"Vista Ready". Sorry I have no first hand report about use on your version of Vista.

2. Zone Alarm.
While you could stick with Vista's firewall, read http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/04/zonelabs-zonealarm-vs-windows-vista.html

3. AVG AntiSpyware. Sorry, not today.

Mcafee Rocks

by sudeeptomar - 10/3/07 12:11 PM In reply to: What are you using for antivirus and firewall protection? by nycplayboy78

I gave Up Symantec 4 years ago and using mcafee since then without any problem. If i have to compare two i will buy mcafee with my eyes closed and i wont install Symantec even if I get it for free, you can imagine how much pissed off I am from Symantec. In last 4 year of mcafee use I havent had single issue with the tool itself and I cant remember if I got any virus or malware while runing mcafee.

and now to to answer to your question dana as you said that you want some american tec support just coz you hate if someone in india picks up your phone whose name is "Nick, Peter, Paul, etc"...just to your amazement these are not there real names, the reason they keep these names so that you americans can understand easily, coz you can hardly pronounce our name. I just dont understand, do we mess up your name if we can pronounce your name right why cant you....well anyways so now you know its "Nick, Peter, Paul for your ease not coz it sound cool or something...

And other point i want to raise here that tech support is outsourced to India coz we are good at it.

McAfee Rocks - Pete dosen't

by pete-sucks - 10/5/07 12:24 AM In reply to: Mcafee Rocks by sudeeptomar

sudeeptomar (Pete) Who are you kidding? Customer service starts with speaking the language of the person that you are suppose to be helping and actually helping that individual! There is nothing worse than having to call in the first place on something that is brand new and should be working. Then to get Sanyujay (Mark) who can't speak a lick of english let alone understand it! If very upsetting! You might be a very wise and smart computer tech, but when I spend $2000 on a PC from Dell or Purchase a software program from a company I expect to be able to call tech support and get my problem taken care of quickly! As it is now I spend 20 minutes just trying to get an indian employee to learn how to say my name correctly.

Example: I spent over 2 hours on the phone with Gupta (Fred) from Dell and explained to him what I wanted to do with my system, and he proceeded to tell me what I needed to do. I am no educated Tech, but I do know enough to know that a wireless router does no good if there are no components in your household that do not have a wireless receiver. Fred insisted the product he was sending me was going to work and that I needed to trust his knowledge of DELL products. Like a fool I did and for the next 9 months DELL kept charging me finance charges for an item I sent back the next day. Then they only refunded me the cost of the item and none of the finance charges!

So please before you start repremanding somebody for telling it like it is, put yourself in our shoes!

NIS 2007 Works fine for me

by rmiller1959 - 2/2/07 7:34 AM In reply to: NIS 2007 and Vista by nycplayboy78

I'm sorry your experience with Symantec tech support has been a poor one. Mine wasn't particularly good, either, but I had a happy ending.

I upgraded to Vista Home Premium and, as a ZoneAlarm IIS 7 user, waited in vain for a Vista release of that security sotware. I read that Norton Internet Security 2007 had a Vista compatible version, and I already had a 2-year license for that package, so I contacted their tech support folks and was told I would have to purchase a Vista-compatible version. Puzzled, I searched their Web site and learned that all I had to do was download the trial version of the software which was Vista-ready and, during the installation, enter my product key. I did just that, and everything worked and continues to work just fine. The add-on pack is not yet Vista-ready, but that's the only thing missing, and I presume they will make it available for free to current subscribers just as they did before.

I don't know if this is helpful, but I wish you luck in resolving your problem.

Regards,

Ron

I'm also having trouble with NIS and Vista

by antmck2007 - 2/4/07 7:34 PM In reply to: NIS 2007 Works fine for me by rmiller1959

I Just had to have Vista, so I rushed out and got it the day of release 30 Jan for us here in Australia. Big mistake. I found out that I'd have to uninstall ALL my Norton software... NIS06, NSW06 and NRS. Then a couple of days later they release an update for NIS06 - great - so I updated it then installed Vista (Home Premium 32 bit upgrade). Everything was fine except no NSW or NRS. Then about an hour or so later NIS decided to stop working??!! It needed to be activated??!! It already was. So I click the big red button FIX NOW and I get an error. I have contacted Symantec about this and actually got a reply about an hour later! After a few emails they said it was a problem with subscription synchronising. So I'm supposted to click on the subscription link and add my code there. One problem - there is no subscription link??!! It was there when NIS was working - but now it's not?? So after waiting and waiting for Symantec to get back to me. I just used a backup I made before installing Vista and restored my system back to XP. I tried re-installing Vista a couple of days later and same thing happened??!! NIS works perfectly fine for an hour or so then stops working. And I don't understand my they removed the ad blocking and anti-spam features only to offer them in an add-on, which by the way won't be out until the end of March vor Vista. What on earth is Symantec up to???

You Are Having Better Luck Than Me

by nycplayboy78 - 2/5/07 3:58 AM In reply to: I'm also having trouble with NIS and Vista by antmck2007

Hello and good morning to you in the Land Down Under. Hell I can't get NIS 2007 to even install on my Windows Vista Ultimate PC. I have emailed symantec. Here is their email address: symantecmanagers@symantec.suth.com (it works) and all I get is the same runaround about did you download the software or purchased it from retail. I am sick and tired of dealing with them. I tried to call McAfee this past weekend.....Big mistake....The wait time was ungodly. So I will call them today and ask someone there whether or not their products are compatible with Vista. I hope to hear from you soon....Mate!!!! I always wanted to say that :)

I bought it online last year - NIS06 that is.

by antmck2007 - 2/5/07 4:52 AM In reply to: You Are Having Better Luck Than Me by nycplayboy78

I bought it as a download and then I used their auto update to make it Vista "compatible". So I don't have the download package anymore. I think I might have to uninstall and re-install it - but without the download package that's going to be tad bit hard.

And I'm still waiting for them to get back to me.

Finally got a response from Symantec

Response (Jomesh Mylathuparambil) - 02/07/2007 09:42 AM
Hello Anthony,

Welcome back to Symantec Online Customer Service.

I would like to inform you that in order to resolve the issue I request you to download the trialware of Norton Internet Security 2007 and activate with the product key which you have.

To download the trialware of Norton Internet Security 2007 please follow the below given link.

http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat5/ec_MAIN.Entry17C?SID=49997&SP=10024&CID=0&PID=&PN=29&S1=&S2=&S3=&S4=&S5=&V1=31040594&V2=31040594&V3=1&V4=10&V5=&CUR=840&DSP=&PGRP=0&ABCODE=& #38;CACHE_ID=0

Following this link I find that NIS is for XP. That I'd need to have XP installed and then install the capability update, then install Vista. How is this any different to what I have already done??!! What is the difference between the trial and full version except for the activation key.

Do these people even USE Syamtec software??

Then they have the nerve to send me a survey on how good a jos there gooding. Well, they didn't get a very good report card from me.

I've dicided to stay with XP for now. I can run NIS, NSW and NSR without and probs. When my subscription ends in Ausgust I'll think about what to do then.

Disable Windows firewall before installing

by mick808 - 2/21/07 4:10 AM In reply to: Finally got a response from Symantec by antmck2007

Try this:

1) Pull network cable out so you are not connected to internet
2) Disable Windows firewall
3) Install NIS 2007
4) When it asks you to activate NIS plug cable back in.

NIS2007 Problems

by roxy2345 - 3/1/07 5:54 AM In reply to: You Are Having Better Luck Than Me by nycplayboy78

Dana
I also had problems, but with the Antivirus 2007 program. Somehow i got it to work. but not because of those guys in india that i spend over 3 hours with on the phone!!!
What pisses me off is the box said Visat compatable! NOT!!!!!

Anyway really what i'm trying to say is buyers beware and if you buy a program (any program) talk to a manager at the store, if it dont work you can return it, because most likely it'll be coming back!

You Are So Right.....

by nycplayboy78 - 3/1/07 10:50 AM In reply to: NIS2007 Problems by roxy2345

Roxy you are so right. I fell into that "Vista Ready" on the box crap with Symantec also. Then come to find out later that NIS2007 is compatible with the BETA version Vista (RC2) and not the RTM version (Release To Market). I was like ***??!! Incredible simply incredible Roxy....

I look forward to hearing from you again Roxy :)

NIS 2007 and Vista

by 747jock - 2/28/07 9:05 PM In reply to: NIS 2007 and Vista by nycplayboy78

Like you, I wasted my time on NIS2007 with the new HP 1710 Vista machine I bought today. It exited the setup program due to compatibility issues. An hour on the phone with a Comp-USA guy in India failed to resolve it, so he gave me Symantec's 1-800 number. Waited 45 min's on the line to talk to "Abdul" in Pakistan and after 30 min's he told me to uninstall everything and call him back with a priority Case ID number once I rebooted. Did like I was told and dialed back. Recording said "if you have a priority number, press 9", so I did. Got a beep, then it returned to Main Menu and I had to listen to the same crap all over again, including "press 9 if you have a priority number". Total waste of 4 hrs of my time. I'm taking it back to CompUSA and demand a refund. I installed Microsoft Care One service and it was seamless and smooth. Don't buy IS2007 until there is a valid Vista seal on the box cover! We buyers shouldn't have to be guinea pigs, nor should we have to spend hours with a phone up to our ears trying to resolve compatibility issues. CompUSA gets an "F" for talking me into buying this POS software.

I Feel Your Pain Brotha...

by nycplayboy78 - 3/1/07 4:19 AM In reply to: NIS 2007 and Vista by 747jock

I know exactly what you are going through. After being a Symantec customer for years now I am no longer a customer with them. I find it incredible that a multi-billlion dollar (USD) company cannot make adequate software. MS released the initial source code for Vista to software developers and makers so that they can update exisiting RTM (Release To Market) software or to make all new versions of software ready to go. I see why people use Macs and if this whole world wasn't in the grips of the WinTel Industrial Corporatists then I would go with an Apple machine :( Symantec has the worse customer service ever...I went with McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 and it installed flawlessly on my Vista Ultimate machine and that was before I had to go online and download the "Vista Update" from their website. Hmmm it makes you wonder ehh??!! Good luck in your future endeavors and I look forward to hearing from you in the future...

UPDATE FOR SYMANTEC PRODUCTS...

by whizkid454 - 3/1/07 1:47 PM In reply to: NIS 2007 and Vista by nycplayboy78

For those of you who are having problems with installing Internet Security or Antivirus 2007, go to the Norton homepage and in the middle of the page under the Support section there is a link that says "Vista Updates". That should solve your problems. The link is fairly new so maybe this is the answer.

Symantec download is worthless

by 747jock - 3/1/07 5:23 PM In reply to: UPDATE FOR SYMANTEC PRODUCTS... by whizkid454

As part of CompUSA's advice to me, I was told to download that same Vista update from Symantec's website. The idiot at CompUSA told me it would load a cover program that would then enable my IS2007 to install itself. He was wrong; it was actually a download of a "Vista-enabled" version of IS2007. However, once it loaded up, it came to a screen announcing "incomplete configuration", with a button labeled "Continue" to complete the configuration. What happened then? You can probably guess it: not a darned thing! Clicking on Continue caused some minor disk activity but the screen never went away and the installation remained incomplete. Now, this was on Vista Home Premium, pre-loaded in my brand-new HP Pavilion PC, so it's not like I was trying to put it onto one of my home-built PCs with a non-standard configuration. Bottom line: no buyer should have to go through these hassles to get IS2007 to work. If Symantec had its "sierra" together, they'd have fully Vista-enabled and debugged software in all the stores by now. The fact they are resorting to such draconian methods to make the software viable this late in the game, and their abysmal Tech Support service out of East Asia, is totally inexcusable. BTW, I took my copy of IS2007 directly to the manager at my local CompUSA, explained about the 4 hrs of personal time and trouble I'd gone through trying to make it work, and he cheerfully gave me a refund. Next time the Symantec rep shows up at his store, I hope he shoves all those bogus CDs where the sun don't shine!
