't the best to keep for a main firewall, it's better than nothing and great if you do a fresh install and need to get updates quickly, etc..
Disk cleanup won't get everything you may want to clean and something as simple and not resource consuming as Ccleaner does a great job.
sfc/scannow isn't an every day tool and many times you need an original XP disk for sfc if files need repairing say if Dllcahe is corrupt. There are many other issues like making sure Dllcache folder and other protected system files are unhidden, sometimes an OEM pc won't have enough info stored in the cache to do a repair and you end up needing the disk, which in an OEM , typically won't work. Also sfc \scannow can take a loooonng time.

Different strokes. I'm happy to testify that I prefer Windows Firewall, by far, over Zone Alarm Free and Pro.
As with Norton, Zone Labs has been trying to do too much. AFAIC, they're both now frequent failures.
And, regarding cleaners, something stronger often takes something extra out of one's 'puter. No thanks, I'll hold the "bigger guns" in reserve. They're hardly things I'd suggest to people before they have a serious problem. Using them prophylacticly is playing with fire.
Finally, if sfc /scannow is taking too long for you, you're 'puter's got a few issues.
What programs are you referring to that are considered "bigger guns"? Just curious.
Paul
I bet you are.
I can tell you won't be civil about this as I was wondering so I may point out programs that don't take up resources and aren't "big guns". Since this would simply get off topic, I won't bother , you have your opinion, that's fine, i'll leave it at that.

I just want to thank everyone for your advice. I eliminated about half of the spyware programs and only have 3 gaurds running(spyware gaurd, spyware blaster, and my anti virus.) I also installed ZA. Making all the changes you all recomended has actually made my computer run faster! I was too bogged down with all of these"wonderful"programs. Goes to show, good things are good in moderation. No more overkill for me.I've learned a very good lesson. Thanks to all for your help and advice....Maggie
Get an Apple Mac. Then you can spend your time doing things you want to do with your computer, not worrying about staving off infections and hacker attacks.
I switched a year ago and don;t have any ant-virus, no anti spam, no internet protection, adaware, no spybot, no Windows Beta defender.
3 Macs, a great computing experience, and not a spyware virus care on any of them.
still waiting for a problem on my Mac.
Meantime Vista is worm ridden before it even went on sale..
How much longer won't it last?
this if that's truly what you think.
