Vista - not for current systems

by Anthillacres - 1/31/07 9:03 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

After running RC1 for two months on two systems I returned to XP. Vista in all of its glory ran well on both systems, but both tended they to over heat because the processors were active all the time. I also found older hardware forces the use of work-arounds or retirement of the hardware. The printer/scanner (Canon MP760) had limited functionality, and the Magellan GPS software wouldn't run.

Vista No

by rgssss - 1/31/07 9:10 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

My firm has 12 machines, and we have our security set on high.
Anti-virus and firewall keeps us clean as well as an e-mail policy.

Microsoft has not helped as they should have in the past though security has been a big issue in the past. Now we are to pay $200
to acquire the security we should already have been provided.

Not Me.

Why Upgrade?

by brf50b - 1/31/07 9:11 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I'm presently quite happy with XP: with a router, software firewall, a-v software and anti-malware/spyware software, I keep my wife's computer up to date and quite secure. All the programs we want, the hardware we use work well. To upgrade this machine to Vista Ultimate (the only one which would make sense to me) requires a better video card - the upgrade to to Vista would cost $300 to $450 (Ultimate). I think I'll wait until I get a new computer - at least a year from now, I want to see how Vista makes out.
Oh yes, on my computer (an overclocked PIII running at about 900 Mhz) I use Ubuntu 90% of the time. (Occasionally I boot into XP - yes, I dual boot - usually for my grandson to play games). I prefer it. I don't care about the eye-candy, I want something that will run better - Ubuntu. Microsoft will have a tough time selling me a new operating system on MY primary machine - of course, MY machine won't run Vista anyway.
I just can't see Vista as worth the hassle or the cost. I regularily image both my machines, so a recovery takes about 15 min. Hmm, will Vista Ultimate, with the features I see as useful, do that?

why do people continue to support Microsoft global empire

by stuwin - 1/31/07 10:30 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I currently have WindowsXP
but have started to learn about LINUX
Being a European - i discovered we will be paying more for Windows VISTA than the americans !?!
I have read a few computer magazine over the years and have learnt that Microsoft seem to postively thrive on not so perfect operating system ! with all the virus ,hackers , spyware and more.. i never feel 100% safe surfing the internet -knowing Microsoft products hav mushroom in size ..to swallow up .. all the space on my computer, then the PC suppliers turn round to say you need a new PC !

LINUX is gathering more more fans
is so much more stable - u can install it free , much of their software is compatable to Windows.

in my house hold we have 3 computers - under Microsoft- if i was to buy VISTA i would have to buy THREE seperate licences !
come on BILL GATES - rationale "?! $$$$$

When will you install Vista??

by wheelzup - 1/31/07 10:54 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Just like Windows XP had it's problems when it was first released Vista will more then likely go through the same growing pains. I'll will admit to having a system that is running XP at the moment but when I built it I did so knowing that when Vista has been out several month's and the software I'll be using most often will run on Vista without any major pains I'll switch.

No chance at current prices!

by rjharlan - 1/31/07 10:54 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I just can't see myself spending 200 dollars to upgrade my system when all I really get out of the deal is a flashy new home screen. They haven't included anything that I don't already have on my system and it appears that the OS will be a bigger hog than it is already. I will, however, be upgrading Office. There is where MS should be focusing their advertising dollars. If you haven't seen the new Office you are missing a real gem. All of the programs were upgraded to be more intuitive and the interface is vastly superior to anything on the market. New OS (No Way) New Office (Oh Yeah)!

I got Windows Vista ultimate and it actualy runs very well for me. I haven't had a chance to install all my programs yet thou but so far its fast and works fine. Looks good too, People who keep complaing about the price should look at the OEM version, $200 for Ultimate, at that price who would pay the $399?

Vista is not for this guy!!!

by webjunky2 - 1/31/07 11:54 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

From what I have already read on Windows Vista I have been turned off big time. I agree whole heartedly that Microsoft is back to their old (or not so old) tricks again. Releasing a new operating system so they can stop supporting Windows XP in a few years which, like usual, leaves everyone in a position where they have no choice but to upgrade or buy a full version because Billy Boy decides he needs more money than the billions he already has. Mark my words when I say that if you want to keep everything you have somewhat safe and secure on your business or home computer you will be forced to upgrade in a few years because Microsoft will stop issuing security releases and patches for their XP OS. At that point in time the choice you have been able to make to not buy Vista (aka $200.00 XP Security Patch Upgrade) will no longer be a choice but a necessity. Everyone must realize by now how Microsoft does business by forcing their products on people whether they want them or not. Microsoft has not become the giant in the computer and software industry by chance. It is all very well calculated and orchestrated with only one prize in mind...MONEY!

Not for me!

by TNeedy - 1/31/07 12:01 PM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I saw the video of Vista and didn't see much difference between it and XP. After 5 years in the making, I'm very disappointed. TN

Jaded

by rishidan - 1/31/07 12:22 PM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Remember when XP can out and everyone upgraded and then had to wade through weeks (or months in some cases) of patches from 3rd parties AND MS before their systems would work w/o freezing / crashing / disabling features etc.? I do and that's precisely why I've chosen to sit on the sidelines for this release.

Don't get me wrong, I encourage all for "bleeding edgers" to upgrade to Vista ASAP. Seriously. I mean, now I don't have to pay people to spend hours on the phone or dredging through tech support forums working out the myriad of bugs that come with any OS because this group has literally PAID Microsoft to do this for me.

It just doesn't get any better, let alone easier, than that.

VISTA = $$$ + HEADACHES

by szoruba - 1/31/07 12:54 PM In reply to: Jaded by rishidan

The strong stench of MS corporate greed is evident with the pricing scheme for Vista.

They purposely pulled out features such as Remote Desktop that existed in Windows XP Home from Vista Home Basic and Home Premium. Now they require you to purchase Vista Ultimate or Business to get Remote Desktop back...and pay a hefty premium like never before for the OS. Do they think their customers are foolish? Albeit, some of us apparently are.

I am specially intrugued by Vista Home Basic OEM users who tout that they did not pay too much for their OS. Do they really know that they paid to take a step back from the reliability, security and networking features of Windows XP Home?

I think the MS Empire has already peaked and is starting to decay. Another ancient Rome. They are really opening the gates of the city to that little barbarian named Linus and his friends.

Not a Chance

by hitbit - 1/31/07 12:32 PM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I will not be purchasing Vista. Why ?. I am using XP Media Centre which works fine as long as it is supported by my various security programmes. I have already paid MS for an operating system which by their own admission is woefully lacking in the security department. Now having paid them for a programme which they assured me would solve all the problems of previous systems they expect me to bear the cost of correcting their mistakes yet again. If I were gullible enough to pay the ridiculous sums they have the cheek to demand it would only serve to reassure them I would be willing to fork out endless amounts of money to rectify their errors. This would suggest to MS that they can continue to thrump up any old rubbish in new clothing, claim it is infallible, get me to pay for it, then smugly tell me its rubbish and expect me to pay up yet again and again and again. I believe MS should give me this programme for free along with an apology for selling me their XP turnip. Anyone thinking of "upgrading " to Vista yet another " programme to end all problems " should wait until they are changing their PCs and benefit from the much cheaper price MS will offer to manufacturers.

Wait a couple months

by ranron - 1/31/07 12:38 PM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Since Windows 95, I've been buying the new Windows first day, preorder, or gotten it ahead of time.

For this time, I've decided to wait a few months, while the bugs are ironned out and such. I might wait until I get a new computer. Having been a faithful Windows user since birth, I'm also considering getting a Macbook Pro, so I might migrate away from the chaos of the Vista OS and all its hype.

Who knows, this is the first time that I believe that getting stuff first isn't good.

Installing Windows Vista

by Dalesgal08 - 1/31/07 12:53 PM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Thats a big NO!!!!!!!!
Received an email about a week ago from my Internet Service telling me if we put that on our computer it would interfere with out outgoing mail and they would not be able to supply us with internet service any longer. So, I am happy with my cheap intenet service ($9.95 monthly) and I am staying with them. And Windows Vista doesn't sound all that enticing to me right now anyway!!!!!!!!!!
