I just retired my Acer to the family room for the new HP Pavilion Media Center. It came with Vista premium, I am just setting it up and moving things over now so I really can't say what I think of it as a whole yet. My last OS was XP and I kept running IE 6 as I had nothing but issues with 7 so I avoided the upgrade. Whether it be Acer or HP I see they give me all the same option choices for things like the Norton, VOIP, eBay and providers, I thought when I got the Acer that they may be offer them specially, but now I see HP offers the same ones too.I would have liked to see an option for Firefox/Mozilla as that is the one I use, I only go into IE when I need to download templates and stuff from Microsoft office.
Vista seems OK so far, but already it has gone unresponsive twice, which concerns me b/c this is the second HP in a month, the first went total blue screen day 3 so it had to go back, I am keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't go south.
I am opting out of the Vista hype. Primarily for the costs of upgrading my hardware to MINIMAL Vista preferences is prohibitive for me. The secondary reason is, I like WinXP and the way I do security on my machine. The third reason is I am leery of M$'s anti-piracy efforts and how this will limit my (in my very humble and exceedingly unlearned opinion mind you) "fair use" of the product. If I buy Vista for one computer then decide to put it in another new computer, they should let me do this. Yet all I see is I am buying Vista for ONE single solitary machine. The fourth reason is it does not seem to me to be that much better than WinXP, just more of a resource hog.
So I am staying with WinXP and will go to Linux when M$ decides to shaft all the non-Vista users in the cosmos.

...become a drooling, brain-dead blithering idiot! Puh-leeze. It tokk all of ...ummm...3 YEARS and 4 reloads ON EACH MACHINE to get XP working for more than 60 days at a time! I am pretty computer literate but this is NOT the "hobby" I want to spend time with! Thanks, but no thanks! And since my laptop lost it's hard drive (can you say lousy operating system that could not even shut the PC down after memory was hogged and the buffer was full of XP garbage!) I think I WILL spend the time to finally lean Linux. Hmmm...multiply that by the 10 XP machines that I own/operate and Microslut can kiss my A** goodbye! Oh, BTW-the OS-X on the 3 Macs I own were loeaded about 4 YEARS ago...not one single problem that took more than 10 minutes to fix....do the math!
No Vista for me either. Sorry. I'm fine with XP as it stands. I don't need a bigger operating system taking away resources from my programs. I could care less for pretty twinkle toes graphics and garbage I don't need to run my stuff. I simply need an operating system that will run my programs and sit quietly. That's it. I'm tired of Microtrash trying to be the sh*t all the time when they can't fix what they already have!
... and there is no coming back. (Pun intended)
There is really only way to go if you want to upgrade to VISTA HOME PREMIUM (aka XP Media Edition with service pack 3) if your computer does not have a VISTA ready sticker on it and you don't get the free Vista upgrade CD that they were giving out since Fall 2006. Rather than pay $150 - $300 for the operating system and more $$$$ for new parts and software, plus your investment in time or price of professional installation, plus the risk of crash or damage during installation. Here is my recommendation:
Go to the special offer on the DELL Website at:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/odg_emaildesktops?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
For $819 buy the C521 with preinstalled VISTA home premium, an AMD 3800 dual core processor, a 20 inch digital widescreen monitor, a 16x DVD+/-RW Drive (which burns both CD’s and DVDs), a 250GB Hard Drive and more.
Then, you get the new 20" widescreen digital monitor you already wanted, plus all new parts plus a full year warranty! It will arrive at your house in about 3 days.
How simple is that ?! (HP probably has a similar deal but I'm not checking)
I have no intention to upgrade to Vista, as I am slowly shedding computers. I had 4 in December: I dumped the broken one, and sold 1 (Both XP) in December. I now have only a Vaio running XP MCE and a Powerbook with OS X.
My Powerbook is faster and does fewer weird things (random programs taking up 50% of memory, among other things). Also my school employs 3rd party security access software which is a PITA to use. Naturally, Macs are exempt from this program since they don't really pose a security threat. ![]()
I plan on getting rid of my MCE Vaio at the end of the school year.
I just do not see the point of buying an expensive version (whether Ultimate or Premium) to get features that I have had on my Powerbook for years.
Spend more money than I want to.
$200-$400 to upgrade to a system described by some as a service pack for XP?
The benefits are basically added security and video improvements (when the programs are written for it).
The primary drawbacks are the cost and not all my programs will operate with Vista.
Windows XP is still viable for the foreseable future and when it is not, I am preparing a Linux system antipating a break from Microsoft operating systems.
If I ever upgrade to Vista, I antipate it will be for games, unless an Playstation is a better option ![]()
PS: My primary system can currently accommodate Vista.
Why the **** would you get vista for? It's just a big pain in the but with upgrading your old computers. Windows XP installed like a charm on my 11 year old computer and they expect us to upgrade to the latest? That's bull. They think we are like money trees ready to pick them for the "season".
It's just unbelivable! I will never buy Vista....never...never..never.
If I had 3,000 bucks then I would get a new laptop with Vista and For the 1,000 bucks... I will not upgrade vista on my 11 yr old computer. It's just a waste of time.
I have followed a procession of upgrades over the years through all steps starting from msdos 3. We have 4 adequate machines at home all running XP, but the cost and hassle of hardware changes this time is too much.
The last thing that I will do with a MS product is to use it to dwnload Ubantu.

I rushed to get a new PC only a week before the Vista release. It came pre-loaded with XP, but most brands offered a free Vista upgrade. I will use XP but still have the free Vista upgrade shipped to me. I don't plan to install it simply because it's such a RAM hog, plus I have no problems using XP. Until last week I had been running 98SE, XP is actually rather "new" to me LOL...but at least I'll have the Vista discs whenever XP support gets dropped (Probably years away).
My OS is XP. I have a scanner and printer that will not function, and cannot be made to function with Vista.I have 3 programs that can be updated and will work with Vista. So if the Vista update for XP is $200, a new Scanner and Printer would be another $300-$350. So for me to update to Vista would cost me at least $500. After struggling through Win 98, I think XP is perfect. Until something MUCH better comes along, I am staying with XP.Oh yes, something else, I KNOW how to use XP.
Windows Vista :
No offense guys, but Vista is BAD BUSINESS. At least that's what everybody is saying in the tech community in San Antonio. I go to a tech college, so I am pretty familiar. Here are a few things about Vista :
- you can only install it 2x before being penalized - something like $500/installation
- programs in XP (anything you have) are TOTALLY incompatible with Vista
- keep your XP until your computer may be 20 yrs old and you need a new one - mine's 10, still have the same one (older processor)
- keep XP, but upgrade Office or Media
- Mozilla Firefox is actually faster than IE, but may not look as "pretty"
DRM BAD, NO VISTA, NOT YOURS!
Ok in all seriousness, I respect the content owners desire to protect their property, but penalizing the paying consumer is not the way. Shame on you Microsoft for bowing to this request. Take all the money you spent on DRM and reapply that to suing REAL PIRATES.
My PC is fast enough (3.7Ghz), has sufficient RAM (2Gb), a fast 3-d video card, and 250Gb HDD. It already has a DVD read/write capability It is only one year old, and is completely Vista ready. I am running XP Media Center. My router and installed software provides multiple layers of system security, backed up by good security habits.
Can anyone tell me why I would want to upgrade to an unproven OS that is costly, yet provides little more than a slicker interface and questionable improvements in security (at least for home-based versions)? My existing configuration is set up to make use of my normal tools and programs easily. What does Vista buy me, other than the headaches of converting over and resolving issues that I do not face with my existing XP???
