Compact Flash gets my vote. I would actually go a far as to say I would not buy a camera which used a different format. You can get CF everywhere, the PCMCIA adaptors for them cost pennies, they are nice to handle, very robust - no contest IMO!
I use CompactFlash, SmartMedia and SD cards because those are what my three cameras take! The one I use the most is the SD but that is because that is the smallest camera - a Minolta - that fits in my pocket, is flat without any protruding lenses and shoots excellent pictures.
I use Compact Flashes because of the larger capacity offered and the "extreme" flavors with excellent read/write speeds that I need for my DSLR, especially in burst modes. Of course my camera only has CF, but even for my point-and-shoots, I use the CFs for their proven quality.
Out of all things, I'd say I enjoy the extra bulk of the CF cards compared to to SDs that I use. The extra bulk makes them easier to find and essentially harder to misplace.
Works in all of our digital cameras and our movie camera. Works in my iPaq and mp3 player. Available almost everywhere in almost every capacity from many different manufacturers. Prices are cheap and seem to be getting cheaper. Small size and easy to use.
Why? Well it was the format of my 2nd digital camera and when I went shpping for a Video/still combo unit, that was the available format.
My first digital was a Sony with a Memory stick (Ver 1). I don't use that camera much now since the stick capacity is limited to 128Mb. The SD cards are much larger capacity for better images.
BTW, I have not had any memory card fail.
Even though my Canon digital camera uses Compact Flash I prefer to use SD because I can use it on more devices like my GPS cell phone and even the Nintendo Wii. The large number of devices that use SD definetly outnumber any other type of media especially MS and Xd. Still I like to use a different format for my digital camera than to my other devices that way I just use CF for my photos and SD for everything else.
I use an older Toshiba digital camera: PDR-M60 ![]()
This is a lovely 2.3 mp camera that still takes stunning photos
And Its images are small enough to fullscreen on my website.
Of course, if this camera dies on me, i am stuck with a few cards that are not useable in any modern cameras. ![]()
I use the Memory sticks(in various capacities, brands, form factors) because I have had all Sony cameras. My laptop, card readers and back ups all take them. Mine is a legacy inheritance because the sticks have all worked thru the various cameras and as I update cameras I rotate the capacity.(going from 16 mb to 2 gigs now) Never had a problem with any of them and I run about 8-12 at any one time. 75K pics and have lost less than a dozen due to operator error, not the sticks. I have used them for data at various times too, no problem.
I have a Canon camera that uses an SD card, so that is what i voted for. But truth be told, i don't have a "preferred" type of memory card. My phone takes microSD, but i have no use for a memory card in my phone, because i use it exclusively as a phone.
Currently on the market for a larger card though; i have a 256 in right now, but i'll be going to Southeast Asia to study next semester, so i've been looking at 2 Gig cards @ around 100X speed..
i have been using a compact flash card for almost three years and have never had a moments problem with it. i have an older camera that takes smart media and have never had a problem with those either. my olympus c-8080 is the perfect camera for me and takes compact flash and xd cards. i bought a 1gb xd card and twice i have had problems and lost my photos. i do not recommend them to anyone.
I began to use an SD card because my Pentax digital SLR requires it. The card is small and dependable. Another benefit for us, is that it also fits my daughter's Canon camera allowing us to switch cards.
Hi
SD is compatible with Nikon cameras, so I didn't have a choice, so SD is preferred, but it feels flimsy, and the data contacts are exposed. I think compactflash is faster and sturdier. Before, I think size mattered because you could carry more cards, but the GB capacity of these things is getting bigger and cheaper, so the casual photographer only needs one card at a time.
xD cards are almost too small, a bit like manipulating a small pea, but clever nonetheless.
Have three CF cards and three SD card. CF is so much more sturdy than any of the others. I travel throughout the middle east and the former Soviet Union and durability is very important. The SD cards are used in my PDA and rarely removed. The CF cards are in my Canon cameras and are often removed and replaced. I feel so much more confident with them.
My camera is a Sony so I don't have any choice. I naturally prefer the media (the only media) which will work in my camera. I advise people to purchase cameras which use SD Memory because they are so plentiful and in expensive. Also there are lots of laptops, printers, and desktop computers which have SD card readers built in.
I paid $70.00 for a 256 Meg Memory Stick Pro for my camera, and then I bought a 2 Gig SD card for $13.99 for my daughters camera
Do the math that works out to a 40:1 price ratio
