I have Comcast Cable. Am I correct in thinking I will not need the HD box if I buy a HDTV with a QAM tuner? I am interested in a 26 inch set and I can only seem to find this feature on a Sony set. Panasonic does not state in their specs on their website that this feature was offered. When I called Panasonic today, two different reps said they had never heard of QAM. I was shocked. Anyway, I am interested in Sony, Panasonic, or Samsung. I know the Samsung only offers the ATSC tuner. Do you think it would be quite beneficial to get the QAM feature? If I don't get the feature, will that mean years of paying Comcast more money?
You are dreaming, hehe. lets face it..they got us. We want it then we must pay with or without QAM or whatever. The only thing we gain might be just convience.
Also Comcast sucks. Go with Dish Network or Direct t.v. hi-def system. The Dish Network system has a built in over the air tuner So throw up an outside antenna do a digital scan and all your local digital hi-def stations will go into the main Menue You will also find the fees for DIsh Network are a lot cheaper and has many more bells and whistles. Or if you dont want to throw up an outside antenna you can get all your network station over the Dish system. In closing I tried Comcast for a week and found picture quality horrible especially s.d. channels You can order the hi-def package and VOOM for only $15.00 extra per month and With a cheap antenna I receive 18 digital channels 8 are in hi-def thru the dish system good luck stewee
I appreciate your help, however, my question is not about a certain cable company. My question is about tuners. I do care about the two features. I just wanted someone to respond with information in regard to the tuners. Thanks!
there are just too much informations to digest. ATSC create the standard and QAM is part of the technical specifications.
IS AN "ATSC" tuner nowadays; with federal mandates already in place (FCC.)
For more on "QAM" just google it; plenty of info available.
My SONY has both, but I think that's because it was released during the transition to total ATSC standards. (that's what I was told; how true, might be another story.)
Best wishes, river.
I appreciate your help.
It has been my experience that QAM Tuners CAN in fact pull a limited number of HD stations over regular cable. If you connect your simple coax cable from the wall to the tv and your cable company offers HD channels, you will find a limited selection as well as possibly CINEMAX. That has been how it works with charter communications anyway. So yes, if you want to find a TV that may be able to pull HD with out a box, QAM will work in some instances
Well I spoke to Panasonic and they said the QAM tuner will only pull in channels 1-135. If HDn channels are greater than this you need a cable box. I believe all cable HD channels are greater than 135. They Got Ya again!
The Panasonic I am thinking about buying is the TH50PZ85U which has Viera Link (not Viera Cast). As far as I can tell Viera is useless since the majority of the time you will be using the remote that comes with the cable box. Since the cable box remote is also universal you just put the panasonic remote in the drawer.
By the way the cable box rent (Time Warner) is 7.62 per month and the remote is .31 per month plus (i assume) the large tax structure is also applied.
Any Samsung owners out there (I'm getting an LN46A750 myself) that own the model that I'm getting that can tell me how QAM tuning and reception is on this? I'm looking forward to hooking not only a cable box, but a direct cable connection as well, and wanting to know if QAM tuning is good or bad on this. It's like ever since Samsung went from two cable connections down to a combo tuner, it makes me wonder how well things will be with this...
MR. SAMSUNG WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTION FREE OF CHARGE!!!
River.
I have an HD set, with an HD box in my living room. I have a regular set, with a regular box in the bedroom.
I want to add a new HDTV in the basement, and the one I am looking at has a QAM tuner.
Will I need to get the HD box, or just a simple cable box to get the HD channels?
(I have HBO and MAX, will I get those with just a regular cable box and a QAM tuner?
